    R.I.P. Dave Carpender. Saw these guys at the Keystone Berkeley in the seventies. This song was written by Jonathan Richman. Goin’ faster miles per hour. Oh, those were the days.

    RIP Dave Carpenter lead guitar.
    Was a friend of mine. I didn't know him long, but was such a kind and caring individual.

    Greg Kihn, back in the day going to Tower Records in Brea to flip thru the vinyl and have a great time recording cassette copies at home.

    This is typical of the energy of his shows back in the day- stood next to Eddie Money at his gig (Keystone Berkeley 1981)

    Who knew Greg Kihn ever had wild, screaming fans? I might have to start respecting him!
    Anyway, he's got every right in the world to cover this song; it was his band backing Jonathan Richman on the post-Modern Lovers version that was a big hit in the U.K.

    How cool is a great tune that is basically 2 chords and a melody. It's primal rock. I get emails all the time thanking me for this upload, Heck I'm glad I can access it at anytime myself. It's great that Dave and the boys live on.

    Yes,the guy with the cigarette,Gary Phillips,WAS in Earache...I mean,Earthquake,another great Bezerkeley band. The lineup here is Greg Kihn on that Ricketyback 12-string,Larry Lynch drums,Steve Wright bass,Gary Phillips 2nd guitar,and my ol pal the great Dave Carpender on lead. First heard Dave with his earlier band,Lazarus,which was a cutting-edge power quartet from Berkeley. Personnel : Pete Barsotti vocal,Steve Barsotti bass,Dave Carpender lead,Steve Nelson drums{later w/Earthquake}

    By the way, this might have been the BEST lineup of the GKB. The "original" quartet (second album) was great, but adding Gary in, just gave that much more full a sound, and an additional dimension. Yeah, Gregg Douglass was great, Satchmo was great, but both ushered in an evolution of the sound, especially with Satriani on lead. This was still good ol' trenchmouth nightclub rock & roll!

    @ricv64 good job,very close. I was in that scene,which is why I recall these things. As I say above,the cigarette dude is Gary Phillips. Robbie Dunbar was a fine guitarist,way underrated. I remember seein him on the UC Berkeley campus one day with his Pignose amp,guitar case on the ground with a few bux in it,playin Sweet Jane. They called themselves Purple Earthquake as a young band - first met them when our band shared the bill w/them in Tilden Park at a little lodge of some kind. Good times!

    That's an Italian made Vox 12-string called a Phantom 12. GK's still got 2 of them. I've got a Vox Tempest 12 in my basement. Has a neck like a pipe, but an E-fret in front of the nut at the top of the neck which held the tuning better.. No one ever did that but Vox. You'll notice the Vox was always in tune. Brian Jones of the Stones always played Vox. And off course there's the Vox Super Beatle amp.

    Thanks,man..I shoulda looked closer. I've seen Rickenbacker 12s before,incl a pic of Greg and the boys on the back cover of 'Next Of Kihn'. So shame on me,you're dead right. And I admire your knowledge,which is obviously more extensive than mine. I left Berkeley just as GKB was taking off ('78),didn't even know Dave was in the band. Saddened to learn just yesterday of his passing in 2007. He was a powerful,disciplined player back when he was just leaving high school.

    @nicademus666 Thanx,but I can't take credit. Actually got that one from a guy who runs a music shop in Berkeley called Subway Guitars. Goes by the handle of FatDog Sam. Last time I saw him I said congrats for getting a Thank You on a Joe Satch album. He just gave me this dull look and muttered something. Guess he doesn't like Metal !

    Thomas.... is the tuning issue that which caused the change from the Rickety to the Vox? The Vox was cool, but NOTHING beats the bright tone of the Rick!
    For a short while, I had a Vox Mark 12 (teardrop body).... solely because Kihn played a 12 Vox! (and I couldn't afford the Rick 360-12) I remember that e-fret, but was too young and dumb to know why it was there....

    You know they kind of butchered the meaning of this song - it's not a rock song - it;s a song about alienation.

    • @BenCulture

      Right you are. Jonathan nailed it in his third release of the song, "Roadrunner (Thrice)" when he sang "I'm in love with my own loneliness," and "The highway is my only girlfriend." But I don't mind if others re-interpret it. The Sex Pistols did great without their singer even knowing the lyrics!
