Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.
I have the largest Small Engine Repair Video Library on RUclips and the entire internet with over 1200 videos, just GOOGLE "DONYBOY73"!

Just hold on to the plug and then pull it over, if you regret doing it then you have good spark lol.
hey come over and make the video with me lol

@@donyboy73 that might be the funniest reply Ive seen on this site in the last decade and half 😆
I kinda already knew this but still enjoyed seeing you.Great to hear your voice Don.I hope you have a real nice day.
Another professional production Dony. You are so kind and helpful.
Good vid as usual. One additional point about checking for spark.
Not only could you set your saw, or any machine, on fire if the plug is over the hole when you turn the engine over, that spray of fuel could be strong and spray out far enough to set YOU on fire, and possibly cause serious injury to your face and eyes if you're closely looking for spark.
Happened to me once while working on a two cylinder a long time ago. Checked for spark with the plug safely off to the side of hole, or so I thought. Then rolled the engine over, the plug slid back over the hole and the engine became a flame thrower. Got it right in the face and eyes. All happened in a second. Luckily I just got singed, but that got my attention! Never take anything for granted.
Be careful and always wear eye protection. Ya never know.
Simple, but very important video! When diagnosing a "want start" problem.
Good info Don ,especially about a flooded engine. That would be bad... eric.
Thank you for taking the time to make the video...very educational and helpful
That is a wonderful tip on how to check for a spark and the precautions also. I have two chainsaws which is difficult to crank and the repairman in the shop cranked the saws, but once I got them home I had a hard time cranking both of them and just purchased a battery saw to use around home, but do need the other two for cutting down two dead trees in my yard and will have to try cranking both once more.
I got myself an battery operated saw a few years ago. Greenworks 80Volt. Great saw. My shoulder thanks me.
@@poochie49 I know that is right and I love my saw too.
Always to the point and very well explained. Thanks again.
Good stuff brother-man! I didnt know for sure if i needed a new spark plug but i did this test, and sure enough i did need a new one. Glad i found you bc you saved me a lot of time and would have even saved me a couple hours more if i found you sooner. I yanked the damn rope out of my chainsaw pulling it so hard, i had to replace the string, fuel, and spark plug. We are good to go now, but again i do appreciate your insight.
I love your videos Donny. Good information, technically correct, well presented, and the camera likes you. Thanks
Thanks Dony for the great advice, very helpful as always.
You could also grab some electronics solder, unroll some ten inches from the spool, wrap it tightly around the threads of the spark plug, then wrap it around any bolt, fin or other metal part of the cylinder head, then pull the starter. The plug wont be flopping around and you could use both of your hands to pull the machine over. Later you can wrap the tin solder back on its spool and reuse it later.
Hey Don, thanks for another dinks to buy for prep-collectors ;-) My Stihl 023 counts herself 31 this summer and doing quite OK. Problem with spark checking is with plastic cover around plug hole (no ground around)! I've solved that problem with SIMPLE GROUND WIRE (green-yellow) connecting common grounding point under starting cover. A hexagonal socket for the plug on the other end I have made from a galvanized strap, soldered nicely together. Spark plug can be checked now without any skin contact.= safety first, easy service - not least. BTW : After use the lead+hex ring can be easy hidden under the front cover without any problem!
From argentina i learn so much whit your videos congratulations doctor!!!
por nada
I made the mistake of being the conductor between the spark plug and the cylinder head once. Just once. Not gonna make that mistake again!
I will be prepping a RedMax trimmer later today or tomorrow; good refresher. Thanks.
Sir Thanks for the videos over the years. Be Safe and God Bless
ive been ZAPPED ...thanks don
Thanks again for sharing your small engine knowledge with us, I am learning and saving money with each video..😁
Hey Donyboy73 that's the ONLY time I have ever heard a Canadian say "ABOOT". Never EVER have heard a Canadian pronounce "about" as "Aboot". Just had to mention this.
Thank you for a simple short video on how to IN PRINCIPALLY check for a spark on a spark plug. Checking the spark plug is a different topic, checking and adjusting the spark device is a different video and not for 5 minutes. I think that DONY will be able to keep within 30 minutes. Look about snowblowers, there DONY talks about a lot (And where you can shove a credit card as well. :))), he never talked about it, because apparently thought that this is understandable. Have a great Day!!!
Awesome video again Dony! Great tips on where to hold the spark plug, but it doesn't hurt that bad when you do it by accident. Sometimes you just don't double-check where you're holding it before you pull it over :) Have a great day! Also maybe you should add Toro to your video description, but it doesn't really matter.
Very Nice refresher!
Excellent vidéo, very professional. Thanks. Yves
You should set the chain brake before starting the saw.
Very good tutorial.
Great resource love your channel
Thanks for sharing DonyBoy73. Chainsaws can be challenging. I have an older McCullough and it can be a bear to start at times so thanks again for sharing. Artie😊 looooog time follower
Thanks Don
Nice informative video Donny
Howdy Brother!
Good video thanks.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing. 🇨🇦😎
Great Tips!
The spark plug has a more difficult time sparking when the engine is under compression.
If you are not getting any, how do you determine whether it is a bad coil or if it’s bad points and condenser. I would like to convert my old Homelite Super EZ to an electronic module but need to know the coil is good before I do that?
Thanks for you help!
Wray from Ohio
Thankyou
You’re welcome 😊
I have an older homelite saw that dies at high rpm and can't pull itself through a log. It idles and revs well until you get to the very top. I think I could be the module
MS170 must be hot right now alot of videos on them from everyone even me!
Thanks donyboy 73
have a good weekend
You are wrong. I got a shock just watching you hold that plug. Fabulous tips. Thanks for the video's
I have a spark detector. If it lights up blue the spark is fine. If it is any other color or does not go all the way across the tester I replace the coil. Just remember, blue is good and red is dead and yellow in between, my tester has a round window with two test poles. Just plug it into the boot, attach the ground lead to a metal part of the saw and pull it over in low light. Usually, the window looks like a lightening bolt all the way across the window on a good coil. One of the first things I check is to see if the bayonet stake is still connected to the high tension lead. I take my Stihl carb adjustment screwdriver and insert it in the boot and use the tip of it to feel for it. It will feel like you are driving over a cordurary road because it is a wound piece of wire.
what tester do you have?
@@donyboy73 Donnie, I do not know. It has two test points with a glass window. Got it off eBay a few years ago. Most high energy coils will put blue lightning bolts all the way across the round glass window. It has a ground strap that you connect to the frame or the plug tip. I usually just connect it to the cylinder or bar nuts on my pro saws. I usually take the saw into my shop and turn off the lights. My eyes ain’t what they used to be.
@@donyboy73 don, I looked it up. They call it a 3 point tester. It was reasonably priced on eBay.
A few years back, my Ariens snow blower wouldn't run for more than 5 to 10 minutes. I checked the spark and it was good. I checked everything and ended up putting on a new carburetor and it still wouldn't stay running. I called Ariens and told them everything that I had done and they agreed that I had done everything they could think of. They asked if I had changed the spark plug and I said no but I had a good spark. They said what do you have to lose. I changed the spark plug and two years later it still runs like a champ. I guess that the spark plug wasn't putting out a hot enough spark and after a few minutes it just quit working. Very frustrating!
Good morning 👋. Great video 👍.
You are a good man 🤝. Have a great Day. 😺
have a good weekend, i imagine it must be getting cold for you
Yes, it IS. My brother and my Kids like watching your videos to 😉
Greetings from PEI on the east coast, what kind of spark can you expect to see if the spark is weak?
I got a 368 is Scott fire in the plug wire with test light you hook a plug up to it and it will not fire
Cheers
It will start if it's got all 4 of air, fuel, spark & compression & at the right time !
It's a 368 Husqvarna it's got a new coil on it the fires going through the coil wire that you hook a spark plug on it and it will not fire I didn't know if you knew what kind of a deal that was
I am mechanical technician for agriculture machinery but specialised in Stihl products and Robin Subaru products I am many video watch ???
Only your video likes
Ignition module= coil
I found the the best way to set coil gap is with a piece of printer paper
Hi donyboy73!! I tryid to check the spark once, but i couldnt see it, but when i started the saw it fired up good.
Bytheway, wich one would you say was the tougher race driver in open wheels,Jacques Villeneuve or Paul Tracy?
not sure lol
I have replaced lawn mower ignition coil before but I have never replaced chainsaw coil. Is chainsaw supposed to have strong spark as lawn mower spark? I am asking because I have seen weak spark in my lawn mower and replaced the coil.
Thanks
yes it should but you have to give the saw a good pull!
@@donyboy73 I gave many pulls but weak spark.
What if no spark at all. What’s next step. Thanks and God Bless.
I have a chainsaw, lost its spark. New plug, new coil from a local parts store. Still no spark. Checked wiring to cutoff switch with a multimeter, still no spark.. Diagnose that one. Saw was bought in April, used maybe 12 times. Proper gas mix..
I have the same problem
Not related to this video but do you know if a stihl easy start recoil would work on a stihl 194t

Hello Sir, didn't know where to post . I have a tecumseh hs50 67054 ser 4221b. Ask at shops, they had know idea. I was wondering, what would be the best replacement engine, without major adjustments? Any ideas, greatly appreciated

@@donyboy73 anything in Canada? Sorry, but if I buy out of the USA, it's going to cost as much, as the engine, to ship. And then ,time at the border,

Good Morning DB73 - can an automotive sparkplug tester work?. Is that a small engine spark tester you used?. Thank you👍
actually the one i used is sold for automotive
@@donyboy73 Thank you that's what I needed to Know !!. Happy thanks Giving Don.
May I ask what you use to edit your great videos, and is it hard to use the programme

@@donyboy73 Thank you Don
This is simple proces that evrybody can do it
Surely the test light used there only shows there's current going to the plug, not that the plug itself then makes a spark?
exactly, i explained that in video
@@donyboy73 Sorry, missed that
Torch brand spark plugs are horrid. If you buy equipment and it comes from the factory with a Torch plug, take it out, throw it in the garbage and install the equivalent NGK or even Champion.
exactly what i do
Ouch i.habe been there did that on a lawn mower not fun at all see you later young man
Now I am work in Oman
Spark I might chainsaw
Isn't it just as easy to stick your finger in the plug wire hole and pull the cord. 🥵
So I have a poulan pro 20 in and I've had a few issues since buying it new. 1. Leaks oil like it's free!!!! 2 . Was running fine yesterday but today I can't get it to start. I checked for spark and it's cold and in a dark shed even with a new plug and no spark so does that mean new ignition module? Or could the wire that plugs into the sparkplug end be bad and how would I know?
