Yeah but it was not something they bought. If you look into it, many people ended up receiving one without buying them. Just about every popular Twitch streamer, for instance. Whole thing is dumb because now there’s no way to know. Getting rid of all legacy checkmarks also defeats the purpose of the checkmarks having any value. What Elon _should_ have done was had 1) The price be higher than $8 (because that’s a very low point of entry), and 2) You should _actually_ have to verify your identity to get one… that’s the whole point of the checkmark… to prove who you are.

@@kudjo24 But it loses all value if anyone and everyone can buy one. The checkmark proved the person was who they said they are. If anyone can get it, what does it prove? Why bother? Again, like my other suggestion said- make it free, but then have a way that it verifies a person so you know they are who they say they are (even non-famous people-maybe it would keep people accountable for what they say online).
You may be too young but back in the day (2003) people used LiveJournal. At the bottom of the profile there were different statuses. The most coveted was “permanent” which was for people who’d signed up in the early days. I think it was ~2005 they offered it to people for a one time price of like $150. Very similar concept except you only paid it once instead of monthly.

Hasan annoys the hell out of me, somehow I stayed an H3 fan even after he got fat and started having terrible political/covid takes lol I found myself so aggravated 70% of the time for awhile there and almost stopped watching. Back when Frenemies started was the beginning of the end for me. That and the behind the scenes "crew" vids are no bueno for me. I find them nauseating..alas here i am admitting I still watch. Shame. Shame. Shame.

@@thesavage005 Yeah, but they didn’t pay for them. Any person who had over a certain number of followers (I think a million) who had a check before still has one now. Just about every popular Twitch streamer got a blue checkmark automatically.
