Polychronion - Epic Byzantine Music

An original composition by Farya Faraji. This is a re-upload of the original version I had posted two weeks ago, I wasn't satisfied with the result of it. Some of the mixing was off, and I had been adamant in stressing the second syllable of all the words to keep a steady rhythm to the chant, but I regretted the decision afterwards seeing as it stretched the natural intonations of Greek too far, as many of my subscribers had pointed out. This one respects the Byzantine convention of putting the musical stress on the word's phonetic stress accent much more than the first one, and some of the mixing problems are fixed.
Please note that this isn't actual Byzantine music, nor does it seek to be--it's modern "Epic" music which mixes a "film soundtrack" style with Modern Greek musical language and instruments to produce an image of Byzantine civilisation, not a reconstructive work; I'm not claiming any authenticity with this song beyond a general "vibe" of Byzantine music, as it's first and foremost an "epic" style song, and is not meant to be a legitimate polychronion or equivalent in authenticity to the actual ones in the Byzantine rite.
The Polychronion is an acclamation in the liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church. In the time of the Byzantine Empire, the acclamation was proclaimed on special occasions for the Emperor, and was derived from the Latin acclamation "Ad multos annos" (many years) used in the Roman Empire.
Lyrics in Greek:
Πολυχρόνιον ποιῆσαι, Κύριος ὁ Θεός
τὸν εὐσεβέστατον Βασιλέα ἡμῶν
Κύριε, φύλαττε αὐτὸν
εἰς πολλὰ ἔτη.
Polychronion poiēsai Kyrios o Theos
ton eusebestaton basilea ēmōn
Kyrie phylatte auton
eis polla etē.
Grant long life, O Lord God,
to our most pious king,
O Lord, preserve him,
unto many years.
Please note this isn't reconstructed historical music, it's modern folk music. The Epic Byzantine Music series is a musical project where I explore various sounds from the ethnomusicological ecosystem of modern traditional music, using sounds from modern folk traditions as they are today as a framing device for themes pertaining to the history of the Eastern Roman Empire.
I thought the first one was fine, but the fact that you went out of your way to change the song, altering the flow of the music just for the sake of historical accuracy is impressive and speaks volumes of your integrity and dedication to immersion. You've earned my respect.
Re-upload? That's fine you make great music! ❤
wait so its actually you singing in the chants?
My friend, this one sounds vastly better. I find semblance to genuine Orthodox chants in it. Your music would do the Romans proud.

Greetings from orthodox lebanon
Wow, you sound like a Greek orthodox monk! The effort you put in your work to give the vibe of many cultures is almost unbelievable!
Thanks alot! It’s really important for me to get the vibe of each culture right :)
I'm totally imagining this as either the opening titles, or end titles, of some Byzantine Epic film, right after the Emperor gets crowned at the end (gives me chills just thinking about it) or as the menu of an epic Byzantine-themed video game.
What a song! I can feel it! Also as a Greek i understand the language and...no words! A MASTERPIECE

As a Turk love the rhytym and instruments that are used . Absolutely it took me away to that age.
Love Greece
Song so fire it burned down the Arab fleet 🔥

Thank you for yet another masterpiece, Farya :) I absolutely love your Byzantine music! That's not to say that your other tracks are bad-they are just as incredible!-but your Byzantine tracks in particular speak to me on another level. Here's hoping you will keep making them :)
I love it!!! It sounds like a mix of byzantine and ancient Greek music
There is no "mix" between these two. The Byzantine music is the evolution of ancient Greek music. Same goes for modern Greek music where you can catch the byzantine style even in Skyladika.
@@user-pd7ld2tx9u "Byzantine" music is actually a mix between Syrian, Jewish, Greek and Perian melodies. In a sense, it is "Hellenistic". Music of the later Roman Empire of the eastern provinces.
Already loved the first one but this one is even better. Could vibe to Byzantion all day 😎
I liked the first version more to be honest, there was more rhytm to it but this is good as well.
The begging of this one is great! The first version is also good but it's always better to have a choice
I can’t stop listening to this!

This is truly epic. I found your music 100% randomly and recognised cause I downloaded a mod for Rome 2 which adds these tracks in the game. Wonderful 👍

One of my all time favorite Farya songs
I just found this channel and I'm so glad I did! I already listened to the whole byzantine playlist and I want more right now.
Thank you for good music! When I playing Medieval total war 2 for Byzantine for Aleksei Komnin and Konin's dynasty, I always listen your epic music on background.
If i was a film or serial director, I would call you as a composer.
Haha me too, I actually swapped my Medieval 2 music files with my Byzantine tracks so I can get that full immersion :p
@@faryafaraji wow can you upload these medieval 2 files, i would like to have these tracks too ..also thanks for creating this version of the polychronion i was looking for it for long time
@@wiseguygr Actually it's really is to swap the files yourself: just download my songs into mp3 files and then go into the Medieval 2 folder on your computer. You'll find a folder called "music" and then sub-folders for the campaign music, battle music, etc. So if you want this song as a battle song for example, literally just copy paste one of the names of the battle file songs, rename Polychronion with that name, then copy and paste it in the battle music folder. It'll replace the original song in the game, and will play in its stead :p
@@faryafaraji alright, thanks!
I am impressed with this new version. It feels better that it has more authentic accentuation even though the rhythm is different

This is Greek language 🇬🇷
They called it Romaeic during the Middle Ages, which means Roman. To the eastern Romans, "Hellenic" language was Attic Greek, while the vulgar Greek language was known as "Roman".

I really really love your music, it's very useful when I'm on the gym
Your music is magnificent
Твои произведения невероятно оригинальны и погружают в атмосферу разных этносов, круто!
Im even more infatuated with your music now
Much like a few others here I prefer your original version, and am happy that you've managed to find it again. I understand why you reuploaded it and respect your adherence to Greek/Byzantine singing tradition, but the new singing sounds too dissonant when put together with the instruments. They just don't _fit_ together, if you know what I mean.
Otherwise, mad respect to you and your work Farya. You're a very good composer/singer and I wish you all the best.
Maybe it's because I got used to the first version, but I like the first one more. Stil this is very good too
Your best one.
Guy.. I really enjoyed the original version; can we not have both?

Interesting, I'm hearing the intro of Galani Galaziani (Greek: Γαλανή γαλαζιανή) starting at 1:24.
You’re the first to notice! I always use real Greek melodies as a basis so the music is authentic, and this one was exactly Galani Galaziani :)
@@faryafaraji I listened to enough Greek songs to recognize that motif!
