I was just in Japan and Tokyo last month for the 1st time, what really impressed me is their food culture, everything is so accessible and even cheap compared to european standards, and you can get a healthy meal on every corner for literally five bucks. I loved it so much. Hope I can go back some day. Also great channel! Keep it up!
Tbh this isn't just a Tokyo phenomenon. You'll see this across East Asia, in SK and China as well. Seems like they care more about sales by volume than making the maximum profit per meal served.
Dang, this video made me cry of homesickeness. Yes it is a video about fast food... and my parents never let me go to them... but also, it really scratches the surface of something about the Japanese food culture I miss so much!
The US (and Canada) have fast food chains for more than just burgers, sandwhiches and pizza. Like you're missing so many other fastfood restaurants (chinese, indian, italian, lebanese, greek, thai, japanese). Go to any north american shopping mall, and you will see all the types of fast food joints that exist.
Matthew! Wow your channel is amazing! The structure, the quality of the content and the presentation - incredible! I'm currently travelling in Japan and now I feel like I understand this country a lot more through your channel. Arigatou gozaimasu!
Love your work man, just found you through your portuguese food and all your videos are super interesting and informational. Keep it up, your channel will be huge soon!
Awesome channel and awesome content and visuals. Keep it up! Your channel is a sleeping giant. It doesn't do justice to the number of subscribers. You're gonna boom, that is imminent.
Fun facts: i'm pretty sure i went to the exact same Saizeriya when i went to Tōkyō , in march this year It's not that great but it's cheap so it's okay. Also the portion are small so if you aren't that hungry , you can still eat and if you need more you just have to order 2 differents meal , nice concept.
Also, small restaurants in Japan that serve ramen, soba, udon and somen dishes are in many ways fast food restaurants because you're normally expect to finish your bowl or plate of noodles in around 10-15 minutes.
Oh Tokyo! I miss it, it is a city that has an orderly chaos - not sure how to explain it - Everything is made with that " extra high attention to detail", wherever you go it is clean and well organised. On a rainy day, most of the customers are offered a plastic bag to keep your umbrella tidy instead of dripping around and avoid slippery accidents too...!, In terms of food, I am amazed how affordable it is, comparing to those stale burgers and oily hot dogs in NY🤪! ....however, I enjoyed those vans where they served latino food, thats for sure! and no extra tipping☺! thats is one of the points I want to highlight from Japan, you get the service, free water and green tea and a delicious food without extra tipping. I wish I could study japanese in Japan and learn more about their gastronomy. Keep it up please👌 very interesting sight from Tokyo. I am sure it might do well for all those hard working salary men.
yeah this is crazy high quality content, and you've only put out a few vids. im really into this 'food history/culture commentary' topic. more uploads like this and i think the algorithm will bless you
I love your content!! And I have been sharing your videos with friends and family. I am a cook and foodie from Brazil who works with special multicultural events around world cuisine, traditional music and dance. I am a fan! Keep up the awesome work❤️✌🏼✨
I can’t wait to go back to Japan, it’s been 7 years since I’ve been there last. This video was great, I hope it blows up as well. Dude, your subscribers have doubled since I first saw one of your other videos this morning lol. Looks like that Johnny Harris RUclips school was a good investment haha.
there's a good reason i almost never have any sushi anytime i go to japan, even though i like them so much : there's just that many other food to ea. more often than not, my biggest problem is deciding what type of food i'd like to eat rather than finding a place to eat.
They have one for every few seats at the counter. Ramen shops pretty much just serve you the food and that's it. It's to make everything run as smooth as possible.
Imo Tokyo likes fast food so much, and even supermarket food, because of the fast paced rhythm of work and life that most adults live and simply because it's good. I'm from Portugal and I've never been to Japan, so I'm basing this assumption on what I've heard.
I understand about what you are trying to convey, with the notion that fast food should not be unhealthy image. However, I have to disagree in some parts with you. 1) Family Restaurant might be better as a comparison with diner in America. In Japan they have chain for it, yes. But, I can't consider them as fast food. 2) Having burger in the US fast food chain actually not necessarily unhealthy. How people eat compared to how they do activity actually what matters. But, yeah, this is just a way off topic I guess. Anyway, love this video as well, even though it started quite confusing and slow in the beginning. Keep up the work.
In Portugal you might find something similar on big malls in the restaurant area, you the usual fast food but there's other that have alot more variation while being fast to deliver.
*When ppl talk about Japan style fast food and how cheap it is, they FORGET to mention* that Japan also is the Country with the *most APPROVED E-numbers, the artificial stuff* : taste, shelve lasting, juicyness, mouth feel etc. The Gov signed off on those, so companies CAN offer those foods cheaply.
Could you make a video on differences between Tokyo and Osaka. As far as i understand there's something about accents and escalators. But it's tough to understand the topic as a European.
Yoshinoya sadly failed in the US because of poor service from staff and idk why it's so much saltier and crappier, served in a plastic bowl with a typical disposable spoon or fork, yeaa..you were a baby before it closed so an experience you didn't miss out on. The local chicken teriyaki place was usually better. I think an aspect missing from a Tokyo or Japan expeirence to NYC is just not having rude workers and people are pretty chill. NYC you really gotta learn to ignore the world and be in your own little happy place even when there's a fight a table away at a chicken fingers joint you heard was good. Not to mention in NYC I feel more judgement just going to eat alone especially if it's not a fast food place. Food is also overpriced lot of the time and dissapointing. I've come to hate places that make burgers too big to fit in your mouth and you gotta basically knife and fork it. For me real hidden gems usually in some particular enclave.
Fast Food 😐 vs Fast Food, Japan 😳
Nothings faster than street food
Witnessing the birth of a great channel...
👍
I was surprised he has less than 5k subs!!
Just subbed. Gotta make up for the loss of About To Eat.😢
First 5k subs of a future 1m+ for sure. Cant wait to see what you become man!

Bangkok’s street food is quite quick, convenient, and cheap

Man that drop at 0:29 is so satisfying.
PS keep making videos bro your channel is insanely good.

There’s a term specifically that caters to fast food in a sit-down establishment such as Saizeria: Fast Casual.
Also, small restaurants in Japan that serve ramen, soba, udon and somen dishes are in many ways fast food restaurants because you're normally expect to finish your bowl or plate of noodles in around 10-15 minutes.
Another great video! I really enjoying learning from this series!
This Channel will goddam grow

Sho-chan at @10:09!!
Best food in the world, hands down, never disappointed from the most fancy restaurant to the dingy-est ramen-ya. And Im french

I love Japanese fast food so much! I feel like konbini and fast food joints are better than slightly price restaurants here in the U.S...
11:08 in that restaurant they leave a jug of water for you ? Thats so cool , it's always a bother to ask for more liquids , or having to pay more

quality content
Very interesting video
let me raise you shanghai: all of the above plus chinese fast food chains

The Gov signed off on those, so companies CAN offer those foods cheaply.
Getting old johnny harris vibes from this channel. I like it.
I love Tokyo!
Gives me vibes of Johnny Harris . Great!
Damn i missed your videos
Urban density and public transit oriented development allows for that kind of density lol
Western fastfood chain outside western hemisphere often serves as lifestyle food, "luxurious" place and tied to social status
I'm slowly beginning to believe the Thing, Japan meme
You need to do a side-by-side comparison with US Denny’s and Japanese Denny’s. At 3am… 😂 Peak content for ya. そして日本語で注文してびっくりした😮
Could you make a video on differences between Tokyo and Osaka. As far as i understand there's something about accents and escalators. But it's tough to understand the topic as a European.
i wish we had ANY place that served gyudon by me. i hate american rural areas, man
bro - mos burger! - if it still exists! - best "fast food chain" burgers in Tokyo... forget about mcdonalds
Yoshinoya sadly failed in the US because of poor service from staff and idk why it's so much saltier and crappier, served in a plastic bowl with a typical disposable spoon or fork, yeaa..you were a baby before it closed so an experience you didn't miss out on. What ethnicity are you? Chinese and Japanese?
Cool videos. I was really surprised by his accent. Doesn't sound American at all to me.
Good👍
Japan is losing the automotive export market to China maybe exporting their fast food chains might be a good idea.
In N Out isn't "fancy".
Re
everything is a fast food chain for this guy.
I really want an Ootoya-like place in the States. Being able to eat out healthy is so rare here.
