Former Mayo footballer Alan Dillon grills Ryan Tubridy at RTÉ payments hearing

- During the Public Accounts Committee hearings over the RTÉ pay scandal, which has been running since late last month at the Oireachtas, Alan Dillon had a chance to ask some questions the public have been mulling over.
The Fine Gael TD, who won eight Connacht SFC titles and two All Stars in his 14-year Mayo football career, raised a number of valid points and was unsparing, on a couple of occasions, with Ryan Tubridy and his agent, Noel Kelly.
Dillon dug into the fact that some of Tubridy's salary payments from RTÉ were listed as 'consultancy fees' to Renault, for €75,000. He asked if Kelly colluded in a "falsehood of concealment" but the agent replied that "we had no beneift in seeking to suppress" any payments.
"I had no reason not to believe them [RTÉ]," Kelly added. "These invoices were as instructed." On a number of occasions, Kelly portrayed his company as "small" and trusting of the big broadcasting behemoth that is RTÉ. The exchange, in part, went like this:
DILLON: "You said you were following instructions."
KELLY: "Yes."
DILLON: "Therefore did you collude in RTE in a falsehood, a concealment?"
KELLY: "We had no benefit in seeking to suppress."
Noel Kelly stated, more than a few times, that his company was 'just following process' and that Tubridy was doing 'what he was instructed to do by RTÉ'.
One of the big issues of the payment imbroglio has been that the state broadcaster underwrote a guarantee that Tubridy would get paid this additional €75,000 for doing additional work for sponsors, such as Renault. When Renault pulled out of their deal, one year into a two-year agreement, it left RTÉ holding the bag and needing to cover that €75,000 cost to Tubridy.
Deputy Alan Dillon spoke clearly and forcibly on the fact that 'side deals' for additional money were being made, and not being clearly communicated to the public, when Ireland was in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Do you accept responsibility that your actions have been reckless in nature when dealing with RTÉ on this matter," he asked.
When Kelly said, 'No, I don't," Dillon responded.
"So you're trying to put the sole blame on RTÉ here in relation to this payment scandal?"
"Yes, completely," Kelly replied, before Dillon asked if it 'took two to tango'.
"We were just following process," Kelly said, again.
The Egos in RTE are astounding. The arrogance and deceit is disgusting , and the reality is they think they have done nothing wrong . The comment by Dave Fanning is a total insult to the Irish hardworking public . Another example of a man who has a conceited , protected income purse . Every day RTE never fails to disappoint

I agree, its a kangaroo court and why would Turbridy want to stay here after this. He is talented and able and professional. These sanctimonious politicians are the ones that have cost the tax payer 1.3 BILLION on the over runs of the children's hospital. That said, Turbridy and Kelly should have gone in, given their statements and left without been questioned because they were sadly never going to leave without losing.
Amazing how they manage, again and again, not to answer simple questions but go off, invariably, on a tangent.

Ryan Tubridy is saying he’s going to pay back money for work not done to an organisation he didn’t know was paying him that he billed for in an unorthodox way via a UK company he had never heard of through an invoice with no name and a wrong description sent via his agent’s second firm.”
When combined with the knowledge that Tubridy never corrected or questioned his publicly stated salary I think it would take incredible naivety to believe he wasn’t knowingly attempting to hide his salary from the public and from other employees. He had to be seen to take the paycut for public perception and colleague solidarity but also wanted to retain his earnings and this was the solution.
He should take responsibility for this and resign. Unfortunately it seems we’re passed that stage and he’ll have to be pushed by RTE which will no doubt lead to claims of victimhood and cancel culture.
This is the argument / statement that needs to be presented to the public. It’s so clearly and simply put.
Now we know who were the real people were milking R T E dry and once again R T E paid Them off Ryan was a Scapegoat Toy showmusical was a disaster. they nearly got away with. the cover up, there's more to come

the question is this - did you know when Renault pulled out and when they pulled out did you know that RTE was then making the payments - if yes then why did you not question this and why weren't the payments listed openly rather than hidden
This was good questioning. You can see Kelly was caught out. I don't like Fine Gael, but Dillon was impressive here
It's very strange and coincidence that Ryan Tub leaves the late night show just in time before this got exposed and he and his agent didn't have any knowledge about the massive extra payments on top of his pay 😂😂😂😂 and the ex DG was asked to face the committee she resigned and suddenly unwell to be questioning 😂😂😂 there should be absolutely zero members of the old RTE board to sit on the new RTE board of directors and managers.

That would be a legal question he may not have the answer to at the time.. giving it back might impart he'd done wrong when even the new head fo Rte said on paper that turbity had done nothing wrong!!

Have I gotten something wrong here. Tuburty said that he took a 500,000€ loss on his salary over the five year contract 2020-25 ie 20%. But then received a payment of 75,000€ one year from Renault and then the next year received 150,000€ both of which were on topos his reduced salary. Now I do believe that it is now 2023 which means that he is on the third year of his contract. He therefore has actually only lost 300,000€ but gained 225,000€ off the books but were RTE payments so in effect he lost 25,000 a year instead of the 100,000 he claimed he lost!! Am I lost here? Ask him for his tax returns for each of these years.

The reduction in salary was for his rte job. He is allowed and entitled to have any other work he wants. If his other work makes up for his reduction in salary- I'd say that was clever and makes sense. Am I missing something?
@@iamwaterproof You are, if Renault paid him for "other work" no problem. He told a blatant lie ...he said he took a 20% cut, he didn't. RTE are in trouble too if public money was paid thru an off-shore account to him.

Did Ryan take the 20% reduction but circumvented that by a dodgy payment. It's not believable. If he worked for Renault, they should have paid him. A Tipp TD had a similar problem some years ago but it wasn't public money,

All parties involved had settled into a very cosy way of going on with our taxpayers money, unchallenged for so long that they no longer appeared to have a moral component to their judgements. Now dragged into the sun, they struggle to explain their old Irish sleveen ways
The key information is that Tubridy and Kelly are saying is that they did not know that the Renault had pulled out of the deal and they "assumed" Renault were continuing to pay the €75,000 each year.

I don't have a problem with Tubridy getting paid a vast sum of money. Most of us would take it if we were in his shoes. The problem as i see it is the lack of originality in rte programmes. The Late Late show may have been current in the 80s but it's not now. Rte executives live in an echo chamber. And it's riddled with political connections. Just look at Liveline,apart from indignant callers and a superficial host, what tangeable benefit is it. But Rte will never change. In 30 years time it will be the exact same. Anyway, politicians may question the management but they can't control the output.
Yes, I saw a trend of having the same guests, mostly Irish, and I feel they weren't getting popular worldwide celebs in, which seemed a bit fishy, and I thought it was because they had no money and that.

I doubt it. The Mayo county board were so cash strapped/tight that they almost lost to London in 2011 because they took three flights to get there and had the team staying in Watford.

Allan Dillon was brilliant at questioning. Noel Kelly keep pointing the finger at RTE. With all that Ryan said about RTE why would he want to work for them. It beggars belief.

Hardly. No sane person is going to flippantly throw away the best, highest paying job they could ever get for their profession. He likes the job and the pay. Simple as that, really. Dee Forbes is already gone and management may change further. It's not like he was being abused at work and he'd have to face further mistreatment - realistically, he wouldn't have any further issues at all. Easy life.

I believe your right about contracts and to be made aware of a certain contract in the medical centre is alarming. Ie con also the fact known why would you want to peruse or harm a woman in this way. These doctors are mature enough to have enjoyed the years of happiness bringing up their own families. Enjoying and guiding them throughout the years and yet they organised such harm and broke my defences while doing so and not allowing and persistently interfering with my little personal and private life is simply unforgivable.
