Empedocles was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher and scientist who lived in Sicily in the fifth century BC. He is best known for his theory of the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) and two forces (love and strife) which he believed governed the universe. Empedocles was also an important figure in ancient Greek medicine and is credited with discovering the principle of vision and the concept of blood circulation. He was considered a mystical philosopher and was admired by later philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Empedocles was also known for his poetry, which combined philosophical ideas with religious and mythical themes.
