So often on You Tube guitar tutorials the presenters get the talking bit wrong, pointing out very s-l-o-w-l-y what we can already see them doing. This is so refreshing: an excellent introduction for the intermediate or advanced player The commentary and the playing are equally informative, equally eloquent. And he's a dude. Great job.
dont think ive ever seen a more relaxed non ego guy showing amazing technique.or of course he may be drunk.either way im very impressed.great guy amazing style.it inspired me to pick up my old axe again and retune to dadgad, and promptly put it away again.i didnt strum it ! many thanks for posting.hope to see you live.
ya know the more i watch this ,,,the more this guy is amazing...and im learning celtic lick stuff from my old rocker stuff nice change thankyou so much brother ,,
Thanks for the helpful hints. When I first heard Davey Graham playing the traditional Irish tune - 'She moved through the Fair' - which was the first tune/song ever recorded in dadgad - I knew I had to learn this tuning which he introduced to the music World. It's a pity that other musicians who later borrowed this tuning - got all the kudos whilst Davey himself was more or less forgotten. Your lesson here is of great help and appreciate your uploading. 'Cheers'.
Hi Phil - I'm a lifelong fan of Phil Keaggy and a new fan and student of yours. What got my immediate attention in this amazing video was your approach to concept - natural. I'm self taught and haven't begun to read music yet (outside of chords and what-not). Everything made perfect sense to me. Thanks much for the enlightenment.
having both Irish, and Spanish roots ; must be directing me towards DADGAD, Celtic music. And with a 12 string available, I'm ready to explore. Thanks, brother!
This video continues to inspire me to play in dadgad. I have a friend that stays in standard tuning and every time I pass my guitar to her, she gets frustrated and wants standard tuning. Hopefully I’ll get her to enjoy dadgad as much as I do.
Thank yuo ! A place to start and go from there explained very well. That is what someone needs to get in to something. Thanks for the thinking and mindset to get started. DADGAD has made me fall in love with playing guitar again. I haven't played in years. Now I want to again. I found my soul again.
The most beautiful sound ever. I could listen to this all day. Very much have become addicted to DADGAD tuning and this has just rooked me in even more! Ty.
Came in here from a "Kashmir" tutorial. Was a pleasure to listen to your "flight around the chimney" (if I may call it so). I love celtic sounds. You got it man to bring up this mood. Great inspiration! And you made me smile at 3:12. I think it would be fun to have a beer with you. Or two per haps... ;-) And at least - I like your voice. You could be a narrator or a voice actor or a speaker for an audio book. Or a singer!!! Are you to hear as a singer somewhere in the web? I'm sure you're a wonderful singer. Cheers from Berlin! PS: Found you singing...Just like I said...
Love this tuning ... But also ... so very impressed by your playing ... Awesome ! I like the "Don't strum ... !" Only strumming on cittern to """"play""" Kashmir on cittern cos' I couldn't resist :)
Wish i could 'mess around' like that, and it also made me laugh/chuckle, and- you are not allowed a break while We (or some of us) hang on yer every word an sound ! Thanks again Phil, another lovely vid .. also at my 'umble' limitations status- the simpler advice the better, and it sounds beautiful anyway. What more do i want?
This is the guitar video I've been looking for, but didn't know it existed. Just got into it a couple days ago, and the guitar will show you. DADGAD is me, why has it taken me 50 years to find out, but I found out. I've always had this weird style, and went through a very pleasurable period of learning in open D/slide, and this feels like a melding of standard of standard and open tuning. I don't know that I'l ever tune my guitar back, or maybe not for a long time...
I suffered a rotator-cuff tear in my left shoulder 7 years ago, and could no longer play standard-tuned. I came across this video, and found that I could manage dadgad without a wracking pain throughout my arm. I'd almost given up. Phil, you're amazing, and hell, no I don't strum! [I love your recent posts from the crapper, too]
I love this tuning. And this is a great demonstration. What this clip teaches me, and thank you for this, is that if you get your thumb working those bottom strings, you can noodle away with the higher strings and it will sound amazing. Many thanks.
Excellent play, Phil! Started to mess around with DADGAD myself, Celtic sound is really charming. I'll try to "spice" all songs I play in standard tuning with DADGAD suspended chords.
Stumbled on your video...love your stuff...started messing with DADGAD two months ago and was so encouraged with your style of presentation...like I was sitting there with you...thanks. ALIASX
Weird. I had my acoustic in my hands, just tuned from D to DADGAD, and found the scale mentioned here, and then no sooner than I strummed a chord the Mr. Hare says "Don't strum it!" That aside, a nice intro to the concept of getting the most out of DADGAD. Informative vid. Thanks for posting it.
lol Phil...from one old stoner to another...i'm loving your music...great to hear dadgad used to such a high level...6 out of 5 stars...thanks for sharing.
For sure Jon. I just feel that DADGAD takes on a greater resonance when played fingerstyle. That being said, the video is just the ruminations of an old stoner!
One of the prettiest demos of dadgad I’ve seen. I have to slow this down and see if I can learn even a little of it. I like the advice - Don’t strum it. Then a smoke break.
Love the way you play, but as someone else pointed out, don't sell DADGAD short with the "don't strum." I'm not much of a finger picker but I love the tuning as a rhythm guitar, both as a solo and in an electric band It has such great full chords, with all the suspensions effortlessly creeping in. And it's a great lead instrument even with a pick.
Hiya. I listen to virtually everything and try to leave no stone unturned. My main aim is to promote acoustic music, free of artifice and electronic trickery. I suppose my favourite artists are Steely Dan (Acoustic? LOL), John Martyn, Richard Thompson, Joni Mitchell, Leon Rosselson etc and, if pushed, I probably listen to more jazz than anything else.
Great stuff mate! The reason I said 'don't strum it' really was to try and encourage people to use the open-strings to gain greater sonic 'output' from the voicings. Fingerstyle playing is better for this, whereas 'block-strumming' (not what you were doing per se) tends to mask this option. Also, I'd had about 6 glasses of wine when I did that vid!
Will do Jesse. I've used that before - big fat drone tuning! Have you tried DADEAD, DAADAD, DGDGAD, CGDGAD, DADEAE, you probably have, it just goes on ha ha!
What a lovely sound from that guitar ! I've been on DADGAD tuning for a couple of months now,- I find I cannot leave it now-it's so addictive, especially on my 12- string guitars
@philhare i was refering to the magical marlboro, i think kurtcobain smoked marlboro light 100's during the recording of unplugged in new york... you a great inspiration for me, i love all your guitar videosQ!!!
Great vision here . I have mostly thought in dorian mode having come to DADGAD from G sus 4 on clawhammer banjo the tuning historicaly known as sawmill tuning . Very helpful thinking on your clip .I have tried Mr Beverages Maggot in DGDGCD because it in G but it is wonderful in D if you want to give it a try in DADGAD . Very nice to meet you here . All the best , Guy
Some interesting comments and nice playing - the only I don't agree with is when Phil says 'don't strum it' - personally I think it sounds fine when this tuning is strummed - listen to some old recordings of Richard Thompson or Dick Gaughin - they certainly got some nice sounds strumming DADGAD (as well as finger picking of course!)
Hi Martina, It's a Tony Revell 'Catfish Keith' parlour guitar which is now owned by my daughter. Check out the other videos to see what I play now. All the best x
Hi Andy, In my opinion, the best tuning for slide blues is open G: DGDGBD. Conversely, any chordal tuning will work well eg. DADFsharpAD, CGCGCE, EACsharpEAE etc. all the best mate.
I love your style. I call this the cow boy tuning. I still do not know how to use my left hand properly and can not find anyone to teach me. It is very slow going! I am 61 yrs old and just started on my own about 6 months ago. Best Wishes
Hiya. Simply think that you have four frets to four fingers. When you run out of space, if you like, then move to that next position of four fingers, four frets. It won't always be like that, but it's a good thing to bear in mind. All the best. Phil
@philhare when i play in altered tunings i often tie a small piece of string around the guitar strings so that the notes i play ring more openly than the open stings adding to the depth while strumming.
well, thanks for watching. i saw your vid a few years back when i was first looking at dadgad. i am not looking at dadgad again after a spell in open D and good old fashioned concert tuning. I should have more vids on the way so please subscribe.
Haha, I like you. You definitely are bad. I was looking for someone to teach me Travis picking. I'm in dadgad so that's how I found you. Anyway thanks I enjoyed.
agreed and greetings from arkansas! i myself tend to prefer a variant of this tuning that, pre-dates the guitar back to the 14th century first said to be played on the ketari. DADDAD. you lose alot because the two middle strings are tuned the same, but it does make a certain "fullness" to certain harmonys, and although i do agree about picking instead of strumming, in this particular tuning i think there are certain "middle grounds". ill post a video, check it out. masterful playing by the way..
So often on You Tube guitar tutorials the presenters get the talking bit wrong, pointing out very s-l-o-w-l-y what we can already see them doing. I just saw/heard this for the first time....And I am blown away. I just sat here with my mouth open, and a dumb look on my face..Thank you, very much!
dont think ive ever seen a more relaxed non ego guy showing amazing technique.or of course he may be drunk.either way im very impressed.great guy amazing style.it inspired me to pick up my old axe again and retune to dadgad, and promptly put it away again.i didnt strum it ! many thanks for posting.hope to see you live.
Your the kind of being that should be there, all the time, thanks for the gifts.
Beautiful sounds. You are a very talented musician and teacher. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thanks Henry. All the best.
Thanks Henry.

No worries. Have a good adventure with DADGAD!

Just explain to her that lots of ladies enjoy DADGAD, there's nothing to be ashamed of.
Keep coming back to this video, it's such a gem.
Thanks Phil. I learned more in 5 minutes here than in 2 hours of lessons. Beautiful sound!
Thanks Jack. All the best.
Thank yuo !
A place to start and go from there explained very well.

DADGAD has made me fall in love with playing guitar again. I haven't played in years. Now I want to again. I found my soul again.
Cheers and best of luck. P
Much like Bert Jansch or the founder of the tuning Davie Graham, Excellent stuff mate, really sweet sounding guitar you have
RIP, Phil. 😢
The most beautiful sound ever. I could listen to this all day. Very much have become addicted to DADGAD tuning and this has just rooked me in even more! Ty.
Kool! Cool! Keeping it Sharp and Ringing with Passion! Thank you
Wow, thanks mate. You have played a long time. Inspiring

Really enjoyed that
Thanks uploader 🍻
2:55 a profound moment... :)
It just looked so cool when he said that, then smoking, but yeah, it can be beautiful sometimes when you strum, but lightly.
Love this tuning ... But also ... so very impressed by your playing ... Awesome !
I like the "Don't strum ... !" Only strumming on cittern to """"play""" Kashmir on cittern cos' I couldn't resist :)
Thank you!
Excellent and simple explanation for familiarizing oneself with the tuning.

Thanks Ben. Yeah tunings can be therapeutic! Keep well.
@@philhare / thank you in turn, and keep the home fires burning...
I love this tuning. And this is a great demonstration.

thanks phil, just started playing in DADGAD and watched your vidio , inspired me mate thanks
Great video! Cool presenting skills. Cheers.!
Excellent play, Phil! Started to mess around with DADGAD myself, Celtic sound is really charming. I'll try to "spice" all songs I play in standard tuning with DADGAD suspended chords.
Saw this video on a guitar forum. It has convinced me to immediately have a go at the tuning. Great great playing and inventiveness. Really inspiring!
Stumbled on your video...love your stuff...started messing with DADGAD two months ago and was so encouraged with your style of presentation...like I was sitting there with you...thanks. ALIASX
Great this Phil....I must pay you a visit next time I'm down in Cambs. Chris
My god! His voice is like smoke, whiskey and long nights of debauchery. Now on to the playing...
Thanks for posting it.

absolutely mind blowing ,,,nice rolls and ya trully are awsome on that ,,!!
Hi Phil - glad to meet another Revell guitar owner - good stuff. Jonny
For sure Jon. I just feel that DADGAD takes on a greater resonance when played fingerstyle. That being said, the video is just the ruminations of an old stoner!
Beautiful, mate. I hear Fairport is looking for another picker...
One of the prettiest demos of dadgad I’ve seen. I have to slow this down and see if I can learn even a little of it. I like the advice - Don’t strum it. Then a smoke break.
Beautiful sound there Phil. Stoned, glass of wine of 9. Ciggy or 5, what better way to spend some time! ;)
Nice playing and a very smart guitar you have there.
Very nice, some really great playing, ;-)
Yes, DADGAD is very versatile, from Blues to Celtic and other,
Great guitar player, cool video thanks!
Best DADGAD tutorial out there. Thanks much!
You are welcome here in Bagdad, Kentucky.
Love the way you play, but as someone else pointed out, don't sell DADGAD short with the "don't strum." Great playing from A accomplished musician.
very pleasing to the ear especially @ 2:30
great concept of playing with at tunig thank you !
god your voice is just so deep and soothing. Loved listening to it as much as your wonderful playing!
Hiya. I listen to virtually everything and try to leave no stone unturned. My main aim is to promote acoustic music, free of artifice and electronic trickery. Can't get enough DADGAD! Lovely playing and a great vid!

phil hare you can strum and fingerpick within the same tune - pat metheny strumming and el mcmeen
I just realized listening to you play, Ritchie Blackmore must have done Possums Last Dance in DADGAD( tuned down a half step)- it sounds so similar!😊❤
I was so p***ed off because I thought I'd lost this vid. So glad I found it again. It was what first made me tinker with DADGAD.
That voice tho
Sure wish you were around Sacramento, Ca. Keep playing this over and over......
Will do Jesse. I've used that before - big fat drone tuning! Have you tried DADEAD, DAADAD, DGDGAD, CGDGAD, DADEAE, you probably have, it just goes on ha ha!
I'm not afraid of saying that you have a deep and inspiring voice. Glad I suscribed your chanel some time ago.
What a lovely sound from that guitar ! I've been on DADGAD tuning for a couple of months now,- I find I cannot leave it now-it's so addictive, especially on my 12- string guitars
Boy does this guitar ring !
Excellent ,saw you at the wirral guitar festival years ago, supporting Woody mann..
Would be awesome to listen to you solid for a while, doe have any other vids mate?
@philhare
i was refering to the magical marlboro, i think kurtcobain smoked marlboro light 100's during the recording of unplugged in new york...
you a great inspiration for me, i love all your guitar videosQ!!!
Very nice demo. THX
Very inspirational. A different tuning is an effective cure for writer's block.
3:40 - sweet stuff.. love when we get to that "what's this, I wonder" :)
Once you go DADGAD, you never go back :O)
that guitar sounds amazing.. i can almost sense the top vibrating though the creen.
Hi there,
It's a Tony Revell 'Catfish Keith' parlour guitar, a lovely instrument which I sadly no longer own!
I have a Tony Revell Parlour Guitar ( as seen in the Sept 1992 Guitarist Magazine) Beautiful instrument.
Well done. Thank you.
Beautiful. Thank you!
Cheers mate. All the best. Strum, strum..........
Thank you sir! All the best.
Hi agin Phil ,,,,still blown away at this vid ...can u make another How to on DADGAD,, you just a certain majic man ...peace ...Rob

So inspiring
i ll tune my piano like this to see what's gonna happen
Bad idea!!...
Astounding player..great teacher. You remind me of Martin Simpson
Jimmy Page strummed in DADGAD and Kashmir happened
Ashim Shrestha actually he found the riff off another piece called swan song, he reversed it and the legendary Kashmir was born.
Hi Martina,
It's a Tony Revell 'Catfish Keith' parlour guitar which is now owned by my daughter. Check out the other videos to see what I play now. All the best x
Anyone have an idea what the tune is around 3:50? I recognise some of the others so thought this may be identifiable too. What a line!
Hi Andy,
In my opinion, the best tuning for slide blues is open G: DGDGBD. Conversely, any chordal tuning will work well eg. DADFsharpAD, CGCGCE, EACsharpEAE etc. all the best mate.

Loved it, thank you.
Sweet guitar, Phil. Who's the maker?
You're an amazing DADGAD player. U have my total respect.
Thanks for this! I won't strum...I promise. :)
Peace to you and yours.
nice.......can't wait to get home and retune my resonator Phil !
@philhare
when i play in altered tunings i often tie a small piece of string around the guitar strings so that the notes i play ring more openly than the open stings adding to the depth while strumming.
wow thank you man ,,peace ...
Didn’t Micheál Ó Domhnaill started it from Bertch Ian or John Redburn?
Or did Daithaí Sproule play it before?
My favourite tuning 😊
well, thanks for watching. i saw your vid a few years back when i was first looking at dadgad. i am not looking at dadgad again after a spell in open D and good old fashioned concert tuning. I should have more vids on the way so please subscribe.

Live this guy! Cut offs? 😆😉😅and a cigarette! Yeah, and damn good guitar. But who made that amazing Parlor Dreadnaught!?
"parlor dreadnought" is an oxymoron.
agreed and greetings from arkansas! i myself tend to prefer a variant of this tuning that, pre-dates the guitar back to the 14th century first said to be played on the ketari.
