Why didn't the EMPIRE use AT-TEs (and use the AT-AT instead)? | Star Wars Lore

- The Empire not only replaced the AT-TE, the trust walker which led the Republic through the Clone Wars, with the AT-AT, but straight up stopped using the All Terrain Tactical Enforcer all together. We'll discuss why on today's Star Wars Legends lore video!

I'm on Twitter chatting about Star Wars: twitter.com/eckhartsladder
The beautiful thumbnail art: www.artstation.com/artwork/GoEE4
The AT-AT was already testet anderen relativly refined the ISDs still were in testing
I'd still take a AT-TE over a AT-AT for urban operations maybe a little bit updated but you don't have to worry about being spotted by Pirates are Rebels before you get close to spot them and you don't have to worry about damaging infrastructure or getting stuck inside of infrastructure
*Attempt 324*
Do the Forerunners vs The Imperium of Man (Halo vs Warhammer 40k) please.
Can you explain why the empire did not use the nebula star destroyer or the endurance carrier like the new republic #askEck sorry I asked twice but I forgot the hashtagbon the first one
I have a question about if the way I would upgrade an AT-TE Walker tank is a good way. I would first make it higher off the ground by 3 to 5 feet then I would upgrade the armor so it covered the entire hull then I would upgrade the main cannon to a more powerful one and put it in a fully inclosed turret that the person in side of could exist down into the main hull but could get out the top if needed I would keep all 6 legs? Are these upgrades any good #ASKECK
AT-ATs have the high ground, duh.
Bullshit, the snowdpeeder had the actual highest high ground, this is why AT-AT always falls
Sadly, they couldn't truly grasp the true power of the high ground
AT-TE is able to 1v3 AT-ATs
The high ground is nice when it comes from a big hill or something, but on a vehicle it just translates to instability, vulnerability, and a higher center of gravity
almost high ground in some cases.
AT-AT = mechanical camel.
camels can be very mean, getting hit by their spit hurts. sometimes, it hurts a lot.
But they still go down if Arnold Schwarzenegger punches them in the face.

Oh that's neat, maybe they should've done the same for the gunner then.
The thing about AT-TEs they can be used to outflank an enemy force
@@simpleclonetrooper2740 with how slow they move I highly doubt that.
the AT-TE has lower profile and the AT-AT is huge
@@sassysauron2426 I know it's been a year but they where moved by modified gunships
@@AlexJames-br9im also there at least faster then the AtAt. We see in the clone wars tv show that the AtTe still move on there own for example on ryloth.
There's also the reason that it is much easier to repair and produce spare parts for more standardized crafts.
@@majgijoe Well, what you stated is pretty much implied in the OP's comment, and Eckhart'sLadder touched upon that same point at 4:37 of the video.
-It's over AT-AT, I have the high ground
-You underestimate my power, snowdpeeder
Don't try it

@@snnrfnficjnsnsamsmddkzopa Nope. At the Battle of Hoth, while the snowspeeders did score several kills, they still eventually fell to the AT-ATs.

Thank you for making this video! I did indeed consider the Tarkin Doctrine first and foremost, but that alone wouldn't have been enough of a reason to phase out such a versatile design; you explain the plausible reasons for this quite well :)
It's a shame the real answer is just, 'because they made the prequels after the fact'.
I want to know how those dinky legs with such pitiful movement can ever be considered "All-terrain". The legs hardly lift off the ground, a small boulder can trip it, and losing one leg is a death sentence. At least the AT-ST and AT-TE can actually have some degree of flexible legs and balance.
First of all the legs lift at least 5-7 meters off the ground, and also you could control how much you could lift the legs... AT-ATs are essentially "All Terrain" they never tripped over a boulder and never will because of their extremely powerful legs and feet that could climb on any slope.
AT-TEs are flexible enough to go from a horizontal walk to a vertical climb and vice versa.
It's basically like a mechanical beetle.
@@nirjhar4803 Despite what is said in the video the at-at is actually rather easy to tip over as any major blast/Catastrophic wind/other extreme natural conditions from the side could topple it as it has no actual side balance support like the AT-TE has with the 2 beetle legs on the side help stop it from being tipped over.
The AT-TE might be immobilized from the above but not toppled and destroyed like the AT-AT which if the AT-AT is toppled it will probably will be unusable if any of the crew survives its catastrophic fall distance.
@@Warcrafter4 actually, some years back a guy did the math, and an AT-AT on solid ground would need to be hit by something like a modern battle tank moving at the speed of sound, in order to tip the AT-AT over.
That thumbnail is epic as fk

#AskEck why didn’t the New Republic or Imperial Remnant use the Separatist Defoliator Tank from the Clone Wars against the Vong? Keep up the great work 👍
Probably because it would kill their own soldiers as well as the enemy
Indiana Jones I’m assuming they avoided it because of it’s separatist origin, both factions had a aversion to CIS ships, droids, equipment, ect. Because they did not want to be identified along with the CIS which was seen in a negative, un-Republic light.
I just realized I didn’t add “against the Vong”
Because Vong book's were published 10 years before TCW was released.
Bautista González good point
I think that the biggest reason for using AT-AT's instead of AT-Te's would be the AT-AT's thick armor. The AT-TE's could be taken out with one shot from a rocket launcher, and I'd think that a tank would be able to take one out fairly quickly. The AT-AT's were much less vulnerable, and would be cheaper in the long run because you wouldn't have to constantly replace them at the rate you did with AT-TE's.
Also, in Legends, the AT-Te's were still used by the Empire in a lesser role. They were used primarily in the Outer Rim.
The thick armour means nothing if you can be disabled with a cable.
Yes, but did the Empire know that A. You could destroy the AT-AT's using towing cables, and B. Did they know that an enemy would think to do that?
If the Empire never considered the strategic use of cables to trip the walkers before the Battle of Hoth, they would have viewed the AT-AT's as more difficult to fell.
Also, even with the design flaw, it's harder to destroy an AT-AT with tow cables than to destroy an AT-TE. With the cables, you have to be able to approach the AT-AT and circle it several times without being shot out of the sky. You can launch a rocket at an AT-TE from a distance, making it much more likely for an AT-TE to be destroyed than an AT-AT.
@@johnnyraymond429 but AT-TEs are piloted (driven?) By clones who have been shown to be able to shoot rockets out of the sky

Very AWESOME and INFORMATIVE Video My Friend! I always wondered about this!
Because empire strikes back was made before the ATTE
P77777777 if that would be the only reason they could have just put AT-ATs in Attack of the clones
Arvid Holmberg the At-At are terrible from a design standpoint. I’m pretty sure if the movies were made in order in which they occur ( lore-wise) with the story / lore being the same, they would’ve used the At-te designs instead
You must be fun at party’s
lol so true , why did the ATTE not show up in the Imperial ground forces ????? Because George Lucas had not made it up yet. In fact in a wired kind of reverse engineering you can say the ATTE owes its existence in relation to its overall design to the ATAT.
@@UKOGBN Same for the Arc-170 being a predecessor to the X-wing but clearly inspired by it in terms of design.

Almost light speed 😂😂
He can do the content run in 3 videos, even faster than the let's play falcon :DD
I'm starting to think he has a bunch of videos completed and the true purpose of the polls is for us to decide when a certain video is released.
The AT-AT was first fielded in the clone wars. I remembered seeing a comic with AT-AT's fighting on a bog-planet against human and droid forces. I think the Republic lost the battle too. This means that the Empire must have put the AT-AT and AT-TE side by side and found the AT-TE lacking.
Correct. The Battle of Jabiim to be exact. Basically the "Vietnam War" of the Clone Wars. The Clones weren't even fighting droids mostly, but instead a CIS aligned militia with funding from the CIS that was attempting to oust the Republic aligned government. The Republic suffered heavy causalities. Several Jedi were killed. Obi-Wan was presumed to be killed in action. The Republic eventually abandoned the planet with the help of Anakin and the name "Skywalker" was forever disgraced on Jabiim as a result. One of the comic strips mirrors the real life Fall of Saigon: vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/0/0e/SWREP58-FC.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150717023426
I remember hearing multiple different stories regarding the AT-AT's origin.
Rhsims actually, the Vietnam War of Star Wars is the Battle of Umbara.
@@draketurcotte4760 Battle of Jabiim predates Umbara in terms of canonicity and timeline.
@@-CrimsoN- Interesting they explored the Vietnam war before that episode. I do know that star wars space combat was based on World War 2 dog fights but I like how they make references to our wars.
It’s cuz the guy who was in charge of the empire’s ground forces said “AT-TEs ARE FULL OF WEAKNESSES, LETS USE WALKERS WITH SUPER LONG AND SKINNY LEGS INSTEAD! I mean, what could go wrong?
Bad experience with AT-ATs I take it?
With the long legs you have a greater field of fire. The atats been taken out by using their only weakness. To bad the empire was too stupid to send some mobile aaa with them lol
@@rock_it9771 It is worth pointing out that the commander of the ground forces has NOT been force choked by Vader as a result of the operation - even where the guy that caused the ground assault to be needed in the first place had been. Spartans Halo
Guardians Destiny
Pilots Titanfall
Republic Commandos Star Wars
Galactic Versus
What about Starcraft 2?
What about Starship Troopers stuff?
Halo vs Destiny could be a whole series, I've been thinking about suggesting that one when it's a little more topical, probably around E3
That's basically gonna biol down to SPARTANs vs Guardians, but IDK if you can really make Guardians representable without someone crying foul. The big issues with any character from a game with RPG elements is that they have no fixed loadout. SPARTANs and pilots have a fixed range of weapons they can pull from, but Guardians have dozens of weapons they can pull from.
But I suppose if you were to put a gun to my head and make me pick, I'd say Guardians. Functionally immortal gun-toting space wizards that can shoot sunlight, punch lightning, and throw black holes kind of breaks physics.
I think that Ghost should be ignored, and that pilots would be able to call in a Titanfall
The point about AT-TEs having stubby legs that limited fields of fire reminds me of my recent realization that the First Order's AT-M6 may not be as stupid as it seems. While it is ludicrously tall for a ground vehicle (which limits where it can be deployed and makes it a big target), it is apparently no longer a transport, but rather a siege weapon/artillery piece. When you remember that almost all Star Wars weapons are direct fire and cannot arc, being twelve stories in the air gives the AT-M6 a massive range that makes it extremely difficult to approach from the ground (as even if you attack from behind, it can see you miles away and turn around). Still seems very vulnerable to airstrikes, so it better be deployed with heavy air support or a big circle of anti-aircraft vehicles.
That isn't an advantage over the AT-TE because the main weapon on the Republic's tank is a mass driver, with physical projectiles affected by gravity.
The AT-M6 may not be as stupid as it looks, but the AT-AT is still stupid. Also if you want a siege craft just use a big kinetic gun or a flying platform.
@@scytheseven9173 Except that the mass driver is a coil gun with at least 2 km/s range and when it's moving that fast gravity isn't as much of an issue, especially when you can see them firing their mass drivers at core ships flying up into orbit and the rounds don't drop.
Michael Ramon ah.... how do you explain the artillery used in the clone wars?
@@jewosaurusrex1601 I said "almost all" Star Wars weapons cannot arc. I don't know how arcing artillery shots work or why they aren't used more frequently, but direct-fire blasters/turbolasers seem to be the standard for some reason, and the AT-M6 is a reasonable way to get extensive range with such a weapon.
every time I watch one of your vids and at the beginning the music plays with the intro I get such a good vibe

#AskEck , What is the process to canonize stories, ?I really want the comic where a clone who went MIA and helps Luke and some rebels get off a planet to be cannon , thanks
If I remember correctly, prototype AT-ATs were featured in the Clone Wars comic series during the Battle of Jabiim. While imposing, they were vulnerable to well placed bombs on their feet. This and other factors such as (I believe) light armor led to it being put on the backburner until after the Clone Wars.
As a big old star wars fan I came into this video like "It doens`t make sense to deploy AT-ATs instead of AT-TEs" but well you put down a good point I never considered! Good job mate, keep it up!
I got an AT-AT walker for my 9th birthday... I wonder if it would be worth anything today if I still had it? (I don't...my son played with it and broke it).

Logistics/maintenance and shift to counterinsurgency warfare is my lead theory on the retirement of the LAAT as well. Given their speed and maneuverability on what seems like a pretty light frame, I suspect the LAAT requires a constant stream of customized spare parts to keep functioning. The Lambda and its variants likely put a lot less stress on the airframe and can probably use civilian parts mass-produced for the galaxy's massive number of cargo and civilian transport ships, while also no longer needing a carrier to take them through hyperspace. The LAAT is indisputably better when you have to deploy under heavy fire, but it wasn't unreasonable for the Empire to expect that they would have space and air superiority 99.9% of the time. (They also retained the lighter "civilian"/police version of the LAAT for such situations, though those dropships don't look like they are vacuum-capable.

Yo great channel and I love it
It simplifies logistics due to, as you mentioned, not having to worry about where you put your specialized walkers for this exact scenario versus those other slightly different walkers. But also because it makes maintenance easier due to fewer different unique parts. It's easier to maintain ten AT-ATs than five AT-TEs and five AT-OTs.
As to why the Venators and other Republic warships stayed in service longer... they can transport themselves from system to system. With ground assets, the Empire would have to send ships to go pick them up, and then you run into the logistics issue again of maybe needing the correct drop-ship or whatever to transport them. So I'm guessing that in many cases the Empire just left them there or scrapped them locally.
The Doggo in the end always get me! 😂

"The AT-TE's stubby legs limited its field of fire" *shows picture that puts an AT-TE into scale as being at least 3x the height of a modern battle tank*
Also the main issue with the Tarkin Doctrine is that Tarkin didn't know how to properly execute an intimidation campaign... the most intimidating thing in the universe isn't something that just looks massive and aesthetically scary, it's something that you could reduce your entire sector to rubble without the commander have to even raise his voice. Which I guess the Star Destroyer supposedly could but you get the idea, something built to be brutally efficient at tearing your ass apart will always be more intimidating than a flying mountain carved into a spooky shape.

With this being all said and done, can we get the starweird video?
P.s. Nice video as usual
At the end eckhart you mention the At-He as a sussesor to the At-Te, at the end of the clone wars the At-At was also already in the prototype stage and was being field tested before order 66. Just thought I'd say that cause it seemed to be missed that it was already in development meaning it would have been used eventually.
The doggo at the end of this video tho😂🐶🤣
with regards to why the ships took longer to replace than the walkers, there's also the issue that large capital ships take a lot of time, money and resources to build and require an entire shipyard to build an individual ship, and then again an entire shipyard to decommission that single ship, whilst small vehicles like the republic walkers are cheaper and quicker to make and can be produced in standard factories. With how quick the republic was converted into the empire, capital ships cannot just be scrapped and new ones built overnight, whereas with properly equipped factories production lines of new walkers CAN be started overnight with old ones being taken apart easily.
Video idea - how did the Hutt clan gain their massive territory in the outer rim and how did they control it. Its importance is made clear in the clone wars film where both the Republic and CIS fight over the hyperspace land within the territory. Why didn't they just take them anyway? What did the Hutt clan have that could potentially stop either faction?
