You can't declare war on a country and your army can only be used to defend the nation If becoming an empire takes too long just try to become as big as possible in the time you play.
This is very easy using the intrigue life path. You swear fealty to a ruler one step bigger than you, seize throne to get a claim, kidnap him and press your claim through a faction.

@@TGirrJB If they are married, which is highly likely, the child will be of their dynasty. If they are unmarried then the child is born a bastard, and if it works like CK2 that starts a new dynasty.
To point out, pretty sure factions are also suppose to incorporate a dynamic vassal limit, like you can only rule so many vassals that hate you and aren't intimidated, you got to manage them somehow, you can reduce faction power by pushing vassals off to dukes and kings.
I played as the Duke up in the Normandy region in 867 and I ended up having half my land taken and given to East Francia when they beat West Francia in a war. The Karolingian claims are super aggressive
I know you wanna make some videos about CK3 now but after this, could you make one in 1941 scenario of Endsieg Mod with Germany? I just tried so many times (regular, everybody strengthened completely) but never defeated the soviets. My divisions just start disbanding when getting to November/December. Furthest I got was (Kiev, Kola Peninsula,) Leningrad, Sevastopol, Moscow and I was close to Stalingrad. Just some things I found out: 1. get to Smolensk, then you can take focus Operation Typhon which grants attack/defence bonuses, 2. get from Kiev south to Crimea to encircle a lot Soviets at Odessa, 3. don't capture Krasnodar before 1. Oct 1941 because you can't take focus Fall Blau with it (grants attack/defence bonuses as well). Would be very amazing if you'd show how to crush them!

Oh God, I've tried doing exactly that multiple times. I can never get it to a point where things are stable; one way or another it always falls apart before I truly get things organized to last. Seriously challenging, but never to the point of being frustrating.
Try and conquer the overall territory of what the pre split roman empire had on the Mediterranean at least, and maybe push up to Britain and take more than just England and Wales! It would take a while, but it's a crazily fun idea!
I don't know if WF can help you as Mercia/Wessex, but France really helped me out playing as England, I married my son or daughter to them straight away, they then delayed Norway while I dealt with the Normans and then we finished off Norway together. I guess thats the best way to do it.
Should also try playing as Abyssinia. I found getting an Alliance with the Byzantines to be the best option so that when you inevitably get swamped with wars those thicc roman stacks can just roam around your territory death blobbing everything.

it's so hard forming the HRE with E. Frankia, Lotharingia, W. Frankia and Bavaria as de jure because you have to hold all the territory for it to be integrated to the empire when you form it. If your character dies, you're fucked
could you do the consecrate bloodline (I think that's what it's called?) route? Where you get the character to be beautiful, herculean and a genius and then make that major decision? x
