Our “big” combine was a 76 model model IH 815 diesel with a 6 row, 30” corn head. Support equipment was a 1965 model IH DCOF 405 road tractor with a 38’ Trailmobile grain trailer, a 1962 IH Loadstar 10 wheeler and a 400 by Grain O Vator auger wagon, pulled by either a 1256 or 1566 IH tractor. Average corn yields back then were 130 bpa. At times the combine would sit with a full tank, waiting for a truck to return from the elevator.
We downsized in 1982. The row crop equipment was sold at auction in 1982. Dad finished out his working years doing custom fertilizer and custom haying work. I went to town, got a job working for an elevator and escalator manufacturer and spent the next 30 years working for that company. Dad passed in 2017. I never lost my passion for farming and red equipment. Thanks for this video!!

I should’ve mentioned mom was the real hero. She did a lot of running, keeping us well fed and fueled up and occasionally taking a loaded truck to the elevator!!

    Cool story behind them brothers.
About a 5 star hotel that wouldn’t rent one of them a room. He went in the back talked to the manager and came back with the manager who said get him a room, he owns the ground we sit on.. ha!
    Cool to see!

They tell another story that one of the brothers went to town and bought the first scaffold wagon in Christian co. They were big tobacco farmers and he bought all 6 on the lot. Hooked one to his truck and when asked about getting the others said he didn’t care about them he just didn’t want anybody else to get one. Ha!

How soon "large" equipment becomes small. I grew up in the 70's and we had older equipment that was average size for that day. Then I started farming on my own in the 80's and operated large equipment for that time. Today, that equipment looks tiny. Six row corn head with 20 ft grain table. Just one tractor trailer. Many changes in 45 years.

I know some farmers has the computer system on there tractor combine an also the ones in the grain cart tractor where they all are tied into each other. Where it lets the grain driver see the combines gauge’s so when the combine are getting closer to full it let’s the grain driver know to get there because it is getting close . Does your system work like that ??. Thanks

Gleaner makes the best combine on the market in my opinion. The 250 Axial-Flows are also very good. If you want to harvest good quality corn in a hurry, the 9250 with the 4416 head will get the job done well.

Hmm, let's see, a 9250 with a 16 row corn head moving at 3 mph = right at 300 bu per ac. Amazing corn year just about in every state that grows it.
