Growing up on our farm in iowa back in the late 70's to mid 80's I can remember our first JD combine as we moved from the corn picker to the combine. It was a JD 55EB three row. Thought we were up town lol. My dad only farmed about 340 acres as he was also a full time carpenter. 1/2 corn 1/2 beans. I miss those days so much! Wouldn't have changed it nothing! I had a very close friend of mine who owned a 4400. He would take me out with him on the fields, and we would hang around while harvesting corn with a 4-row head. Sometimes, we would be out in a muddy field harvesting soybeans. It would also do wheat, no problem. I just loved that little combine.
@@bigtractorpower The 4400 is a worthless combine. They're not worth a damn on any kind of slope whatsoever. We had two of them on our wheat farm in south central Washington. Any kind of chaff build-up would cause the belt turning the cooling screen to come off, which caused the engine to overheat. We upgraded to 6620 sidehill machines in the early 80s, and said good riddance to the 4400s.
True to the tradition of my Grandfather my Uncles worked together and bought 2 combines instead of 4 for four families and saved a lot. At their peak they were farming over 7000 acres. They first had the 40s and 50s Combines. Then the 105. Then the 7700. Then the big titan 2. Then the 90s and Sts. I can’t remember all but they always bought the newest and biggest. These were hard working German farmers. I am very proud of them and my dad also and my Mom and my aunts. Truly a great big Lovely family. ..and today their kids and Grandchildren are keeping the tradition going. My favorite is the 4020 Diesel. Great tractor and the big 8820 Turbo is a favorite of the Combines. Today’s machines are a tech marvel but also expensive and not as reliable.
I love the older machines but that X9 1100 is simply amazing how it runs through the corn. The amount it is able to harvest per hour is absolutely awesome.

How can you not love the X9 combine. I was able to see one and watch one harvest wheat in eastern Colorado in about 45 bu. Grain which didn’t even challenge the machine at all even with the 50 ft. header on it. I ran a 195? 55 JD combine in 1960 and worked in the harvest driving truck behind two S670 machines on 7100 acres of wheat at age 72 this last summer. Hope to be able to at least ride in an X9 next harvest when they come through our country. Enjoyed your Visio on 60 years of JD combines.

I started driving John Deere combines with a model 55 that had no cab on it. There was a 4 speed transmission with a clutch pedal you had to depress which was very hard for a 10 year old kid. I had to stand on the side of the steering wheel and yank on it to turn corners because there was no power steering. I quit farming on the family farm in 1986 when we had 2 model 7700 combines. Our tractors were 8630's, 4430 and a 4620.
