When Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Clashed

  • Today we crack open a time capsule and go over what has become one of my favorite interviews relating to Fire Emblem. a 90s era FE interview will of course be headlined by Shouzou Kaga, Fire Emblem's creator. But beside him for this sit down was none other than Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy. But in my opinion, to really appreciate what this interview meant at the time, context for Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, and 1994 is required.

      If there was ever a perfect game with top of the line story telling and lack of loose ends in my eyes, it would have to be FFVI. I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I resonated with the characters, etc, it was such a rollercoaster of a good time. Even upon a replay, I find myself having the same love for it (if not higher because replaying let's you see the set up of story plots). It will always be my favorite FF Game and Terra will always be my favorite female character from FF and gaming in general!
      After the video, I feel I should definitely play FE3 at some point this year!

Back then, they could only say so in interviews and such, but now with social media, I always get a nice warm feeling when when one game developer who like and respect complements another game dev who I also like and resect.

      That would have been specially viable if Final Fantasy had a remarkable presence in Nintendo platforms around the mid to late 00s, when i believe the gaming culture became more warmed up for crazy crossovers (in great part thanks to SSBB). Also if Final Fantasy Tactics took off as a successful side franchise. But the Advance games failed to match the PS1 classic, leading to their tragic end.
      It's very easy to imagine a modern style crossover on the 3ds years ago, as the FE game gets a FFT dlc, and a new FFT game gets a FE dlc.

    I've always been a huge FF fan, ever since I played FF1 on the NES, and FF6 is also my favorite FF game. I love the fact that that one photo of Kaga that everyone knows is the one from the interview with him and Sakaguchi.
    I think the connection between the two goes even deeper than this interview, though. It was during the development of FF6 that Sakaguchi came up with the idea for Final Fantasy Tactics. Because of working on FF6 and then FF7 in quick succession, he was never able to give any of his time to it then, and it wouldn't be until Yasumi Matsuno, creator of Tactics Ogre, joined Square that it would finally be created. I don't know this for sure, but I imagine that Sakaguchi's enjoyment of Fire Emblem, and possibly FE3 specifically, was what inspired him to come up with the idea for Tactics.
    Further, I wonder if Kaga's enjoyment of Final Fantasy was what inspired him to create a bigger and more grandiose story for FE4. I remember reading that he didn't even really want FE4 to be a strategy game, and wished it could be more of a party based RPG (which also explains some of the odd choices in game mechanics). Looking at the later work of these two men after this interview seems to indicate that they were equally inspired by one another.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Год назад +1

      FFT's base is absolutely Tactics Ogre. That was the definitive source of inspiration for the game. Matsuno got in the game, with the authority position he had, because of that tremendous achievement of creating TO for the Snes.
      But it's also true that FE, being the first japanese strategy rpg, was the game that created everything, the whole culture of the srpg genre. While TO is a heavy deviation from FE's form, it's undeniable that it only exists because FE created and validated the srpg culture in Japan in first place.
      TO belongs to a time when there were already a decent competition in the market: Shining Force, Langrisser and others imitating FE's form. Then there came games like Front Mission and TO on the Snes proposing a new form.

    IMO FE3 being the best selling game in Japan explains a lot why a lot of people there are fond of Marth and FE1 as a whole in spite of the NES game not doing so well there.
    As for Final Fantasy, while I liked 6 a lot, I personally had a bit more fun with 4 and 5, though mostly for nostalgia reasons.

    • @velvetbutterfly
      @velvetbutterfly Год назад +1

      I feel the OVA made to promote FE3 was also a huge plus in cementing Marth has the face of the franchise and if it wasn't for FE3 picking up such steam, it likely would have been Sigard (64) or Leif (Melee) who would have appeared in Smash and been the one to be the global face of the franchise

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Год назад +2

      FE3 was truly the first breakthrough of the series. And the GBA game was just the 2nd breakthrough and the 1st international breakthrough. The 3DS game did it a 3rd time.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Год назад +1

      @@velvetbutterfly FE was born in the same model of other rpgs in the sense that sequels are normally not strict continuations (those are exceptions) and the cast is constantly rotating. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Megami Tensei, and others set that from the beginning. And FE2 followed that as well.
      But then FE3 was a remake and such a breakthrough for the series that it boosted the FE3 cast and story above the others, making it look like Marth has a big place in the series, when in fact he only has 2 games. Also there's no implying that the other protagonists are bad or much worse. It's just that the FE3 breakthrough was well exploited by Nintendo in many multimedia forms. Anime, manga, card games, toys too if im not mistaken.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Год назад +1

      @@velvetbutterfly I'm not sure about that speculation about the face of the franchise. There are games that simply lack that, like Tales... there's no remarkably more prominent protagonist that works as the definitive face of the franchise. Official crossover material tends to put many protagonists together and with a little focus to Cless, Stahn, for being classics, and other popular protagonists. And if there's a recent popular game, that game's protagonist will be promoted and that's all.
      Maybe that would have happened in FE as well. In part that's what happens with secondary FE chars in SSB: Roy in Melee because he was new, Ike in Brawl because he was new (FE10), and so on.

    My only Square Enix game is Triangle Strategy which was a gift from my brother last Christmas. I enjoyed it a lot, still working on getting the true ending. As far as Fire Emblem games goes, my favorite remains Fates since that is what got me into the franchise but I've played the others mainline games and can understand why FE3 would be a favorite amongst many fans of the community. A close second would be a tie between Awakening and Three Houses.

      It seems you got it wrong. FE3 is a japanese phenomenon only. Westerners started from the GBA games or later ones, and they are already quite developed and optimized with quality of life features, that make it very hard to try and appreciate FE3. It doesnt even have weapon triangle yet, to give an idea. Also no supports, no conversations, no weapon rank, no special skills. For westerners FE3 hardly would get in the top 10 picks. Maybe the DS remake can be in many people's top 10s, and still not high even after adopting some quality of life features. This is a case when the asian and westerners have to be separated because the statement doesnt work for the community as a whole.

    I know FE was suffering stagnation, but it still really bugs me that New Mystery didn't get an official localization. It's as big and complex as Awakening but with more linear progression, has the Hardin ending vs. the true ending, it laid the template for a lot of Awakening (no wonder Awakening was set as a requel to Marth's saga), and is too recent for me to not feel guilty about pirating it. Old Mystery not getting mentioned because I both know less about it (heading over to watch the aforementioned review right after this) and because FE localizations weren't even a thing during 3's time.
