This is why I love Reno- the rich history, this film alone is worth living here- seeing the people, how they dressed, played, lived, stayed married forever. Im going to keep Reno great in my heart- and do my best to make Reno, NV great again. So the locales, officials, can once again say Welcome to romantic Reno, Nevada- to anyone who visits this truly peaceful, compassionate city.
I'm third generation living in or around Reno. I'd often heard about the way things were before and how much better it was in the old days. I don't remember the tossing of the ring or kissing the column, the marriage/divorce thing still stands though. It's a shame so many of those buildings aren't there anymore. Thanks for posting!
@H.O. thats not true for me, I have been around the world and keep coming back to Reno, Nevada. I guess I'm an outlier, anomaly, rarity...but than again I see your point, when I passaway in Reno ,NV, sadly nothing stays forever. The good old days are still with us, I believe if you look deep inside the people of Reno (the good souls), the parks - there dedicatiors ie. Richard W. Schoot motto- a man who cared more about the community than himself.
Funny, when I was once visiting Reno I was standing at that bridge looking down at the Truckee River and I saw a big black object going along the bottom. At first I thought it was some kind of strange huge fish, then I realized it was a person in full scuba gear. When I mentioned this to a passerby, he said that the scuba diver was looking for wedding rings that people throw off the bridge after their divorce. That's the first I heard of that custom.
This was really cool! I was on the bridge last week where the lady tosses the ring. Midweek, in March, it was really quiet downtown. I was surprised at the lack of people and cars. Really cool to stroll around on our trip then come home & find footage from so long ago in spots I had just enjoyed. Thanks for the upload!

Ah Reno, bittersweet memories of living by UNR and then Midtown, quaint, strange little city where I got my first vintage boots, could dance drunk until 5am and head down to Awful Awful to chow down on a massive greasy burger before walking up to the parking lot rooftop of El Dorado to smoke a blunt and get high while starting at the traffic on main, before staggering home on 11th st. Miss you sometimes Reno. =)
Loved Reno back years ago. My folks were married in the courthouse back in Feb. of 1941 and stayed married until their deaths in 1972 up in Virginia City. I was married in Virginia City in 1969 and divorced in the courthouse in Reno back in 1976. Lived in Reno until 1979.
My now husband and I moved here and married here in Reno Nevada. He's my first and hopefully only.Reno is okay but kinda boring.Hard to make friends due to all the stuckup people and homeless people here.
Back in the 70's some guy spent weeks with his scuba equipment looking for rings. He found only several cheap phony ones. I got married and divorced in Reno years later. Still happens. I but my ex didn't throw the ring I gave her in the Truckee River it cost me a months pay. That's what the jeweler told me I should at least spend if I "loved her". For sure I was stupid, indeed!
And the funny thing is the Washoe county courthouse steps in the building are still the same they haven't changed at all the street layouts the same doing thing that's changed are the buildings and the people have gotten shittier and the funny thing is I've actually found a few of those wedding rings I still have them to this day 😂
Should have kept the old history of Reno instead of tearing it down to build the ugly casinos it has now. Downtown is nothing but employ stores, ugly buildings, and homeless drug users.
Heard the narrator use the word : " Gay " a few times , back in the 1940s it was associated with being happy , but now it relates to state of being a very sad and bitter homosexual .
