@@VintageOils Very true! I have a Sony ICF-J40, not a very well-known radio, but great sound and excellent on MW! Made in the 1980s. ruclips.net/video/oFmlQdglf7c/видео.htmlsi=eLcCCmjH4e0h2XZa

the icf 2001 is so bad on MW it os hard to put into words. my tecsun pl380 has better MW reception even though the ferrite antenna has a design flaw.
the mla30 help a lot with MW on the icf but the tecsun R9012 i.e. has better reception on its on little antenna than the icf on the mla30. real bummer about that radio

@@VintageOils That's quite interesting. On my ICF-J40 it is the other way round, MW is really excellent, 5 inch internal ferrite coil antenna. But shortwave is poor. Not bad, but not really great. Just strong signals come through.

@@swlistening they both might have in common, that they are not outstanding on FM :D in fact i think is never heard of a Sony radio that is outstanding on FM. but i am spoiled by the Degen which has better FM reception than a good dsp radio

Just subbed to your channel, didn't know that you have a couple of radio related vids! 📻👍🏼
Your copy is in a much better condition albeit in used form. The ICF-SW2001 which belonged to my dad was irreparable at the time as Sony Malaysia did not support the model as it was considered a JDM (Japanese Domestic Model) back then.
Radios that had an extended FM band (76-108 MHz) were banned in Malaysia in the early 80s. This was because Japanese FM stations used the frequency range from 76-87.9 MHz and I soon discovered that some local police stations were using FM (wide FM) frequencies below 88 MHz for trunk communications between certain headquarters, lol. I even had recorded some of their conversations on cassette! ☺️
Of course those days are long gone. The Royal Malaysian Police had since switched to UHF for their communications (possibly digital and/or encrypted, with frequency hopping) decades ago, therefore it's no longer illegal to possess a radio with FM band that is capable of tuning below 88 MHz. It's the Malaysian customs and excise department which vets what radios could be brought into the country at the borders and also at the airport cargo complex.
I think the AM thumbwheel serves as an attenuation control for overly strong MW stations. It didn't affect HF stations as I recall it.
The Sony ICF-SW2001 had issues like a AM front-end that is easily damaged by static electricity or overloading from long random wire anteenas and also ate through expensive C sized alkaline batteries. I remember it became too expensive to use run it on alkalines, while regular zinc manganese batteries lasted only a few days with heavy use.
This was a cool looking radio back in the day. Its telescopic aerial is quite long and it came with a nylon shoulder carrying strap. For a portable receiver of its size it's heavy, especially loaded with alkaline batteries.

My ICF-2001 still performs well with MW, FM, and SW - at least as well as my more modern radios. I live in a steel-frame high-rise, so reception can be challenging. My only issue is that memorized stations are often erased when switching bands. This isn't a huge problem since there are only six memories per band.

very true! i recently had my icf2001 and 7600d out in a somewhat noise free outdoor area. the icf-2001 certainly outperformed the 7600d. especially on MW and LW it was much better. i was receiving plenty of british station on those bands on a sunny afternoon in germany. must have to do with the 2001 using its telescopic antenna on MW and LW, which in return might be the cause for the super noisy MW and LW reception i have with this radio at home
