OMG! I'm British and this is SOOO True! I always want to end up in a lift on my own and if you are holding a door open, don't expect a thank you or any expression of gratitude! I once held a door open for pretty much a stampede of students at my school and around 3 of them said thank you! Ghastly Children...
Ben Nash Really??? I was a usher for my schools talent show but I decided to open the door for some guests around 30-40 for the time I was at the door and only a couple didn't say thank you

To be honest, he gave away that he may not be from these parts, by the way he "correctly" held the door open. Who stands in front of the door when holding it open, he compromised the full opening, by plonking himself there. One must actually stand alongside the door, i.e. their body aligned with the door, making themselves as flat as possible, even if you stand tiptoed, so as not to be a nuisance!

Limbu Sumnima It should be the other way. Car companies passed laws to make sidewalk. People used to walk on roads and people with cars had to try to get around them. Oh how things have changed. They've stolen roads.
If you get uncomfortable in lift, just remember, there are countries where it is customary to greet every stranger padding by and call them "uncle" or "aunt".
