@rs_garage_us would love to hear your perspective on Justin Jordan going 6.87 with a power glide in his mustang 5-6 years ago. How’d he keep the engine alive?
@@mr2chet527 It's been done a zillion times. I don't say it can't be done. I say it's hard on the engine. The engine wants to accelerate. The smaller the engine the more it has to work to accelerate with limited gearing. For decades the PG was the trans of choice for many of us, live and learn. Thanks~ Jay
Jay is a very interesting to listen to. His knowledge is fantastic. I agree with what he thinks about the older generation of guys racing out in the salt lakes. It’d be a dream job working and learning with Jay.
I love these podcast with these very knowledgeable guys bc over the years I’ll get this idea that this will work or that will work or something won’t work bc of this and this and I’ll tell some pretty well known tuners and they’ll act like I’m stupid or some of my friends that are much older than me that have been racing for a long time and they’ll say that’s not how it works but these podcast keep brining up the same topic I’ve been saying and solidifying what I’ve been saying for years
My first time watching your podcast. You absolutely hit it out of the park getting Jay to talk that long! I love the content and I’m 8 years older than Jay.
I can relate about what he was saying. Jay was saying about being able to look at things while you're running that 4-second pass. I've been in a few situations in my life when things happen. It's like it was picture frame. Perfect 6 seconds. I can remember each frame of time that happened, especially if you getting into slippery situation
Interesting take on a PG. funny thing is, a 2spd 400 powers most of the fastest cars around and uses a similar gear split as a built PG. once you figure out using a dump valve and proper converters you don’t really need all the gears. Hell I’m going pretty quick with a bone stock 2jzge with a PG. been low 5s already (3 month build) and I think with cams and valve springs it’ll go in the 4s. Not so sure it’ll go any faster with more gears. Might try a 3spd 400 to verify
He's talking about gearing! Powerglide has long gearing since it is a 2 speed trans vs all other transmission that have 3 + gears. And guess what? The stress/load on the engine / rotating mass of the drivetrain in general is HIGHER ! Jay is a top mechanic and one of the best tuners out by there!
I am over here yelling at my radio Supra vs. Busa 2005 hayday!!!! Man i miss those days! 850 to the wheels ina supra hooked so good on a 17 nitto back then and would take down so many cars!!!
Not having a dig at Jay, I have run T400 before love them and i'm doing a ZF 8HP behind a 580-hp small block ATM, but I always have a grin when 6 cylinder guys tell you powerglides are nuggets on the street, the first thing i ask them is have you ever driven a 408 LS with a tvs 2650 on pump making 1000hp in a 2800 pound car with a Powerglide, the answer is NO. But the PG is a pretty cheap option that works on the street even with a stock 1.76;1 gear set. Just letting people know that if you have a big cube v8 with a 2650 as a street car you will be impressed on how well the PG works on the street. just don't get rid of your built glide just to go to a T400 the short first gear 2.48;1 ratio is a pain on the street in a light car. Not even mentioning the amount of people getting ripped on 1000hp built T400 that are nothing but built stockers with a valve body and braking shit real quick and these are well known transmission builders too. Just my experience so far guys.
@@gohardpodcast Cheers I enjoyed the pod cast, The other point you guys hit on was the amount of knowledge available out there allows a 25 year old to run so fast, where when i was in my early 20's early 2000's, I was learning the hard way a lot of money and time with turbo charging of my small block burning up engines until i worked out all the weak links. The funny thing is the old school guys would laugh at me for trying to run such a big turbo GT42 telling me it won't work. And the biggest problem was the old school camshaft designs, as soon as i went to big aspirated cam shafts I started getting somewhere. Look forward to your next podcast all the best for the new year.

The conversations about transmissions and innovation are so disconnected from reality. Why would anyone run a power glide and not an air shifted liberty? It's probably cause a glide is 5k instead of 15-20k(extreme t with s converter or your dumping money to a manual clutch if you go that direction) . People fall into similar build is because many people don't have the time and money to try wacky setups, and if it doesn't work to start all over again.
