    The Mirai is a complete fail because of that back seat. It makes no sense for someone to buy a large sedan to have back seat leg space that's equal to last 2 seats in a 7 seater SUV.

    The Mirai is beautiful outside, but impractical inside. I wouldn't feel save sitting next to that 10,000 psig hydrogen tank. I don't know why most cars today have a moon-roof, as they add a lot of weight, complexity, take away from headroom, and offer a potential for leaks. There are hydrogen stations near me, but fueling costs is very high and I don't know how dependable they are.

    The train has left the train station on Fuel cell Evs. BEVs have taken over partly because of cheap and predictable home charging convenience and relatively zero maintenance. Hydrogen production economics doesn't add up unless using cheap natural gas which is antithetical to the decarbonization of the planet and hydrogen is highly flammable. @@martinjackson909 The point of electric is that they're pretty good at speed, safety, tech, the convenience of home charging, and there are enough charging stations now to drive practically anywhere in the country-which can't be said for hydrogen.

    • @MylesV
      @MylesV 2 года назад

      @@martinjackson909 There are plenty of charging stations, but it's even better to just charge at home for normal driving. I don't understand why anyone would buy a hydrogen passenger car. It is not green as hydrogen is made from natural gas reformation, a major green gas emitter. It is an expensive fuel to store and transport. There is no fueling infrastructure outside of California, and fuel shortages plague availability in California. If you don't care about being green, keep driving your ICE. If you want to be green, EVs can be charged at home or at a growing network of fast chargers across the country at a cost far lower than hydrogen.

    3 problems need to be solved before these cars can be more than niche. Day to day running costs, the efficiency of the car from solar panel to tire (about 1/3 the efficiency of a BEV), and the fact that at least 90% of hydrogen out there is derived from fossil fuels. So, an expensive fossil fuel guzzling car that costs 3x as much to operate is a heck of a math problem...

      Green hydrogen is difficult to achieve at this time, and most is generated from natural gas. It’s also more expensive than oil and electricity, and uses more power to generate than is usable.
      Regarding lithium mining, it has much less of an environmental impact than does drilling for and burning oil. Also, used batteries can be recycled, whereas gas and oil can’t.

    I own a 2017 Mirai and for all the hate the first gen gets, there is nothing the first gen does wrong, it's just the second gen does everything better. However the prices of the first gen are really great right now I got mine back in March, CPO from Toyota fully warranted until 2028, with only 35,000 miles, and the 3 year/15,000 mile gas card for only $8,500.

    I owned the 2021 Mirai XLE and then switched to the 2021 Hyundai Nexo. The Mirai drives smoother, quieter, and feels more luxurious...Lexus like. I switched to the Hyundai because I have children so the rear passenger space is essential. The driver assist tech is better in the Nexo. Overall practicality goes to the Nexo. The hydrogen fueling on the other hand is just getting worse with it going up from $16/kg to now $36/kg while reliability of the stations don't appear to be getting better but more unpredictable. Neither car has any resale value do to fueling issues. Ask anyone that has owned a hydrogen car and the answer is always the same, love the cars but hate the fueling.

      The packaging efficiency of the drivetrain is nothing special. Both of these are packaged much like an ordinary hybrid, with a duel cell stack where the engine would be. The stacks are getting smaller all the time, enough so that they could base the Mirai off an existing model.

    Then BEVs will have home charging for most trips. Battery Swap in under 3 mins. where its available. And old fashioned DCFC in an emergency to get home or to the next battery swapping station,
    Go tell NIO and Gleey who both are starting to offer battery swapping outside of China. To bring it to the USA sooner than later.
    BTW geek in me loves HFCVs. But it only exists "now" since its being massively subsidized and forced some automaker by governments mostly in Asia... And its in the wrong vehicles, it should be used in trucks... And its only relevant in Cali for the USA anyway... So its just eye candy for the rest of us... So have sending us the candy :)
