API’s The Box summing mixer and recording console has been very popular at Sweetwater. Now The Box 2 continues that legacy, offering audio pros worldwide - from professional home recording studios to commercial production facilities - legendary API big-console sound in a compact package, along with expanded flexibility and options for the modern studio workflow. The updated Box console features eight input channels with mic preamp, line input, and highpass filter; eight 500 Series slots, and LED metering for each of its 24 summing channels. The Box 2 still provides the same comprehensive center section, monitoring, and rear-panel connectivity as its predecessor, as well as the popular 0dB bypass switch on each summing channel.

@Aloha Wahoo The Box has been out for 6 years now, API's not at fault for the cost during Covid, and for what you get it's priced quite cheap. API also had a full rack summing system years before SSL and AMS Neve were thinking about smaller summing units, so you can build an API summing system slowly just check the used market.
Hi I'm Mitch Gallagher and welcome back to today's episode of "Gear You Can't Afford"
It's cheaper than a year of college tuition!
😂 so true lol
Lol.. good one..lol
much true
such a wow!
lol
Love the death star console style design. straight up 70s sci fi 🤙🏼♥️
Yes! I'm pre-occupied with those utterly unique and quirky API knobs! So very cool...
You can tell it is cool because of his leather jacket.
🤣
selling the car, I'll take the bus
Take the mixbus. It's still got a good drive 😀
Did you still sell your car?
I was just looking at these on reverb this weekend, perfect timing.
I love my Box 1 mini console..... for anyone looking at a Box 2 buy with 100% confidence as they sound terrific with a very easy to build around workflow. Mitch also gave a fantastic overview of the Box. I bought my Box from Sweetwater and the service was outstanding.
Can you route the 500’s through the summing side easily?
@@adamstaysick You can run them into the 2 main bus via the PMG button giving you 20 channels for summing, or you could disengage the PMG button and then send those 500 channels via the insert to the pure summing channels, but that will reduce your channel count. I have my Box with an API 500 rack on the summing side inserts.
If i lived in the us this would be a no brainer, wouldn't have a car or hype clothes but I'd feature this in my home studio for sure
i love it when sweetwater gives me candy whenever i buy something from there website 😎🤟
Man that thing’s a monster. Must be 20 miles of wire in that thing.
Maybe less than we think... It is designed to be modular so there's modules and PCB slots...Using 500 modules would reduce wiring.
All analog consoles have wire, especially in the transformers. Are you concerned about wire? If so, why? This is how records are made. It's not the only way, but it's been this way for ages.
this looks really cool 😊
Beautiful, very informative, thank you Mitch! Kind regards, Alieu S.
I love it!
Wish we could have heard you mixing through the console !

API definitely took inventory of what most project studios actually want or have and jammed it all into one box (hence the name!).
So what if it doesn't have automation? Use the Daw, most computers are ridiculously fast nowawdays. Why waste automation on an external unit ?
Well because of the price. I would definitely put a chip in there to make it universal. Not to much to invest in. You already are spending 16k on a board. So why not automate it? Just makes sense to me
@@lifeizrealtv I'm sure that API would retrofit their automation into this desk if someone really wanted it.
a great walkthrough Mitch thanks. Next time can you give quick little examples of when and why you may use the features you describe. Other than that, I really appreciate how you took the time to go over the whole board section by section. Well done
While that would be nice, this is a level of hardware that is in the realm of “if you don’t know what it’s for, you don’t need it”
Nice !
I love it
16k USD
For all this is provided, I'm sure this is a bargain
My brokeass can't afford it tho 😂
You would think Neve would be able to do better considering this came out before their new console
Man, I don't understand Neve's console. No mic pre's?! Wow.
Nice.
Awesome. Outside my hobby budget though.
Like for that tune :)
If I had the money to buy it I would only wish that the most of the mixer is in line with the faders, horizontal, and only the 500 series and compressor section to be bulged out vertically. It seems too tall for a smaller mixer one would use in a home/project studio.
They say it’s the same pres you find on larger api consoles. Is it the same voltage?
MY BABY
Mitch knows how to sell !!
i definitely this tho...😑😑
Absolutely gorgeous, not so beautiful price tag though
16K USD and no masterbuss EQ ?? 😮
$16,000 and no 500 series modules in slots included, expect to spend another $5k or more for those. Yikes.
It’s a bargain for what is included
GREAR pricing
I'll trade you my car for it. If I have that thing, I won't need to go anywhere anyway
The Box, will you marry me?
Seling, selling...that's all...
You'll get all the hot chicks if you buy this. I like the air-head bimbos because they always think you're smart.
This is so expensive for something that doesn't really do anything. Overpriced. But still very cool stuff.
WHaT! nO SOuNdGOoDizER!?!?
LOL
ignorant.
It's actually very reasonably priced for what you get.... and it's 8 channels of API for tracking, 24 channels for mixing with a stereo comp for tracking or bus duties. It's a true mini-console with transformer balanced inserts on every channel, which means it can grow with your needs. It is portable and runs cool so no A/C is needed, meaning it uses little electricity. IMHO it's the best bank for the quality buck console around.... in fact you'll spend almost double for the SSL and AMS Neve equivalent, but you'll need A/C for both of those.
Yeah, initially I didn't think much of the Box. Nowadays, I definitely would love one!
this video didn't really help with how this equipment will help in the studio. should have spent more time in how it benefits connecting this unit into a current studio space. 2 aux sends is all we get? if you are recording a live track, the bassist, drummer, and vocalist/guitarist will need there own mix. this product doesn't facilitate the needs we have!
