Kobo definitely played the fool to screw Koyori. That long pause was her debating whether or not she should finish her so quickly lol
yep 😂
I forgot it was also called the fool's mate
I always call it scholar whenever somebody tries/pulls it off.
Edit: im a dumbass I didn't watch the video I thought she did a scholar, but it was actually a fools mate pretty rare to be able to do it after 6 turns in the match.
surely 🤓
The first thing Kobo did after Koyori opened up for the fool's mate was pick up the queen, at 0:43. She saw it right away, and let it go for a few more turns.
EDIT: Nevermind, the pawn was still there, and could've blocked. Could've still been a quick checkmate, though, and Kobo was definitely watching it.

[Analysis]
Opening:
Even before the game begins, Koyori plays mind games with Kobo by claiming that the black pieces are stronger by virtue of their appearance. Confused but undeterred, Kobo plays d4, a cultured opening move. Koyori responds with c5, an unconventional gambit offering a free pawn in exchange for rapid activity. Kobo declines the gambit and opts instead to strengthen her control of the center of the board with e4. Koyori again challenges Kobo's center pawns with f5, another gambit with an undefended pawn. She also bluffs that she is not even thinking about her moves as a show of strength. Kobo declines once more and overdefends her d-pawn with c3.
Midgame:
Koyori brings out her horsey to add another attacker to the undefended e-pawn. Kobo also brings out her horsey. Koyori draws first blood, taking the e-pawn by moving in an L-shape. As she does so, she verbally taunts her opponent, dealing psychological damage. Kobo, enraged, strikes back by surprise attacking Koyori's c-pawn with a diagonal pawn move. Then, calculating with all the power of Stockfish, Koyori begins a kingside pawn storm with g5.
Endgame:
Mercilessly, Kobo takes the pawn, which has only 1 defender to 2 attackers. Koyori attempts to en passant the horsey on g5, to no avail. She then attempts to snipe the c-pawn in a straight line from the bishop, not realizing that they aren't playing FPS Chess. Finally, she makes her move: a5!! Just like AlphaZero, she begins a pawn storm on the opposite side of the board. This kind of flanking maneuver is a highly advanced tactic meant to overwhelm the target by force. Unfortunately for Koyori, Kobo takes advantage of Koyori's overextended frontline and deals a fatal blow: checkmate with the queen on h5. A long-fought victory without warning, leaving Koyori shocked and in awe of Kobo's hidden genius. The chess speaks for itself.

I see you are a member of a certain primate society

Ah, the fastest game of hololive chess yet. Merciful accidental checkmate instead of the usual eternal hell of trying to figure out how to win in the end game
end games are fun to watch but horrendous to play
That's one of the main advantages of going for the checkmate early on. There are likely to be so many pieces surrounding the king that they don't have anywhere to retreat to.
Kobo picked up the queen at 0:43 when koyori opened up her king. It def wasn't accidental

It was actually kind of nice of Kobo to pretend she won by accident. Koyori didn't even know the pieces, and Kobo didn't want to make her feel bad for losing so easily.
Yeah when Koyori was surprised that pawns attacked diagonally i was like "Oh no...please go easy on her at least a little bit."
Fools mate extended version
Kobo looks like she is aiming for a check but accidentally got a checkmate on the last move
I doubt she was aiming for anything and yet she hit it like a MW2 trickshot
@@SirFooplesTheThird nah, she definitely saw the play coming, you can see at 0:45 Kobo goes straight to the queen to line up a check at h5 (the same place she lines up the checkmate later in the game), but Koyori's pawn could've still blocked by moving her pawn to g6. She was waiting for Koyori to move the pawn up to g7, which she later does. The second she does, Kobo moves her knight, which was blocking her queen, from f3 to g5, lining her queen up for the checkmate at h5. She even says "bye bye" the second Koyori moves her pawn. Kobo played her like a goddamn fiddle and feigned ignorance the whole time.
@@SirFooplesTheThird she actually not bad at chess
@@SirFooplesTheThird she’s definitely played chess in class competitions before. Im sure of it
When else would you get a checkmate?
Kobo gave away so many signs it's comical to watch. Picking the queen, the upward glance followed by a smile quite a bit before ending, turning fluent in Jap after her senpai was flustered.
Good sport on her end though, respecting her senpai.
This is possibly the most hilarious game of Hololive chess yet! It’s also one of the shortest chess matches I’ve ever seen (in terms of moves played).
For me the most hilarious club house games moment was during ina's and pikamee's collab when ina was so insistent to not play chess until she did a random game and it landed on chess
I used to consistently mate people in like 4 moves before moving up in rank to around 700 elo. I've given up on the game since then though.
The shortest game of chess is 2 moves for each player. White pawn 2 spaces forward, Black pawn blocking the Queen moves up, White moves a second pawn, Black moves the Queen down and wins.
The game you just witnessed is actually this, with some fluff where Kobo hadn't yet noticed Koyori's King was open. Or, at least, was opening up the way to Koyori's king.
See MoistCritikal vs xqc, who are coached by pro chess players but the game is so short
@@Gulyus The technical term for that scenario is the Mad King iirc. It is the quickest checkmate theoretically possible, even if nobody will ever do that. The more reliable variation which often will catch beginners by surprise is the Shepherd's Mate, which this mess sort of resembled.
"I don't know what actually happened."
*The Ravenclaw lied as naturally as she breathed*
The funniest part to me is that it could have ended in 3. And I’m positive Kobo saw that Scholar’s Mate right away and let it slide 😂

0:47 kobo already figured out the strategy the moment she selected the queen, but she hold it because she need to make koyori's pawn second from left disappear first.
I agree with the assessment that she was trying to go for check, but didn’t expect it to turn into a mate.

Thank God, this was quick.
She almost made shepherd mate, is one of the basic moves of chess.
It wasn't a fool's mate?
@@buffedpizzarolls5635 No, fool mate you play based on the opponent's move (a dumb move). Shepherd mate you play with the queen and bishop, but in sacrifice form, it is an attack move. The match has fewer variation patterns and the move is easily defended by a move from one of the knights (hardly works against someone experienced).

GM Kobo Kanaeru when?
When I played chess with my grandpa as a kid, i remember moving two pieces and being in checkmate.
He looked both amused and concerned at the same time.
I was white player, moved the pawn diagonal from my king, grandpa saw this, moved pawn to let his bishop through, I moved another pawn, he moved his bishop into checkmate position…
I think that’s how it went, it was close to two decades ago.

Kobo actually could have done it in 3 moves for sure maybe in 2 if she moved her left center pawn first and koyori moved her 3rd from the left pawn like she did.

I think she knew more than let on.
I recently start to learn chess by myself on the internet. The webpage taught me that e7 pawn is literally a 'protector of the king' bc if you move him like koyo did, that's what happens.
edit: it was f2 what i meant, not e7. thank you replies :)
Dang I'm too newbie I don't even know what i'm saying XD
Its generally not recommended to move the f pawn because its susceptible to being checked by the queen. Similar to this game, its possible to get mated in two moves only.
If a guide actually said that about E7, this is quite what it would have meant. It's normal for E and D to advance first to take as much of the middle as you can. It's (From the white side) F and G that should stay put to guard where you'll be after castling right and H should move on the first chance that you have nothing more important to do to avoid getting cheesed by the famous "back-rank mate."
@@SpottedZebra Nah, it’s also F2 for white. C2 isn’t even on the same diagonal as the king.
Which would be fine because you can still defend with the G pawn, or if you've previously moved the E or D pawns or still have your king's knight available, you have other means to block or escape, but in those few moves, Koyori managed to remove every possible defender while digging herself into an impossible hole... It's actually kind of impressive how badly she played!
I noticed this at 0:48 It looks like Kobo was actually going to going to finish Koyori quicker, but decided to play it out a little bit more. Sasuga demon lord Kobo-sama
Koyori lost the game at 0:43, but it took Kobo 2 more minutes to see it... and even Kobo didn't understand how she won.
Cannot wait to see the analysis of the game on chess channels, truly the Kobo's inmortal
That "CHECKMATE OH" was the most anime shit ive ever heard from Kobo
The best part is that move was there since their 2nd move and kobo raised the queen up looking like she was going for it but put it down and played around.

Kobo: You cannot even begin to comprehend, the bounds of my forthcoming genius
I bet Koyori's Knight is Kobo's spy. When the two knights clashing, the black knight give an important information to the white knight, that "the king is unprotected, and the guards around is still sleeping." 🤔
The first two moves are prime "Fool's Mate" material for black. It's literally THE position for Fool's Mate in 2.

i thought that kobo might miss the queen checkmate there but to my surprise she got it, that was pretty hype :)
~To confuse enemy, you must confuse yourself first~
So in case anyone is curious in shogi pawns only move forward and attack forward. So there was probably some confusion there.
0:46 I think white has a funny mate here with qh5+ g6 from black to defend, followed by be2. If gxh5 (hanging queen taken), bxh5 is checkmate
Haha yea this pattern also exists in From's gambit in the Bird opening. Moving the F pawn in the opening has its risks

Wow can't believe Kobo didn't go for the coveted bong cloud opening.
Possibly a major blunder?
Kobo was pretty close to being checkmated herself. a few more moves, and she would have been checkmated if she didn't notice the way her own king, queen and bishop were lined up had the match continued after that move.
Kobo was nowhere near being checkmate. She was safe the whole time. Sure the position is open if black queen come out early, it just gonna get hunted by Bishop and Knight while White develops normally.
@@redace4821 oh most definitely. but thats if she had noticed. but the way they were playing ,however, she seemed beyond clueless of that opening. i mean i could be terribly wrong on that and she had planned to cover that later and neither of them expected the checkmate coming so soon, but i'm just going by observation of how they were making their moves. in all honesty i would love to have a chess match collab with them as i absolutely love chess. even played against a competitive player once and got a compliment from them, still lost in the end, but the point still stands. but they would never bat an eye at a tiny insignificant 100 sub channel like myself.
@@anime4life209 it seem she definitely know the move she took, look at 0:47 she was already holding the queen and checking the path, she didnt attack immediately because the pawn infront of the knight spot could block that check, all she need was for Koyori to move that foward (which she did) and thus checkmate
@@henrycooper3431 ahh. i might have missed that. i tend to plan several steps ahead even if i'm watching someone else play (its an odd quirk of mine) so that might have caused me to miss that.
@@anime4life209 i would say being ablr to calculate steps ahead of time is a good ability to have, i always get cornered because i couldnt predict the queen rush several times
And im sure alot of us usually miss those obvious things
If a king has no valid moves that wouldn't result in checkmate (ie if it's blocked in by its own pieces) and it's put in check it's instantly a checkmate. Here, the queen was able to attack the king diagonally and because the king's only possible move was diagonal which would still be in the same line of attack and has no pieces that could be moved to block the attack it's checkmate.
