“Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.” ― Frédéric Chopin
In my opinion, there is nothing delicate about her touch in the intimate pieces of Chopin. I am a big Martha fan in respect to what she performs well and Chopin is not always one of those areas. Her playing of the 4th ballade is rushed and bombastic. I don't like it. Her approach to the 2nd movement of the e minor concerto, however, is delicate and poetic. The 4th ballade is not.

@@rigel48 I would agree that it is epic but there are many intimate moments ... it is truly at the top of what one calls the greater Chopin... a true masterpiece.
And.. of course.. it’s just perfect. My heart wants to explode. I often think that the third ballade is performed a bit to soft but no, not when played by her. The amount of emotion she’s able to put into her playing is just incredible
All points of view are welcome here. I post these recordings to bring joy to the listeners and I understand that some of you may prefer some other interpretation. I just want to clarify one thing: - Chopin was fragile and feeble. His music was not.
She's a tiger roaring into her climaxes, when minutes befoe she was purring at your ear like a new born kitten.. Her emotional scope within each work is huge, her interpretative skills fully cope with what Chopin wrote. Thank you so much, Max. Heaven on Earth to start my morning ❤️❤️❤️🇦🇷💙🇦🇷
Rachmaninov allegedly said that he wrote the d minor concerto for elephants and MA has certainly that approach to the concerto and works of the Russian school. I am not so certain that Chopin wrote his music with tigers in mind and therein the problem with her overly muscular approach to these intimate masterpieces. She is great at what she does well but, IN MY OPINION, I do not think that the more intimate Chopin is her forte. I would suggest or point out Pior Anderszewkit's rendition of the F minor ballade as a reference. It is not rushed and sublimely poetic. Technique and speeding never overcome the poetry. I do believe that Chopin allegedly said that "an aristocrat never hurries!" ruclips.net/video/DqeXhIzEjVM/видео.html
TJFNYC212 : Piotr Anderszewski is a very interesting pianist, but in the 4th ballade I find that he does a little too much in the search for delicate nuances. At the end it lacks momentum and it becomes mannered.
Très belle interprétation, qui me parle, rien n'est parfait en effet mais le bonheur musical en tout cas ne se trouve pas dans la perfection! Merci à l'artiste.
So different from the ballades I've been hearing in the preliminary round of Chopin Piano Competition these past few days. Not a single contestant came close to what I just heard

She's obviously among the world's finest pianists alive or dead, there's no doubt at all about that... and there are many points in these ballades and her other interpretations where she does something unique and surprising, like she's extracting some dynamic from certain passages that I'd never noticed before, but that was really there embedded in the music all along. That said, the tremendous scope of her dynamics can be a little... jarring isn't the right word. I don't know, oftentimes her playing just has this liquidity, and I feel like I can't keep hold of it - it's always changing shape and falling into the gaps in my understanding. It can actually become quite frustrating! Come to think of it, many women have this effect on me...
She is a fine pianist, but I have always wished she would slow down. It sounds like she is playing fast, and rushing her way through the music. (She sounds like this in many of the pieces she plays.) She has some wonderful voicing in many spots, but you almost miss it because she's playing at the speed of light. But what do I know, right. Interestingly enough, she recently performed the Tchaikovsky piano concerto and it was glorious.
@@TJFNYC212 I agree. This is all far too fast. I am glad that now in her older years she doesn't play as fast. But it's a shame she no longer does piano solos. These are actually her best years but her least playing.
@@republiccooper It is indeed a shame that she no longer likes to give recitals. That being said, I have heard her several times in concerto here in LA... but the best part of all these programs have always been the unexpected solo encores that she treats us to after the concerto. Recently I heard in the Ravel G major in which she shines... she owns it... yet the greatest and most moving part of the evening was the 1st, 3rd and last numbers of Schumann's Kinderszenen Op. 15
Martha’s playing makes the life of this old girl worth living!

Such delicacy and touch. The one and only Martha Argerich, my favorite.

As so many other pianists, she had no clue how to play Chopin.
