Excellent film. I saw Gary Taylor perform 'The Genius of J M W Turner' in Edinburgh in 2002. Great actor.

We happened upon Gary today in Stratford upon Avon over mutual puzzlement over the amount of garages at a property for sale (long story). We had the most marvellous conversation with him and he imparted much sage advice on us. He pointed us towards this production as well as Room 88. We’ve watched both tonight and loved them.
Such impressive performances and all done in one shot. Such a treat. Thank you.

Today I met Gary by chance at a retail park in Leamington, he'd remarked about my Jaguar, a marque he professed to having always admired. He mentioned his being an actor and pointed me in the direction of this production. I must admit I had not heard of him, yet somehow he seemed vaguely familiar...
Coming upon this production I also had scant appreciation of the works of J MW Turner. I was soon hooked into this portrayal, it is superbly acted, directed, moving and praiseworthy.

I watched this a few years ago and have come back to watch it again. Utterly, utterly a fantastic production and astounding acting and direction. Note to Hollywood, stop doing all the crap films you have been doing for years and learn from this. This is how you make outstanding films that people will actually remember. My heartfelt appreciation and thanks to all involved. A moving and realistic representation that deserves a much wider audience.

As a teenage OD in the Andrew I was taken by Turner's paintings, without knowing anything about the artis. Now I've had the pleasure of seeing the longer "Mr Turner" as well as this short - and my interest in Turner, the person, is awakened. Thank you for posting.

I have watched this six times and I have to say that it is a little masterpiece!!! Gary Taylor is brilliant, in mood, manner and voice and a convincing painter as well. All the cast were great. The story weaves in beautifully with Turners known life,in a convincing manner.Every thing feels so right about this!!! I have not seen Mike Leigh's larger canvas yet,I'm almost frightened to.This is the highest praise that I can give this.
    Bravo!!!

Beautifully done, Turner has been my hero since the first day I saw his work at The Frick....there's very little I've not read and seen of his worldwide...we all had to make the pilgrimage to London, Petworth House, the V&A...Tate...
This was a Masterpiece in so many respects, Turners painting process was well researched...Bravo.

I will definately be sharing this with my peers at Curtin University as a study. This is brilliant. Thank you for showing us what the life an artist is like. I can totally relate to Mr Turner where nothing else matters but the paint and the canvas and the voice that drives you to go go go until......YES..... That familiar set at the end, where he is finally finished. I can relate to this wholeheartedly. What an inspiration.

Thank you very much, this is one of our oldest shorts which doesn't get huge amounts of views, but we're still very proud of it.
Although it appears to be one continuous shot, we couldn't logistically film it that way (mainly because we couldn't get all the actors together on the same day), so there are a couple of hidden cuts. We would rehearse it a few times until I had the camera work down and Gary knew what he was supposed to paint and when, and then cross our fingers and shoot it. It was fairly complex but a lot of fun to make.

The painting of the slave ship is pointing out the humanity of man. Abolition of slaves was soon to take place in England, though America kept it going for a while longer. Man is born into an age and that age is not perfect. It is a social comment on that event and history of that age.
