That is the one off-key moment in this entire movie for me. As the director, Brannagh should have had Denzel and Leonard play it in a much more muted fashion.
@@scottcarroll9201 Agreed. If there's any hope of either one seeming redeemable, I think you have to play them genuinely horrified by what (supposedly) happens to Hero. Here it comes off like Claudio is only upset about Benedick's challenge.
@@scottcarroll9201 Probably true. I understand that Branagh wanted a sudden and scary change in atmosphere, but it did make Claudio and the Duke look pretty bad.
@@oddish4352 It's actually even worse in the original script. Claudio and Don Pedro refuse to take Benedick seriously and taunt him by bringing up his feelings for Beatrice and reminding him of how he'll be "Benedick the Married Man." Benedick finally has enough and resigns from Don Pedro's company. Only after Benedick has left do they realize he was serious. Branagh cut out a lot of their joking to allow for a more forceful challenge.
I appreciate that Benedick didn't hold back! I see versions where he's much colder, and those work, but Kenneth's version actually putting hands on Claudio is effective!
Thing about Shakespeare is I both understand and don't understand what is being said at the same time. It's as if I have no clue what's actually going on yet I can still somehow follow the story.
Same here! I can’t read his books because I would never understand, but I love watching plays and movies based on his writings...I can follow them enough! Glad I’m not the only one!!
There’s so much to mine out of the prose, but the players convey everything you need to know to follow. After watching the play go back and read the play. Those hidden gems will start to show themselves.
I suggest getting the annotated versions of the plays!! They explain more of the colloquial sayings that common people at the time easily understood. The crazy thing about Shakespeare is the plays aren't for intelligent people. These plays aren't unaccessible because common people don't understand the complexity. No. Shakespeare is a basic bitch. And hella raunchy. The main conflict in this play is Hero is called out for being a slut because Claudio and the Prince saw Hero's maid and Son John's man fucking on the balcony role playing as Hero and Claudio. If you get the annotated version, there are all kinds of curses or sexual phrasing we'd be hard pressed to get away with now. Kenneth Branagh is really good at cutting out much of the redundancy in Shakespeare's plays too.
So many seem to forget that Shakespeare's stories WERE plays, that's why they are so hard to read and so much easier to interpret when watching. I keep telling my friends who are still in school, its a *visual medium* ffs 😩
Yeah, Claudio needed that.
That Claudio and the Prince are jocular within 5 minutes of learning of Hero's death....I would not have forgiven either.
