The work life balance is amazing! I have been on a 4 10 schedule for my entire apprenticeship so far. We work Monday-Thursday 6am-4pm. The 3 day weekends are great and it's nice always having holidays off and being able to take extra time off whenever I need to.

How was the pay for the first two years? I only ask because I do have a condo mortgage and trying to really think things through. I'm 46 and currently working, studying for the aptitude test, and saving as much as I possibly can so that if/when I'm accepted into apprentice program, the pay cut going in won't feel so extreme and I'll still be able to cover my living expenses without having to land a second job. I'm older, of course, but in a situation kind of like your brother was -- making a decent wage at my current job (I've been here 8 years!), but knowing this isn't really my ideal career, and that the pay cut I'll face upon entry into the IBEW is only a temporary hurdle. It will require sacrifices, like anything meaningful, but your channel (and John's) have convinced me that it's totally worth it! Thank you for all you do. It truly has been an inspiration and an invaluable resource. Glad Local 48 and Providence are treating you right. You've earned it!

That depends where you live. For example if you live in a City or Big City you might be able to get more work than living in an average size town.
Also the Weather affects a lot of labor jobs, they're put on Hold if it's raining, snowing, ect.
You can apply for Unemployment Benefits if you get laid off, you can also place yourself on a Ready To Work list.
I live in CA and we're currently getting affected by the weather, meaning labor jobs are still on Hold, ex Construction, farming (Field Work) where they're expecting Rainy days the following week or weeks.
      Hope this helps.
