To my dying day, I will NEVER understand why dual and triple techs didn't just automatically become the standard for all RPGs after Chrono Trigger's release.
It's funny how most of the things in Chrono Trigger didn't become standard for games. Especially Cross in general which tried to apply so much logic to gameplay. People just.... I dunno :|, don't want creativity?
+Floyd Palmer those techs is cool, but if you build the Crono-Magus-Ayla Fomation then you will realize that total dame of their final skill is way bigger than the triple techs of some other fomation :|
Square Enix will most likely never touch this series again. Because they KNOW they will never be able to top it. We'd burn them at the stake if they tried. The first one was made by the DREAM TEAM for Christ's sake. It's beyond current SE's talent.
Is anyone from the Dream Team reachable? Like could we crowd fund an official unofficial sequel from them without SquareEnix knowing? They've taken enough of our coins. I think we could do this. Like they did for Crimson Echoes
I'm sorry, that's very unlikely. Square Enix seems to actively issue cease and desist letters to any and all projects involving Chrono Trigger, even if it's fan made. This series is pretty much done. But, if Final Fantasy VII remastered is a financial success, maybe they'll turn their gaze upon CT and give it a similar treatment.
As someone who is too young to have ever played this on the SNES, I will say that Chrono Trigger has aged BEAUTIFULLY. The story is goofy and fun, but also dramatic and epic. I first played it on Wii Virtual Console, and I constantly found myself saying, "Wow. They were able to do that on SNES?". There were a surprising amount of set pieces and dramatic story moments, and the 16-bit art remains lovely to this day. I don't know if I would play this game every year like Jeremy, but I have the soundtrack on my Ipod, which I listen to regularly.
Yeah I agree its a game that has aged really well. There are some remixes of the songs that are A.W.E.S.O.M.E!!!! ocremix.org/game/16/chrono-trigger-snes Magus and frog's theme are super awesome! ocremix.org/remix/OCR01377
I'm partial to Ayla's theme myself, as well as Chrono's theme, Lucca's theme... you know what? Let's just save time and say the entire soundtrack is friggin' awesome.
I wonder why this was never turned into an anime. Could have maybe even crossed over into Dragon Ball. Very wishful thinking, but still a nice thought :)
Gackt4awesome Nope, Chrono tigger owns mass effect. You have multiple endings each choice matter, mass effect you just change the color, doesnt matter what you do in mass effect. Dont mix Mass effect with Chrono Trigger, they ar enot on same level.
DigitalBerserk That's Mass Effect 3, numb nuts. I said Mass Effect 2, which has multiple endings depending on the level of your Paragon/Renagade meter, choices on the suicide Mission and final decision about giving or not giving the Collector's Base to the Illusive Man.
Can we talk for a sec about how amazing the Super Nintendo is? Mario Allstars+World and World 2 Donkey Kong Country Trilogy Kirby Allstars Super Star Wars Trilogy Star Fox Super Metroid The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Final Fantasy III/VI Chrono Trigger Killer Instinct Mortal Kombat pack Street Fighter II and its versions Jesus Christ what a console. Probably my favorite one to this day.
+murasama87 No matter how good XV may turn out, it is never going to be as good as Chrono Trigger. I hate saying things like that but it is too much of an obvious fact I can't help but mention it. I haven't even heard of XV doing things like that, when did they release that kind of info? Everything I've seen hasn't even mentioned squat about that. Got a link?
+Christian Lampley I'm going to say this as politely as I can: Check your fire before making such a ridiculous statement. No way in hell is my judgement ever blocked by nostalgia (I'm 18 for cripes sakes). I'm probably one of the most unbiased people out there and NONE of the issues I have with XV currently is based in nostalgia. Everything is based in either pure logical fact or pure logical worry. I have said nothing (maybe something a little rash) but nothing to warrant being called one of those idiotic nostalgia-heads that let their love of the past interfere with the enjoyment of the future. I may be quick to judge, I admit that but my judgement is never blocked by an emotional or nostalgic interference. I apologize for that tirade but it is completely justifiable as I just feel steam come from my ears when people say garbage like that to me. I'm the one constantly telling people to get over their nostalgia, not the one who is blinded by it.
I actually do play Chrono Trigger and FFVI once a year. I love both of those games. For me they were the two greatest RPG's ever made. I also have the OST and the Arranged soundtracks for both games. Nobou Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda at the top of their game.
When you learn the story of Magus you're like "HOOOOLY FUCKING SHIT". But then you know the story of Frog and you are like "this shit is sad why I'm having so many emotions with a game?" My point is this game is a rollercoaster of emotions, great gameplay, spectacular directing, awesome story and has one of the most beautiful OST humans could create. Need anything more? Go play this thing while you're still alive damn it...
I loved those little quests that added to Marle, Lucca, and Robo's stories, when the main plot gradually stopped focusing on them. You learn that ever since her mother died, the only person Marle had any real interaction with was her father, which makes her eagerness to escape the castle and make friends make a lot of sense. You find out the whole reason Lucca became the tech genius she is was because of a traumatizing accident that paralyzed her mother, and she work along with her father to make sure his inventions never hurt anyone again. And of course my favorite is probably when Robo's origins are revealed, and he definitively proves that he is more than a machine.
Never played this game before, but holy crap, haven't seen the full review, because you told me not to, so I stopped at the part where you were introducing the mysterious oracle. Weird shit story I want to tell. It's long too, but I'll try to keep it as short as possible. Subscribed to Smooth McGroove more than a year back, because I once checked one of his videos and that song became my instant favorite out of all the titles I've heard him singing. And I've unsubscribed to him, although he makes good videos, nothing topped off my personal favorite acapella song of his. In the course of the months I've faved over 100 other songs. After seeing your review final fantasy VI, you've also mentioned about chrono trigger, that has triggered (get it?) my interest into this game, I've downloaded the rom and the emulator, but I've never really used it. Fast-forward to a few minutes ago I was watching the review and I didn't mind spoilers, so I kept listening, until you've mentioned the soundtrack. I stopped at the part where you were mentioning about the oracle. As a fan of nintendo game soundtracks, I was searching for the title. And there I found smooth McGroove in the results, clicked on his video. The music started playing. It was my favorite acapella song of his that I've forgotten months ago and I now remember the title of the song. It's Zeal's theme, "Corridor of time"
CeeeX Do play Chrono Cross too after it. it is flawed but when it connects all the things in CT, it just goes 'BOOOOOM MIND BLOWN'. Also , the dead sea is the single most beautiful thing you'll ever see in a game :).
Funny Fact : Magus' shadow appears in Chrono Cross when you read a letter from Lucca that says 'Janus might be looking after you right this second' . Actually its a pretty creepy fact .-.
Chrono Trigger has always been my #1 favourite game of all time. I technically own it in four different incarnations (SNES, PSX, DS, ROM), but I let people borrow the PSX and DS ones and I haven't gotten the back yet. This game may even be the reason I absolutely love time travel so much. And, yes, Chrono Cross has FAR too many characters. The only essential characters are: Serge (which includes Secret Spoilery Character based on Serge), Kid, Nikki/Guile/Pierre (the guide to Viper Manor), Glenn/Razzly (depending on the save/not save decision), Fargo, Harle, Leah, Norris, Lord Viper, Riddel, Sprigg, Starky, Steena, and Zappa (which basically cuts the list in half). Though, Pip and Orlha should still be included because I love both of those characters, especially Orlha.
Bardic_Knowledge my team was serge lynx and glenn, with kid norris and leah as backup and swaps. I could never pick a crew for chrono trigger, i wanted all seven to travel together and fight together. Crono is my final wish for smash brothers ultimate...i might start crying on the floor if that ever happens 😢
Dude, I never got to play this game cause I had a Sega and everytime I switched with a NES (aaah the good old days, friends switching consoles for some weeks to enjoy everything there is) none of them ever had it and I was sooooooo wanting to play it. This review = trip down to memory lane. Without even having played it, it simply brings back that time when we had the poster and the entire 90's gaming period that came with it. Top notch review man. Top notch. I personally still can't decide what my favourite game of all time is. I always tend to forget a handful, then remember them, then after a while realise crap, I had forgotten another handful, and rinse and repeat. But I'd have to say Soul Reaver is definately up there as the best story in a game I ever played. Chrono Trigger............ I think its time I finally came over to your sweetness to enjoy you!
I just played it for the first time recently on the ds and I have to say Chrono Trigger certainly holds up for a game that would come out today, not mentioning it's a few months from its 10th anniversary.
Oh, someone else already said it. I was gonna say, my parents played it when I was only a few years old, don't tell me it's only hitting its 10th, lol. Happy 20, CT!
I played the original SNES game back in 1995, before any video walktroughs and Magazine help, i beated this game using a wooden sword half trough the game, untill a friend showed me how to equip the party... I know, I'm stupid, but I remember spending hours playing after school and really was epic, I have it on my laptop and I play it again & again. I agree with you, this is an Awesometacular game.
Edgar Lopez It doesnt have a tutorial for equiping right? its funny, I find most of the tutorials of games now days to be quite annoying and obnoxious. I think a good game requires no tutorial, and teaches you to play trough intuitive level design.I'm not saying chronotrigger had that tho X) frankly I dont remember.
chrono thrigger was the first game that introduced me to the awesomeness of genre called "RPG" and yes i faced the same dfficulty i dont know such things about equipping weapons or buying stuffs. good ol' memory
Yes!!!! I played this game for Super Nintendo and was my first introduction to RPG And is still my favorite game of all time. I bought it again when it was available for the DS and still play today! Best story... Best characters, best soundtrack... Best fighting... Best everything! Definitely one of the greatest games of all time! Loved your review and ways get excited when hearing someone else talk about this game! So thanks!
I think the best thing about Magus being both a villain and a hero is that when you're chasing him as a villain it's because you don't have all the details, you don't know everything and you don't know any better. This is what makes Magus' character really work is the revealing of information. We aren't dumped with his backstory until it's time for him to be the hero. Works really well.
I remember there was a local video store now back in the day we had to go in and rent games just for 3 days and if we return late they charge us... I remember always renting video games on the weekend and Chrono trigger would always be there and I didn't think I was going to like it and I pretty much rinsed all the games there so when Friday night I decided okay I'm just going to play this and I told myself I'll probably shut off within a couple minutes of it.. Even when I got home I didn't play it right away until the next day, I like games where you can put your own name sport games where you can make your own character, so when I put my name and then I heard the soundtrack and I will always remember the seagulls chirping I told myself maybe this game is not going to be that bad.. but after an hour and a half playing it I got hooked on it... No the way I play RPGs if it's possible I liked it always do same missions to get more money and become tougher, now in the beginning of the game all you can kill is mushrooms in the forest and they barely give you any experience points but I was there for like a day just killing so I can get extra experience a little do I know that it would be better to build up your characters after you get your magic...lol but Jeremy is right this could be one of the greatest games ever made and this game is over 20 years old and it can still be compared to today and people are talking about doing a remake but in my opinion just leave this classic alone, it can stand on its own 2 ft and if I was to ever get a load of money either the lottery or other ways I would put everything on the line everything I know to try to buy Chrono triggers property and make it into a movie or a TV show.. I feel the same way about final fantasy 6
what Jeremy said about this game is true. this game was also the game that made me love RPGS. a game that you can always replay and still enjoy this game. chrono trigger is better than most games today, if not all of them. people wanted a second chrono trigger but it wont stand up to the first one, this game is so close to be perfect. it would be nice if they remaster this game on ps3 or xbox
Not only was this game the first RPG I ever saw played, but it was the first time I ever got emotionally invested in a video game storyline and the backstory of all the characters. Chrono Trigger had a huge impact on the way I viewed video games.
Omg i found my soulmate, you have put every single word i thought about this game in this video, thank you for making this game much popular, this master piece is underrated, and i didn't expect to has much views.... Also magus is the most valuable character in this game, unlike crono, eventhough i grieved when i beaten him once.btw finally i figured how to spell schala 's name, i used to spell it "skala ", plus her theme is my favorite as well,it kills my soul each time i hear it
This and FFVI were just the peak of RPGs, heck, maybe of gaming in general, and they came out almost at the same time too. I pray we SOMEDAY, get a pair of years like 1994 and 1995 were for RPGs and gaming in general.
I just now came across this video in a random search for "chrono trigger," a game I literally played, have been playing consistently over 20 years. You sir made me laugh, cry, even jump for joy while watching your review. You made me feel inclined to play it yet again! Also, considered yourself subscribed, good Sir!
Totally agree! After i finished 1st play through and look at the walkthrough, there still A LOT of things that i missed. Yeah...even you finish the story at first try, you only completed 1/4 of the game.
Jeremy, this may be my favourite video of yours. You just summed up every one of my feelings for Chrono Trigger in one video. I swear to God, this almost made me happy cry.
I remembered one of my favorite moments when the crew traveled back to a certain time in history where the land was a desert. Where our heroes was from, there was a beautiful forest is now a baron waste land. But the forest hadn't been grown yet so when it was time for our heroes to return home Robo chose to stay behind to build the forest. When our heroes finally reach their own timeline they saw how magnificent the forest was and that Robo had spent 100 of years building and growing the forest to what they know in the present. Robo chose to stay because he was the only one who can survive for a long time until our heroes return to their right time. They found him unfunctional and rusted. Beat up after many, many, years of hard labor, but Lucas was able to revived him after an overnight work and repairs. The story was just amazing. You don't get stories like that in an RGP games anymore.
Max Power what is this persona-thing everybody keeps talking about? i mean, i've seen some videos, but i dont get why this is seen as one of the best RPGS evaaaarrrrr
I have a whole new respect for you, Jeremy. I remember buying this on cartridge at a Media Play, during the Golden Age of SNES, it was like 65 bucks. I still love listening to the soundtrack on youtube. Thanks for reviewing!
One thing that makes me really nostalgic when I play Chrono Trigger is that all the artwork and character design was created by Akira Toriyama, the guy who created Dragon Ball. In fact, many characters in Chrono Trigger look like their Dragon Ball counterparts, like they're from an alternate universe: Crono looks like Goku, Marle looks like Bulma and Magus looks like Piccolo. Wouldn't it be awesome if the story of Chrono Trigger served as a sequel to Dragon Ball Z, an expansion of the universe. That would've been a lot cooler than Dragon Ball GT.
Chronno Trigger was the first game to make me realize that a video game can have the same narrative depth and complexity as a book. Of course, I was like 12, so it took me a few more years to find the words to say it that way.
Cross is the entire deconstruction of Trigger's plot. Chrono Trigger went with the entire premise of "you can change destiny". Cross continued that by saying " ...but that will have its own consequences, some very drastic. " CT was about " Saving humanity". Cross asked "is humanity worth saving?" CT was about defeating Lavos . CC was about "it's not the fight but how you fight ( heck one of the most unique end bosses , ever)". CT had the unique thing of multiple ending. CC actually made that relevant and had them be parallel dimensions, so you could actually relate with a world where dinosaurs continued to exist. Just the fact that it bravely tried to do something new rather than rehash the same thing speaks volumes of its efforts. Although I do criticize it using too many characters at the behest of development. (Why did they have to remove Guile's background of Magus??) The gameplay was made incredibly logical. The hand drawn art is gorgeous to look at. The story is worth playing the game million times over. And lastly, The SOUNDTRACK? the single greatest soundtrack in videogames EVER! CC is a poetic experience in itself. Though the Chrono series NEEDS a sequel. It needs the resolution to many questions that popped up in CC.
Damn, I remember playing Chrono Trigger on the ps1 when I was a kid and absolutely loving it. I always thought, for some reason, that it was one of those obscure games that nobody ever heard of and that I was one of the few people who had heard of it and played it. (I grew up in Brazil.) Coming to the US and (thanks to the internet) hearing how beloved this game is brings a smile to my face.
Want to know just how amazing Chrono Trigger is? I just spent £35 ($55) buying a twenty year old game and I feel ive just got a bargain. THATS how good Chrono Trigger is!
ildjhk? poasid Roms are cool, but for me personally I prefer the actual hardware. Roms are convenient when it's downloaded to my phone and I can play it at work during my lunch or break. so there's my 2¢
the first time I played Chrono Trigger, I knew i was in for a treat, The sound track is so kickass! The story, everything about this game was Amazing. Seeing this review makes me wanna replay that game after I finish Final Fantasy VII. Great Video. New sub
I have multiple copies of Chrono Trigger. The game is just so good. But as much as I love it, I love Chrono Cross so much more. There's just something about "character collector" games like CC and the Suikoden series that I really love.
Tbh you need to make up a a super rare rating for games and movies beyond Awesometacular. There is a reason they never made another Chrono Trigger after Chrono Cross. They realized recapturing the magic of the first one was near impossible. All the stars aligned for CT. It was the 16 bit era at is peak and most refined. The reason many feel the 16 bit era was superior for RPGs was because of sprite based graphics allowed you to envision, imagine and roleplay the details beyond what the tech was capable. Today they animate everything, every detail, voice every inflection. I remember the day I played FF7 and I was like WTF HAPPENED? A few years ago with Dragon Age and Skyrim I realized the tech is coming around to the point where it isn't some uncanny valley of blocky bodies with moon faced looking freaks. It allows me personally at least to focus on other aspects of the role playing experience. Giving my characters a back story and motivations for the choices they make and things they do in game.
Jeremy you came right on time my friend I just watched your FF6 review a few days ago and since you said it was just as good as Chrono Trigger I went looking for a review of it today when I found yours that had just been uploaded out of the blue!
I have to ask: When playing Chrono Trigger, did you unlock all of the different endings you can get? There are 15, depending on when in the story you fight Lavos.
Love that game one of the reasons why I go back and play super nintendo games. But you should try Terranigma, one of most underrated snes rpg. The story is amazing and your choices can help shape towns, it also has a great soundtrack along with a lot of feels throughout the game
Yeah! I agree terranigma is WOAH awesome as well. However chronotrigger is definetively better....ALTHOUGH terranigma has a really surprising plot twist or two.
psychedelicpiper Seiken densetsu 3 is good and the fact that you can play several different storylines, one for each character is AWESOME. But I like the original secret of mana's story better....OH! And I was forgetting about Lufia rise of the sinistrals, yet another awesome one.
Best Birthday for me was when I got Chrono Trigger from my dad, and Final Fantasy VI from my mom. These two games made me the well adjusted adult I am today. Dude, there was once this rumor (I think it might have been in my country only) where if you didn't get Magus, you could have Spekkio in his place, good God I spent months chasing after that. Digging every corner of the game for secret rooms and treasures and stuff.
The music for Zeal is so amazing. I have so many memories playing this game, all the multiple endings and the new game +. I would get up early in the mornings before school and try to get through new areas and just have it on pause until I got back from school.
wanted to try chrono cross to bad is not and psn europe. same goes for chrono trigger but at least i can use a simple gba emulator for that. FF ix is indead good. Have suikoden 2 but just barely started on suikoden 1 witch seems really good. Wanted to try breath of fire 4. Skyblazer , dont ring any bells, can`t recall thati heard of it but i will give it a shot ( is it on nintendo eshop)? some of my favourite games is if you wonder persona 3 fes, persona 4 golden , final fantasy 8-10, mgs 3, resident evil 4, shadow of the collosus, kingdom hears 2, planescape torment and deus ex. Perhaps Silent hill 2 too , despite i hate scare games, but that story was so good. Perhaps even kotor, fallout 2 and morrowind+ fe : awekning. Have to replay ff vi tough, and chrono trigger yet to complete but is been so far very good.
Haha I can definitely see why some people wouldn't like them and I really wasn't expecting Jeremy to like them either, but I still think it would be fun to hear him talk about them. For me FF XIII, FF XIII-2, and Lightning Returns are the worst.
psychedelicpiper VII was awesome. XII was pretty sweet, though Vaan/Panello were lame. XIII was good, especially once it becomes open, but Vanilla and Chocolate pissed me off. XIII-2 was almost as good. VIII was good except for the DRAW engine: the most repetitive/boring thing in FF history, but I and II were far less entertaining as games, but I understand they were good for their time. I tried X-2 before X, which I am playing right now (towards the end), and I'd say that X is definitely top 5, but X-2 was, at the time for me, the worst. I got about 60% done but couldn't continue that chore. I loathed every character and villain. "Dullwings?" Lame. LAME! Never played others aside from Tactics Advance, but I heard IX was good, and we know that XV will be the shit.
Chrono Trigger will always have a special place in my heart. It is the very first RPG I have ever played and nothing ever reached that feeling afterwards. Frog's theme will always play in my head when something awe inspiring is happening.
Jeremy I wanted to point out, Magus "dies" in his first attempt to kill Lavos and it wasn't until you come in and interrupt his attempt to summon Lavos that everyone is sent back in time through the wormholes. Also another amazing plot point I wish you mentioned with the foreshadowing of Janus telling Chrono that the black wing blows and one of his party would die, like that shit in a SNES game was amazing.
I agree with Jeremy, this game is possible the greatest game ever made, the music was awesome,, the battle system is so badass and how you can mix the spells, I loved the spell where the frog and the robot and the main character, with you do a Triple spell attack with a huge frog landing on the enemies...and you really do care about the characters, I really thought I was only one who felt like you didn't want to hurt there feelings. and I did use Magus to kill "lavos" ….bt I think the story line is truly one of the best storyline in a game....if I was to hit the lottery. I would ask there the creators if I can use there story line, if this game was to cost all my lottery money. I would will do it, b/c I believe in it, and I know a lot of people would tell me, don't risk it, and people are not going to watch it, bt I will do it anyways....I will actually follow the story, maybe a little parts of changing it and we must have good actors and actress to play these parts. to maybe a have spinoff the character...….I don't understand why hasn't been made this move...if there was a brand new studio, and your facing very successful studios....and you want to put your studio on the map, this is the story line....you can even make a franchise.
I was 15 when it came out, and i still love it as much as i did back then... it's one of my favorite games of all time. Whenever i hear pieces of its soundtrack i tear up... all those fond memories.
I have to agree with you. I love both Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI (my 2 favourite RPGs of all time), and it is incredibly difficult to choose between them. But having played them both multiple times, and both fairly recently, I have to say that I would side with Chrono Trigger. That game, from start to finish, is a master-class in video game design. And that fact that it was a collaboration between Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yuji Horii made it all the sweeter.
Matthew Henry Why are you blaming your age? I am a 2000's kid as well and I have amassed an alright SNES, NES, PS2, Wii, and 360 collection (including SoM) with my own money over the span of 2 years. It isn't a trouble at all. I'm still collecting actually; you just have to be patient.
Let me rephrase this Why do I have to be an opressed 2000's kid in a mildly poor family of paranoid computer geeks who refuse to allow me to have one of their old computers they don't use anymore? XD
Matthew Henry It's still really easy to play. Just get an emulator for your phone or computer or whatever and play it on an that. The hardware requirements are nonexistant and it's really really easy to find the roms. SNES9X and Emuparadise are 2 things worth googling.
I guess the thing with Marle would be a paradox, if she disappears and Chrono wouldn´t meet her, he wouldn´t travel through time with her, which wouldn´t mean people wouldn´t think she was the queen, which makes her come back in the present!
I just always think of that scene from Austin Powers 2 when this happens ("Oh I've gone cross-eyed"). And this is definitely not the only moment in the Chrono Trigger/Cross story where you can absolutely bend your mind around this kind of stuff.
I love this game. One of my absolute favorites. Edit: I noticed you pronounced the names the same way I do, awesome. Also, I feel you did a good job for the time constriction. 10 minutes really isn't enough to do it justice, but you did good with what you had.
Chrono Trigger excels in every single aspect you could think of: gameplay, level design, spritework, characters, replay value, pacing, progession, music, polishing, plot, artstyle, fun. Everything! Chrono Trigger is not only a timeless masterpiece that can stand with gems from the modern era but also THE greatest JRPG ever made and also one of the grestest videogames in general, period.
To my dying day, I will NEVER understand why dual and triple techs didn't just automatically become the standard for all RPGs after Chrono Trigger's release.
Word!
It's funny how most of the things in Chrono Trigger didn't become standard for games. Especially Cross in general which tried to apply so much logic to gameplay. People just.... I dunno :|, don't want creativity?
+Floyd Palmer ironically, Sonic Chronicles: the Dark Brotherhood has similar moves...
...aaaaaand the game sucks
+Federico Porcel It would seem only Digital Devil Saga can do it correctly.
+Floyd Palmer those techs is cool, but if you build the Crono-Magus-Ayla Fomation then you will realize that total dame of their final skill is way bigger than the triple techs of some other fomation :|
I did not realize Jeremy Jahns reviewed Chrono Trigger.... Or games in general!
Ngl, I was quite surprised to see this video too lmao
Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever made.
I'm only half way through playing it so I can't disagree with you, but they say that about every rpg ever made
Perhaps the best game ever made
not just the best rpg but also the best game ever made
@@chrizbie i havent heard that for mystic quest
Nier Automata is
Ugh, dang it, I had to pause the video so I could go buy Chrono Trigger.
lol did you really bud?? XD! Did you really? I was a kid when I played this game, and for him to mention it as the greatest RPG game is AWESOME!
Hi Ris, your videos are great.
is that a lets play i smell?
Best gaming decision of your life though :3
Hey ris! I didint know you watch jeremy's videos! Im subscribe to both of you!
Square Enix will most likely never touch this series again. Because they KNOW they will never be able to top it. We'd burn them at the stake if they tried. The first one was made by the DREAM TEAM for Christ's sake. It's beyond current SE's talent.

ya,that honnor goes to ff6 XD.
There are some remixes of the songs that are A.W.E.S.O.M.E!!!!
ocremix.org/game/16/chrono-trigger-snes
Magus and frog's theme are super awesome! ocremix.org/remix/OCR01377
I'm partial to Ayla's theme myself, as well as Chrono's theme, Lucca's theme... you know what? Let's just save time and say the entire soundtrack is friggin' awesome.
I was born in 84 and play it once a year. It's just part of culture at this point.
You forgot the artstyle Jeremy. it's Akira friggin Toriyama sensei who did the character design etc.
Hell to the yeah it is!
I wonder why this was never turned into an anime. Could have maybe even crossed over into Dragon Ball. Very wishful thinking, but still a nice thought :)
@@ThisHandleSystemCanGetNicked man I would sell a kidney to see a Chrono Trigger anime
Dragonball+Back to the future+Final Fantasy 6= Chrono Trigger
But if i have to chose between FF6 or CT I say.......Yes.
BEST GAME EVER MADE!
Eh, I see FF6, Mass Effect 2, Xenoblade Chronicles, MGS3, etc are much better.
Gackt4awesome Thats true, lets say chronno Cross wasnt also a good game either.
DigitalBerserk Do you mean "Was also a good game"?
Can we talk for a sec about how amazing the Super Nintendo is?
Mario Allstars+World and World 2
Donkey Kong Country Trilogy
Kirby Allstars
Super Star Wars Trilogy
Star Fox
Super Metroid
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Final Fantasy III/VI
Chrono Trigger
Killer Instinct
Mortal Kombat pack
Street Fighter II and its versions
Jesus Christ what a console. Probably my favorite one to this day.
don't forget Secret of Mana saga, Super Mario Kart & Super Mario RPG, and Megaman series.
Could you imagine this game with Final Fantasy XV graphics? Holy hell, the dual and triple techs man!
Well it does seem like FFXV is gonna have at least dual techs so...your wish is half-granted!
Got a link?
That would be sweet
+Starcraftgamer97 You sound like someone who's judgement is easily blocked by nostalgia. I know it's hard but keep trying to get over that hump.
I always loved the mysterious sound that came when you tried to open the black boxes.
One of the few RPGs that advertised multiple endings AND ACTUALLY HAD MULTIPLE ENDINGS.
I can think of another rpg that does exactly that. It also has megalovania.
Almost finished with the game. All I have to do now is defeat Lavos.
I'm pretty nervous.
Take lots of elixirs if you are under lvled
KAKAROTOPS worth it
believe me, when i was kid, im scared to jump to 1999 AD
youre not the only one lol
BRACE FOR THE BAD ENDING
But...the future...re-
I loved those little quests that added to Marle, Lucca, and Robo's stories, when the main plot gradually stopped focusing on them.
It's Zeal's theme, "Corridor of time"
This was worth reading. That's super neat man, should play the game then.
I've already started!
Gotta love it when it all comes together!
Hey, it's all thanks to you!
CeeeX Do play Chrono Cross too after it. it is flawed but when it connects all the things in CT, it just goes 'BOOOOOM MIND BLOWN'. Also , the dead sea is the single most beautiful thing you'll ever see in a game :).
ff6 is the ony game that can stand next to chrono trigger imo.
Add Super Metroid and I agree.
Agreed, my handsome friend :P
Indeed, beautifull bastard 😎.
Pffffft... of course you would say that Kefka. (Although I agree with you)
The only jrpg i know of that really comes close to CT is Golden Sun, ff6 is good but nah
Funny fact Janus(magus) cat follows Magus around when you have magus in your party :P
His "cat", not dog.
its a cat lol
Matthew Woodrum You gotta be kidding me..This whole time i thought it was a dog...
Lol
Funny Fact : Magus' shadow appears in Chrono Cross when you read a letter from Lucca that says 'Janus might be looking after you right this second' . Actually its a pretty creepy fact .-.
Personally, I think Chrono Trigger has one of the best soundtracks a videogame has ever had to date.
Chrono Trigger is the best RPG game ever made. Possibly the best game ever made.
Apart from FF6, yes.
Apart from mother 3, true.
No dual techs = not the best game. Sorry
@@bachelorsensei9437 That’s your opinion.
@@issacharezechias2209 Not to me.
Anyone ever notice the fact that Marle is using FIRE on the title shot? Took me awhile to notice.
+reyco1987 That was awkward for me to understand, but I had noticed automatically. A mistake that was never caught perhaps?
reyco1987 I attributed it to being concept art before gameplay elements were cemented and she was given Ice powers.
In my opinion, Chrono Trigger is better than Final Fantasy 6 which I also believe is the best Final Fantasy there is.
+DrSy P. just slightly better though
Seriously, words can't describe how much of a masterpiece this game is.
I just played it for the first time recently on the ds and I have to say Chrono Trigger certainly holds up for a game that would come out today, not mentioning it's a few months from its 10th anniversary.
20th*
Whoops, thanks for the correction.
Oh, someone else already said it. I was gonna say, my parents played it when I was only a few years old, don't tell me it's only hitting its 10th, lol. Happy 20, CT!
Magical Trevor funny how a 20 year old game still feels so fresh and innovative. Same with Cross lol.
Er... o.o what did you think were those things you were finding in chests and shops? X)
Classic. I bought this again on psp, ds, and I have the rom for my phone
KAKAROTOPS I know, but this was the first RPG game I layed my hands on, so I didn't knew how to equip weapons, pendants, armor etc etc..
Edgar Lopez It doesnt have a tutorial for equiping right? its funny, I find most of the tutorials of games now days to be quite annoying and obnoxious. I think a good game requires no tutorial, and teaches you to play trough intuitive level design.I'm not saying chronotrigger had that tho X) frankly I dont remember.
chrono thrigger was the first game that introduced me to the awesomeness of genre called "RPG"
and yes i faced the same dfficulty i dont know such things about equipping weapons or buying stuffs. good ol' memory
Jeremy, are you by any chance a fan of Dragon Ball?
I have never chosen to kill Magus with Frog
I remember I bought this game when it came out because I liked the art, but it definitely changed my life. THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER
what Jeremy said about this game is true. this game was also the game that made me love RPGS. a game that you can always replay and still enjoy this game. chrono trigger is better than most games today, if not all of them. people wanted a second chrono trigger but it wont stand up to the first one, this game is so close to be perfect. it would be nice if they remaster this game on ps3 or xbox
I love Chrono Trigger! I played it on super nintendo growing up it's the best RPG game ever! You make me want to play it now!!
Also magus is the most valuable character in this game, unlike crono, eventhough i grieved when i beaten him once.btw finally i figured how to spell schala 's name, i used to spell it "skala ", plus her theme is my favorite as well,it kills my soul each time i hear it
+Jun Kazama - He pretty much summed up the awesomeness of that game.
I finally named "Frog" Glenn right from the start. I felt like a genius.
How about naming "Marle" "Nadia" from the start?
This and FFVI were just the peak of RPGs, heck, maybe of gaming in general, and they came out almost at the same time too. I pray we SOMEDAY, get a pair of years like 1994 and 1995 were for RPGs and gaming in general.
I just now came across this video in a random search for "chrono trigger," a game I literally played, have been playing consistently over 20 years. You sir made me laugh, cry, even jump for joy while watching your review. You made me feel inclined to play it yet again! Also, considered yourself subscribed, good Sir!
Didn't the creator of Dragon Ball work on this? The cover's artwork looks very similar to his artwork for Dragon Ball.
+Black Manta yup Akira Toriyama designed those characters
Cool.
+Bane Knightfall (as far as I know) He worked on the Anime style cut-scenes of the DS and PSOne version
Yup, Akira Toriyama was part of the Dream Team.
Totally agree! After i finished 1st play through and look at the walkthrough, there still A LOT of things that i missed. Yeah...even you finish the story at first try, you only completed 1/4 of the game.
I just noticed something. Chrono is a Super Saiyan God...
Jeremy, this may be my favourite video of yours. You just summed up every one of my feelings for Chrono Trigger in one video. I swear to God, this almost made me happy cry.
Wait... there's actually people that dislike chrono trigger?
101 people?!?!
damn haters...
Jeremy, you need to play Persona 4. Right up there with Chrono Trigger
YES!!! I can't believe Persona 4 isn't as well known as it should be.
Max Power what is this persona-thing everybody keeps talking about? i mean, i've seen some videos, but i dont get why this is seen as one of the best RPGS evaaaarrrrr
Max Power Persona 4 is the most well known game in the entire Megami Tensei franchise though :/
gruthakhul100
You basically fight with the power of friendship. (It's an actual mechanic in the game).
You get stronger by bonding with people.
Max Power ...okay, thanks
SSSHHHHH....we don't speak of Gt
Frieza x Flea
Chrono looks a lot like Tapion. Are they the same character?
Frog is Vegeta and Ayla's fiancé is teen Gohan
This game kicked ass in the 90s and it still does.
I'm with you on this: Chrono Trigger wins by a hair for me over Final Fantasy 6. I love them both, but.. 25 endings? You can't beat that.
Kisaragi Mitsukai One BIG RED SPIKY hair...
Chronno Trigger was the first game to make me realize that a video game can have the same narrative depth and complexity as a book. Of course, I was like 12, so it took me a few more years to find the words to say it that way.
I like Chrono Cross as well
pretty underrated gem
it is a misunderstood masterpiece and a fitting entry to the Chrono title.
I actually like Cross more than Trigger. :)
Same here. Loved chrono cross way more than chrono trigger
Cross is the entire deconstruction of Trigger's plot.
Chrono Trigger went with the entire premise of "you can change destiny". Cross continued that by saying " ...but that will have its own consequences, some very drastic. "
CT was about " Saving humanity". Cross asked "is humanity worth saving?"
CT was about defeating Lavos .
(Why did they have to remove Guile's background of Magus??)
The gameplay was made incredibly logical.
I've been waiting for 20 years for you to review this game. Its about damn time!
Bring Chrono Trigger to the Switch
Damn, I remember playing Chrono Trigger on the ps1 when I was a kid and absolutely loving it. I always thought, for some reason, that it was one of those obscure games that nobody ever heard of and that I was one of the few people who had heard of it and played it. (I grew up in Brazil.)
Coming to the US and (thanks to the internet) hearing how beloved this game is brings a smile to my face.
Want to know just how amazing Chrono Trigger is? I just spent £35 ($55) buying a twenty year old game and I feel ive just got a bargain. THATS how good Chrono Trigger is!
Please support the official release.
ildjhk? poasid Roms are cool, but for me personally I prefer the actual hardware.
The music was still good in Chrono Cross. I really liked the story, and liked the connections the story had to Chrono Trigger.
Best song in the game, hands down, was Magical Dreamers, the song Nikki plays at Marbule. I freaking love it.
Suikoden 2 is still my favorite game of all time. Gameplay, characters, music and story are so damn good. Also, Luca Blight....phew..
How many copies do you own?
Well, I used to own it on SNES a long time ago, but currently I've got it on DS, plus the version that came with FFIV in the FF Chronicles disc.
Of all the retro games you could have possibly reviewed, thank you for reviewing this masterpiece.
Glad that Jeremy also loves Magus, that magnificent bastard!
Don't forget "Seiken Densetsu 3", alternatively known as "Secret of Mana 2".
psychedelicpiper Seiken densetsu 3 is good and the fact that you can play several different storylines, one for each character is AWESOME. But I like the original secret of mana's story better....OH! And I was forgetting about Lufia rise of the sinistrals, yet another awesome one.
KAKAROTOPS I wish there was a better translation for "Secret of Mana". Ted Woolsey had to cut down a lot of dialogue.
You should try Tales of Phantasia, although the fan translated version (the only english version) is a bit mature at times.
The music, man the music. I want that shit playing when Im dying. Just for the extra drama
The music for Zeal is so amazing. I have so many memories playing this game, all the multiple endings and the new game +. I would get up early in the mornings before school and try to get through new areas and just have it on pause until I got back from school.
Thumbs up in honor to Akira Toriyama!!!!
Guru: Please support the offical RELEASE!!
last i checked, dude was still alive...
Marcos Danilo who said he was dead?
Axel Reigns lol his post sounded like he did..
Marcos Danilo He said "in honor of Akira Toriyama", not "in memory of Akira Toriyama" lol
Easily one of the most emotive and evocative games I have played.
The story, the characters, the music, the battles.
A true gem from an epoch past.
Chrono trigger and FF6 best games in history! Respect for loving both! Undecided on whats better but it doesnt even matter! Both were so epic!
End of 2022 beat it 1st time...
New favorite RPG of all time.
It's up there with FF7 & chrono cross.
Oh man, now I have to go and play this game for the billionth time lol.
I cannot agree with this more. Greatest....Game......Ever. I've been playing this since '95 and my last playthrough was in 2018.
My best games ever are:chrono trigger,final fantasy 6,chrono cross.final fantasy 9,suikoden 2,breath of fire 4 and skyblazer.
If someone actually cares.
+Denis Stoica thank you for the titles, im going to try them
Ignacio Ureta Glad that I helped.
wanted to try chrono cross to bad is not and psn europe. same goes for chrono trigger but at least i can use a simple gba emulator for that.
Tord L Breath on fire 4 was released at the ps1 and sky blazer isn't on Nintendo eshop.
Just finished Chrono trigger for the first time and this video summed up all of my feelings! Thanks so much for reviewing this
You should review some of the other Final Fantasy Games. I would be really interested in hearing your opinion on FFX and FFX-2
Oh and Kingdom Hearts as well
Sorry, but in my opinion, those are two of the worst Final Fantasy games in existence.
Haha I can definitely see why some people wouldn't like them and I really wasn't expecting Jeremy to like them either, but I still think it would be fun to hear him talk about them. For me FF XIII, FF XIII-2, and Lightning Returns are the worst.
Laura Mayott Well, the Final Fantasy series certainly got worse progressively. The newest ones are the worst, I agree with you there.
psychedelicpiper
VII was awesome.
Chrono Trigger
Double Techs: 50+
Triple Techs: 9
Chrono Cross
Double and Triple techs combined: 11
Square...what the fuck?
Talibanana it's my main complaint for chrono cross... they should have cut the character count in half
HOLY SHIT , AVENGERS 2 TEASER TRAILER JUST CAME OUT! REVIEW THAT JEREMY FOR THE SAKE OF MY UNBORN CHILD!
IT MUST BE DONE!!!!
The first time I played it, I thought this was going to be a save the princess game. But oh man, the story gets even darker than that. 🤯
all chrono trigger music was done by ONE guy too!
Face similarities~
Chrono - Goku
Marle - Chichi
Lucca - Bulma
Ayla - Android 18
Magus - Vegeta
Jeremy you totally nailed my own childhood and experience and oppinion with Chrono Trigger and FFVI with your review. Awesometacular :D
When he said Magus the coolest.... I started to believe him
I was 15 when it came out, and i still love it as much as i did back then... it's one of my favorite games of all time. Whenever i hear pieces of its soundtrack i tear up... all those fond memories.
Why do all the character models look like they were stolen straight from Dragon Ball ?
Akira Toriyama did the character designs for both
Because Akira Toriyama, the maker of Dragonball also did the artwork for this game (as well as pretty much if not all of the Dragon Quest series)
Because Akira Toriyama, the creator of DragonBall, was the character designer for this game.
because the artist that drew the characters for dbz also drew the characters for chrono trigger and dragon quest.
Justin Kane Lol sorry didn't know that.
Deeeewwwwwd! Review Earthbound now! You already knocked 2/3 of the SNES JRPG greats out, just one more left!
I consider Secret of Mana more of a classic SNES RPG than Earthbound.
And I still need to get both games-
Ugh, the troubles of being a 2000's kid
Matthew Henry Why are you blaming your age? I am a 2000's kid as well and I have amassed an alright SNES, NES, PS2, Wii, and 360 collection (including SoM) with my own money over the span of 2 years. It isn't a trouble at all. I'm still collecting actually; you just have to be patient.
Let me rephrase this
Why do I have to be an opressed 2000's kid in a mildly poor family of paranoid computer geeks who refuse to allow me to have one of their old computers they don't use anymore?
Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever. Anyone arguing otherwise is a fool.
fthis1234567 I'm not arguing. Many people like the older games because of either its mechanics OR its story. Chrono Trigger, it seems, has BOTH.
keep dreaming fool.
fthis1234567 Final Fantasy 6 says hello. :)
I'd like to throw Knights of the Old Republic out there.
Final Fantasy and KOTOR don't even come close to capturing the timeless essence that Chrono Trigger nailed.
Its really nice to see you review things you're passionate about do more!
Xenoblade Chronicles next maybe?
YES!
I love this game. One of my absolute favorites.
Edit: I noticed you pronounced the names the same way I do, awesome. Also, I feel you did a good job for the time constriction. 10 minutes really isn't enough to do it justice, but you did good with what you had.
Final Fantasy X Review Next Please !
seriously just bought this game at NY comic con 2014, your timing is impeccable, i havent beaten it yet so il get back to your video once i have
Tag me when you comment about it! it would be nice to read the opinion of someone who never played it before.
JEREMY! AGE OF ULTRON TRAILER! NOW
YEAH!!!! REVIEW THAT SHIT!!!!
