Dave, thank you for the more detailed shop tour. It's nice to see the planer making chips for you too!
Also, you appear to have lost a lot of weight -- I hope that any weight loss was on purpose and not due to a health issue!

Even though I've been watching for years, the shop walk through was delightful showing me all my favorites and reminding me of particular episodes covering different things in detail. Thanks a lot, Dave. It was really valuable to me. Also, I've been waiting for a minute to see the plane running on a job like this. Quite satisfying.

I just love watching those old machines at work, from a day when jobs were done right and how long it took didnt matter, they may be slow compared to modern tools, but there is a kind of grace and beauty there that modern tools dont share.I have a 4" hand shaper, and though its a lot more work its way more satisfying than running a part through a mill.

Just what I needed to close out the weekend! As always, thanks for sharing Dave!!
I love watching that planer work. The shop I worked in had a couple Haas VF10s for larger work and then some big floor style boring mills to machine weldments. Shapers and planers are so unique and fun to watch since my only experience has been rotating cutters!
Also, I'd love to hear more about that steam powered car thing at the very end of the video!!

It is so good to see you again and thanks for a great video. BUT - You didn't show the whole shop and I for one would love to see it. Including the upstairs. I have seen those stairs behind you many times and always wanted to go up there and explore. Also I would love to see all around the outside of the shop and the neighborhood.

Thank You for the inspiring video and shop tour . It lit a fire under me to dig out the leather belt for my old Barber-Coleman surface grinder and get in running again after 40 years of idle . I have yet to date the machine itself -- I totally rebuilt it that 40 years ago since it had seen considerable use before I acquired it . No good excuses for it's idleness -- only that it went through several moves in the period between when I rebuilt it and now . Secondly, I too have one of those 3-jaw scroll chucks that you showed .... and near as I can tell identical to your's . It served me well for quite awhile in spite of having considerable wear before I got it .... that was about 50 years ago so it has to be much older than that . No identification as to who manufactured it . Thanks again for the video !

Great explanation of Bernoulli's principle of venturie effect used to fill the tank.

Your cross belt for your Barnes drill reminds me of when I was 8 or 9 and my father had just hooked up a well pump. The electric motor was turning it backwards so it couldn't pump water from a well. I showed my dad how to cross feed the v-belt to correct the direction of the power feed to the pump. He asked, "do you think that will work". I told my old man yes so he tried it and it worked. Many times I had to help him with simple things. He was a better carpenter than I but my mechanical ability was superior to his.

Until surface grinders were available both had their applications, planers not only in length but also on work surface widths.
Imagine a shaper's configuration able to provide an equal work surface area?

I'm totally amazed by your knowledge and skill! It's hard to comprehend how much work it takes to set up and maintain a shop like that! Very few people could do it today. I spent time in a line shaft shop as a kid and I don't think it ever set in to mind just what my grandpa had to do to build that shop. And his line was powered by electricity by the time I was around. I haven't seen his old shop for 30 years but I'd guess each machine has it's own power by now and most all of the machinery I knew is gone. But at least I can relive some of those days by watching you work. Thank you!

The way I remember it, you have injectors and ejectors. You have inductors and eductors. The jectors more gases, like steam and air. The ductors move liquid, usually water. So you use an eductor to "pump" out the chain locker. You use a steam jet air ejector to pull vacuum on the main condenser. On an old fire tube boiler, like yours, you use a slightly morphadyke rig to inject feedwater into the boiler, using your own saturated steam. I can not come up with a good example of an inductor, unless it would be your feedwater system. Sorry for all the steam ship lingo, I miss working on all that stuff. As always, thanks a million for making these wonderful videos for us to enjoy.
