Thanks for the great background and insight on Bolt D oro. It was a pretty cool look at the pedigree. I would love it if you did more of these videos!! I find it quite interesting to get to know the horses.
Thank you Jay. I always like the way you analyze and explain things. Last year you called out the Kentucky Derby winner. I'm looking forward to your analysis and choice for this year's race. Be well
Jay C. Nehf hi jay an amazing derby ,,I hear a lot on the field for the preakness if u have insights let me please know I heard Mick this day if it was a clear day he will run doro ,,please respond ,,as always I'm a fan of yours, make a preakness video .also how's the great lord admiral when is he racing again..
Good to get your take on the bumping incident. Looking forward to the McKinzie video. These two certainly seem to have the edge on the rest of the possibles for the KY Derby this year.
Jay thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it. It looked like both riders were race riding and not giving the other an inch, I could see maybe where Bolt d'Oro initiated the contact, and maybe where Mike Smith and McKinzie made even more contact pushing or forcing Bolt d'oro out several path's. I'm actually pulling more for Bolt d'Oro, I like him more, and I really like his trainer, he seems like a really nice guy, and the way he handled that situation after the race was very classy. Nothing against Baffert, he's a good trainer, but he's won his share. I'll pull for Bolt d'Oro and Mick Ruis in the Ky. Derby. I've got some on him in the last early Derby pool at 7-1, along with in an exacta box. Now I need to find me a good long shot horse to come in with Bolt d'Oro. I'm looking at several that may be a good price in the Derby to hit the board, but I'll have to see how they do, I like Enticed, Instilled Regard and My Boy Jack, but I'll have to see how they do. Do you have any early Derby horses you watching that could offer some value? Thanks, John
Jay, once again Fantastic analysis. I do believe the weather was a factor. We'll see what rivalry develops with these guys. Can you look at MAGNUM MOON winning the Rebel? Looked like a piece of cake....not blowing hard & easy gallop out after the wire. Maybe he breaks the Apollo curse?.. Thanks!!
Pletcher has a really poor record with something like 50 Derby starts and 2 wins. He nails all the preps and has nothing left for the big show. Maybe he's finally getting his management of the training on track. Hard to get enthusiastic.
Jay, great video and analysis! This rivalry has the potential to be a classic battle through the Triple Crown races and beyond. However, I think Justify has a big opportunity to throw some cold water on the entire affair. Although he has less track experience than the other two horses, Justify may have the talent to dominate the 3YO class.
Good Job Jay!! great commentary. If the winner of the Derby also wins the Preakness, this year Ill be at the Belmont Stakes, gotta see me a Triple Crown in person....... well pretty difficult to do. Hey BTW why did Lord Admiral scratch?
Hi Jay. I have been watching Lord Admiral since you started with his videos and have really enjoyed them. I have just recently purchased a TB mare and plan to breed her. I am very excited entering the racing world via breeding. I have to agree with Don Casey comments of the big heart gene coming from the maternal side. Concerning Secretariat, I thought his big heart came from his maternal side due to Princequillo. Am I correct in saying that?
Yes, and Something Royal also produced Sir Gaylord who was Derby favorite but was injured and retired before the race. He sired English Derby winner and champion broodmare sire (bingo!) Sir Ivor.
Love seeing the history of Bolt d'Oro. Loved seeing Northern Dancer, Secretariat and Buckpasser in his pedigree. Being Canadian, I remember the Dancer, and you can't convince me the "large heart gene" doesn't exist after what Secretariat did in 1973 !!! Looking forward to your next video! When does Lord Admiral, or either of your other two race next? Thanks for the time!! Good Luck at the Races!!
Jay C. Nehf Thank you for taking the time to answer. I remember how hectic it was getting horses ready for race day. I used to work inKingston Ontario, Toronto, Montral and Ottawa with Standardbreds.
Great info! Mike Smith? What the hey? Can't wait to hear about McKensie! I too believe in the big-heart gene! I think Bolt d"oro's mom has a fantastic pedigree, regardless of her performance!
LOVE Bolt but I do not see him winning the Derby. I have him coming in 6th. Justify will be Second and that is all I can give on my picks. :) I do wish you the best and for your sake Jay, I wish you Huge luck with Bolt.
Jay, Another horse I really like is "West Coast". MAN! Watched some races and he goes to the outside, way outside and brings it home so awesome. Love watching these beautiful brutes Run. Wish I could watch the race with you. Would be awesome.
the Sunland Derby may end up being a useful race, it's winner ran 2nd in the local prep. Reride, the horse that won that prep will race in the UAE derby this Saturday. 😁
I thought that was a horrible DQ. At the top of the stretch, I thought Bolt came in on Mckinzie and in the stretch Mckinzie leaned on Bolt pushing him out one path. Even if you believe the bumping at the top of the stretch was inconclusive like the stewards claimed, similar bumping in the stretch happens all the time and is ignored. The rule is that you can't cost a horse the opportunity of a better placing, not that the stewards thought that Bolt would have gone past Mckinzie if Mckinzie wasn't leaning on him. The rule is is weirdly and vaguely worded and seemingly only applies near the finish line. I also don't understand how it was a unanimous decision when it took ~20mins. My irrelevant rant is over. =D Thanks for the pedigree videos. I'm clueless when it comes to pedigrees and these videos are interesting and helpful.
Remeber when Baffert's horse took out Shared Belief immediately leaving the gate in the BC Classic a few years ago? They didn't DQ him because they felt the start didn't effect the finish. But how many times have we seen a horse get a bad jump out of the gate and everyone blames it on the poor start. I don't think the bumping at the quarter pole here was a factor, but approaching the wire when fatigue is a big factor, yes, I think it did. The stewards also have to send a message to the jocks that they won't tolerate that crap.
I agree with your earlier assertion that the racing stewards would prefer NOT to take action, which is why they almost never DQ a jockey for early infractions.
Yeah I thought Bayern should have been DQ'd. It seems to me that being taken out at the gate would have added to the horse's fatigue. I understand that pretty much anything goes at the gate, I just don't agree with that. That kind of race riding happens all the time and no one is DQ'd. My problem is, I don't know where the line is and I'm sure the stewards don't know either.
I dont understand why Makinze was replaced, In football if the offense, WR ingages in contact past the 5 yard line the DB has the right to bang back. I was taught in horse racing as long as you keep your line it is yours.
The stewards have to encourage safe riding. Push back in football and you might get bruised and battered, but in a horse race you could go down and take several others with you. A rider was killed last week in PA.
Jay C. Nehf I love your videos and what happened to Flores is terrible. While in horse racing fouling results in death. I also understand that horses are competing to win while having a lot to learn at three. I found it disharting to watch Makinze get batterd by an out of control Bolt D Oro and then as Makinze finally got gassed and bumped back they pentilize him. I wanted Bolt to win but if your going to play bumper cars Castellano should be disqualified not Mikinzi.
Doesn't the large heart gene come through the maternal side but is expressed in the male offspring? So don't we have to look at Something Royal for what was passed on to Secretariat, who then passed it thru Weekend Surprise, who then passed it to AP Indy, who passed it thru Globe Trot, who then passed it on to Bolt D'Oro. If I recall the story, Buck Passer had the speed, and Sonething Royal was known for her stamina.
If the big heart gene is passed through the maternal line but expressed in the male offspring, how would Secretariat, Buckpasser, or AP Indy pass it on? My guess is that there may be 'a gene' involved with this trait, but that even the exceptional heart size and capacity is not due to one gene, or one pair of genes. Thoughts Dan or Jay???
OK, so Somethingroyal's sire was Princequillo. He had to have passed the X chromosome to Somethingroyal, she had to have passed the chromosome on to Secretariat. Bold Ruler was Secretariat's Sire, known for speed. The Princequillo line was known for stamina. I believe that Somethingroyal was raced once but never clocked! She has to be known for being a blue hen! She was 19 when she gave birth to Secretariat! I believe she had 3 more foals after Secretariat. However, sadly, Bold Ruler passed away from either nasal or trachea cancer after Secretariat was born. I have to say that not only did Secretariat have the largest heart, he was deemed the perfect equine specimen! He was balanced and durable! Beautiful deep chest, short back and the most intelligent eyes that I have ever seen on a horse. I believe in the large heart theory, however, there have to be other metabolic factors that have to work in perfect tandem(heart/lungs). Can you imagine that Penny Chenery lost the coin toss to Bull Hancock. The coin toss and handshake that her father made before he took ill! Her loss was Secretariat! However Penny Chenery knew what was in that beautiful colt's pedigree!
Maybe Baffert is right about the theory of the large heart. Do you think a breeder will sell a horse that has lines to Secretariat and his ancestry without xraying the horse to be sure he is not giving a diamond for the price of an zirconia? Just having the chromosomes is not guarantee of the qualities of the enlarged heart, because it is not there. And it is not JUST a large heart that made Secretariat the champ he was (Only horse that won the Triple Crown in time record for the three races being the record of mile and a half a WORLD RECORD never equaled). He was a complete package of all that made him great and that is what can be passed trough the genotype to his progeny. The package that is missing some items but that still is very good to make very good LESSER champions.
I thought Medaglia d'Oro was about the toughest, gamest horse I had ever seen. His fight passes onto his kids. Agreed about Buckpasser and Secretariat's heart-gene. Bolt d'Oro is from real hickory horses.
Baffert is loaded with contenders and 4 of the last 6 Derbies were won by West Coast horses: I'll Have Another, California Chrome, Nyquist, American Pharoah. Beware!
He went off his feed, but didn't have a fever or other symptoms. We enter tomorrow for next Friday on the hillside course. Let's hope the race fills and they put us on the card! LAst time we entered this race only 3 horses were in.
Jay...any chance Baze gets the ride? He swept the wkend Stakes, down the Hill course & has amazing success, it being his fav. distance & race course. Hope L.Ad gets an outside gate which is really to his advantage. ...THE BEST to you & Cincy.
Mike Smith hit Bolt with Mckinzie, went wide with Justify to block Bolt again... What a Snake. Youll never get a Triple crown like Victor Espinosa who rides clean and was Blessed
Horrible DQ here. Bolt had the whole stretch to get by Mckenzie and he couldn't do it. Bolt knocked McKenzie sideways at the top of the lane. Both horses will be running for second anyways behind Justify!
Thanks for the great background and insight on Bolt D oro. It was a pretty cool look at the pedigree. I would love it if you did more of these videos!! I find it quite interesting to get to know the horses.
Mc Kinzie is next
Thank you Jay. I always like the way you analyze and explain things.
Last year you called out the Kentucky Derby winner. I'm looking forward to your analysis and choice for this year's race.
Be well
This looks like a much tougher bunch of 3 yo's than last year. Thanks for putting the pressure on me! LOL
Keep us informed on your future races with your great horses ..u make horse racing even better with the insights u give ,thanks so much,
Wow! that's a lot to live up to! Thanks
Jay C. Good to get your take on the bumping incident. Looking forward to the McKinzie video. These two certainly seem to have the edge on the rest of the possibles for the KY Derby this year.
Baffert has a barnful of top 3 y.o.'s. it ain't fair! Wah!
LOL he always does
Jay thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it. I'll have to give it some thought. Right nnow I'm just looking at the West coast guys
I have a feeling Bolt will win the the Kentucky Derby this year I like is post position 11 . We'll see. thanks for the video insight.
BOlt is my sentimental favorite since Mick R is a buddy and Bolt's a great runner. BTW, his stride is about 6" shorter than Justify's
Thanks!!

Ken, I have to agree with you, but wouldn't it be cool?
Yes, it would be so cool. I keep thinking of Affirmed and Alydar or even further back with Damascus, Buckpasser and Dr. Fager! Rivalries are such fun.
Very cool vid. I will be watching him in the derby.
Thanks Teresa
Thanks Mr Jay, your video is well explained and easy to understand.
Thanks Jose
Good Job Jay!! great commentary. If the winner of the Derby also wins the Preakness, this year Ill be at the Belmont Stakes, gotta see me a Triple Crown in person....... well pretty difficult to do. Hey BTW why did Lord Admiral scratch?
LA went off his feed for a couple of days, no fever, just stressed out after a breeze. He's become a real sensitivve guy.
Hi Jay. I have been watching Lord Admiral since you started with his videos and have really enjoyed them. I have just recently purchased a TB mare and plan to breed her. We entered LA today for Friday but looks like they will move the race to Saturday. So we have to enter all over again.
Jay C. Nehf Thank you for taking the time to answer. I remember how hectic it was getting horses ready for race day. I used to work inKingston Ontario, Toronto, Montral and Ottawa with Standardbreds.
Jennifer Lehman i7
Mike Warren Yes? What's up?
I learned today about the large heart theory. Thank you!
my pleasure
Great info! Mike Smith? What the hey? Can't wait to hear about McKensie! I too believe in the big-heart gene! I think Bolt d"oro's mom has a fantastic pedigree, regardless of her performance!
Mc Kinzieis coming right up
Bolt wins the kentucky derby ,he's amazing ,,also lord admiral is a great horse ..I hope things get better in his next races ,,
Thanbks Wesley. He surprised a lot of people with that terrific run. They didn't have much faith in Bolt around the track here at Santa Anita.
I’m getting one of his sons, tonto d’oro for 1,500. He’s 3 and I’m so excited
LOVE Bolt but I do not see him winning the Derby. I have him coming in 6th. Justify will be Second and that is all I can give on my picks. :) I do wish you the best and for your sake Jay, I wish you Huge luck with Bolt.
Bill, I just might have to agree with you but remember, 4 of the last 6 Derby winners came from Santa Anita. I haven't touched on Solomini yet.
True Jay. Going to be a good Derby for sure!
Jay, Another horse I really like is "West Coast". MAN! Watched some races and he goes to the outside, way outside and brings it home so awesome. Love watching these beautiful brutes Run. Wish I could watch the race with you. Would be awesome.
My Boy Jack, McKenzie, Flameaway, Solomoni
I agree with Bill. He can finish off of a fast early pace which is very special.
I'm a fan of bolt D oro
Personally I love horses that can bump and check and not be bothered because in the 20 horse field of the Kentucky Derby, its impossible to avoid
I think that's absolutely essential
I like Audible because he's bred to run all day long i saw his. Last race.he is a winner.
do you have any idea why justify wasnt entered into the Sunland Derby
I hear he's going to the Arkansas Derby
the Sunland Derby may end up being a useful race, it's winner ran 2nd in the local prep. Reride, the horse that won that prep will race in the UAE derby this Saturday. 😁
Salvador Villanueva needed extra time Arkansas is perfect timing for justify
Jay, what do you think about the Justify hype? Is he the real deal?
Video coming soon. He might be the one to pick. Good call
Jay C. Nehf your insight is amazing, thank you for the response and I'm looking forward to the video.
How's T.Lafranc and Lord Admiral?
They are both ok, video soon
Thanks

That's why it costs a mere $250K to breed to him! Unbelieveable, ain't it?
haha- yeah, what a bargain!
The manager at the chase bank in my manhattan neighborhood is touting mendelson,,but usually when she gives me a horse I give it a toss
Baffert is loaded with contenders and 4 of the last 6 Derbies were won by West Coast horses: I'll Have Another, California Chrome, Nyquist, American Pharoah. Beware!
Well she is due to be right, maybe it's with mendelson
why was lord admiral scratched
He went off his feed, but didn't have a fever or other symptoms. We enter tomorrow for next Friday on the hillside course. Let's hope the race fills and they put us on the card! LAst time we entered this race only 3 horses were in.
I am looking forward to Lord Admiral tackling the downhill course because I think the shorter distance favors his recent running style.
Jay C. Nehf I really admire how sensitive you are to your horse's condition, Jay. 👍🏻
Jay...any chance Baze gets the ride? He swept the wkend Stakes, down the Hill course & has amazing success, it being his fav. distance & race course. Hope L.Ad gets an outside gate which is really to his advantage. ...THE BEST to you & Cincy.
Yes there was bumping which I think the inside horse did but I did not see impeding! Intimidation maybe but no foul... the inside horse!!
these inceidents are part of the sport, like questionable calls from an umpire. thanks for your comment; you guys keep it interesting.
I hope mckinze and bolt get a show down aging cuz mckinze is not going in the Santa Anita
He's not out of the KY Derby... yet!
Mike Smith hit Bolt with Mckinzie, went wide with Justify to block Bolt again...

You may be right about Justify
Who does not adore Bolt, but this race was won by McKinzie and taken away from Mac.
Not by enough to offset the interference. I say they are equal, which means any little detail can tip the balance either way
All comes down to post positions and if right horses get good post. Magnum moon won easy. If he gets good post he wins.
Absolutely a big factor in the Derby
