I feel like a Marathon reboot done like an immersive sim like Prey 2017 would be a hell of a way to reintroduce the franchise. That said, Bungie appears to be focused on squeezing the GaaS turnip, and Marathon doesn't fit into that plan.
As a small child, I didn’t like this game, because I couldn’t figure out what buttons moved the character. So I’d just stand there and shoot the wall, and wait for monsters to walk up to me. My whole memory of this game is the start point of the first stage 😂
While everyone was getting all excited about DOOM and MYST, I was all about Marathon and Descent (oh man the LAN multiplayer is so good on Descent). I felt like DOOM was all on one flat level, even if they could trick sort of split-levels with ramps or elevators, you still knew it was all flat - while Marathon had a full on 3D feel (plus a much more interesting color palette), and a lot more interface actions/puzzles. Those rounding-a-corner jump-scares always got me pretty good too!
For mac users this was a blessing. Even as a kid I liked Marathon better than Doom, Quake, Duke Nuke em, etc. Those games were great in their own right and Quake's graphics were awesome but this game was special. I dunno it just felt cooler, the sci fi aspect and feeling like you are really on a space ship. Alot of text and story involved, it wasn't just mostly comedic gore.
Just completed this game myself, looking forward to the other two games in the trilogy. It’s pretty neat to see just how much of Marathon’s DNA carried over into Halo, and how groundbreaking this must’ve been for 1994!
I didn't know this but Steve Jobs showed the first trailer of Halo. Apparently Halo was suppose to be a Mac exclusive game but that obviously didn't happen LOL
I played this back when it came out on my Mac. The first and only for a while FPS for Mac. It was fun to play and I played this one, part 2 Durandal, and Infinity. This was Halo before Halo was Halo.
Been a fan of this trilogy for well over ten years now. As I type this, a big-ass Marathon poster hangs above my desk & I wear my Marathon t-shirt. Love it all, man. Cheers.
idk what it is about this game, but i really like the style and the music is perfect. im glad it was free on steam to get. idk what it is about theseprimitive retro 3d games but i love it, its like theres a creativity thats missing from a lot of games today
I first played Marathon in ‘96 on an old power mac, then again when they ported it to mobile. Even watched a few let’s plays. This is my first time seeing someone play Arrival, and (around 4:00) jump across the pit to get to the other side of the storage bay you see in the distance at the start of the game. Mind blown!!! Had no idea that part of the map even existed; I must’ve played it a couple dozen times. Cheers mate! Legend
I used to download every custom Marathon map I could find. I had no idea what I was doing; I just loved exploring the maps. Like all games, Marathon had a certain vibe that I still remember today. Am I wrong in thinking Marathon was one of the first internet multiplayer FPSs?
I remember playing this back in the late 90s and how the song of the first level had always reminded of the spice girls hit song of the time "2 becomes 1"
@maxmillson Yo. I was just recommended this video. This is honestly the most favourite FPS game when I was a child even until now(all of the games they made under the name). Neighbors back in the day had multiple macintoshes, their stepfather set up LAN with all of them in the basement. We played many of games but the best we've ever played then was marathons. And then now seeing that Bungie is bringing it back?? FUCKING AMAZING. They better not mess this up.. Thanks for the full video. I'll be watching bit by bit ever so often until the game comes out/with more information. Again, thanks 👍👍 I see it's just the first game but still. Good times
@@maxwillson The way the game feels is a little clumsy. Doom has more of a complete feel to it. Visually it is very careful about using multi-coloured textures. Most of the graphics are single colour with different values on top. A lot of these early shooters missed this critical concept: It has to read well
When Bungie's 30th Anniversary came to Destiny 2 and was full of references of those legacy games I went after each one of them. I am just amazed how much Bungie came along in terms of quality and scope of those games, each evolution is amazing. Thanks for the excellent video BTW.
@@maxwillson Yeah bungie just announced it. Check it out! Looter Shooter! Ive actually never played Marathon. Probably as im a 1998 baby and was raised with combat evolved. But your game play looks fun as i did play the old doom series. So cant wait to see your channel go from Old Marathon to new!
That's funny! Reminds me when I got my Game Cube and didn't realize I needed a memory card to save ahahaha! I started that Metroid game over so many times ahahaha
You just get different text if you save the bobs, it doesn't really matter. Instead of Leela saying you failed the mission, she says she gained valuable intel from the surviving BoB 's. But what that intel is who knows I didn't get any new weapons or anything when I replayed it trying to save the dumbass BoB's

Wow, this game featured friendly security drones that would actually shoot at your enemies? In 1994? Interesting.
