Me and my brother had the German copy as kids. We had limited knowledge of English and German. So we didn't know about the controller swap or statues. Yet through sheer patience we beat him. Socom works the same if i remember right. Every 7th hit counts.
I remember playing MGS when it came out in Japan. My brothers friend had just come back and bought a copy of it. They copied the game at their workplace and I just began playing. Obviously didn't understand it being Japanese but I had a blast. Became immensely stuck and decided to go through EVERY codec frequency, eventually landed on meryl. Got to Mantis and basically brute forced my way through it, none of the first person stuff just a ton of time and attempts. Then the part with the key cards again, became stuck, wandering about and noticed the cards ended up changing colour! Once getting the game in english I was amazed even more! Such a classic. I didn't have access to the internet either until late 1999 either.
on my first playthrough, since the emulator i used wasn't so advanced, i couldn't switch ports, and i didnt know the statue trick, so it really felt like fighting him on hardcore. still one of my favorite boss fight
I recently did this without the benefit of this video. Swinging the busts across the room is also part of his attack pattern initially, after chairs, but after a couple attempts he stops.
My first language is not English so as a kid I could not understand the colonel's advice. I still beat the game. I eventually got a magazine (in Spanish) and learned about the controller ports. For me, this was probably the longest boss battle ever.
I remember talking about mgs1 with my boss at work, and he said when he was a kid he didn't know of the port or the statutes trick, so he spent hours to beat mantis like this
I always knew it was possible, since that's the only way I beat him, I didn't even knew about the control swap or the statues back then, you should see how shocked I was when I found out about it
@@HotdogFontaine I grew up in Mexico, and I was about 12 when I played MGS, so I had to figure out the codec calls with key words, so I didn't bother to answer the codec calls, eventually on twin snakes I found out so I figure out you could do the same thing on the PS version, and the statues, I remember I broke 1, but then I didn't knew if it had an effect on the boss so I ignored them
If you want some silliness to cleanse out the pain of punching Mantis to death, there is another boss you can beat in a different way than intended that some people might not know. The second Sniper Wolf fight in the snowfield, you can run off to the side and be in cover from her shots and use the Nikita from there to fight her.
Hey, made another appearance in a MGS vid this month XD And for strat advice think the only reason i got my fight down faster than yours was from using the 5 punch combo. (punch twice, wait a beat, punch twice, usually the kick will miss, but the punches connect allowing you to do the fight fairly quickly) also it doesn't matter where the first 6 'hits' come from, so you can spray him with the famas or socom till its time for him to take damage, then run up and punch him in the face when it will connect.
My first Mantis play through was on the computer (i.e. no port swapping) and it goes through just as if you already swapped the controller port. So I never had problem dealing with Mantis and even found out about the statues trick, but I never got to know that you can land one out of 7 hits on Mantis without using any tricks till this video
I did know of the controller swap when I first played the game, it being a rather famous thing and all... But I decided to test if you can beat him without swapping and as I did some damage to him it became attempts to beat him without the swap. Though I did use guns.
I don't remember if I tried this on the Playstation or the GameCube version, but I distinctly remember that I found that I could beat him with a war of attrition, using the bandana and the FAMAS to just keep shooting him repeatedly until he went down for the count. So, I suppose every 7th bullet was a hit, like it was with your punches and kicks? and yes, the "So... you used the other..." was still there just like if you did the gimmick you're meant to. Also, I've always heard that bit about the statues, but I've never encountered in while playing. I DO know there's also a joke about the Hind D fight where they tell you to listen with your stereo TV... "What, Snake? You don't have a stereo TV?" can happen, as I had a Mono TV for the longest time...
I was forced to fight him without the controller swap when I replayed MGS1 on the emulator cause I didn't how to do that... I didn't know what to do with the statues either. I mean I knew you had to destroy them, but I didn't know how exactly do that. So that how it was for me.
First time i beaten this boss was by brute forcing fight without knowledge you can switch to P2. Yeah, english is essential to enjoy this game. It took me like 40 -50 minutes if i remember corectly. I'm before watching hole video😊

Lol I love that. You accidentally beat the game that's really impressive.
Neat! I knew it was possible to beat him with guns, if you're good, but I didn't know about the statues.
And I never would have tried fists only.
YES! I figured the best way to really find out is to go to the furthest extreme.
