    chris after watching you for 4 years i now have a ton of killer knives that are all different in their own way and i think they are great and my friends agree, i have loaned them out to guys going on a week end canoe trip to a 2 week wilderness canada canoe trip. when i was a young man i got a allowance of 2$ the first place i went was the army surplus store and i would spend most of it on knives, you can imagine the quality of my purchases but at least i had knives. i am 68 now and for some reason i cant get out of the becker mode i know you are a jesica guy but bk2 is my favorite of 15 beckers, any way thanks for guiding me to spend money on something worth while

    For me, custom knives costing more than $300 are Collectables and personally I wouldn’t use them... because there are too many under $200 that will last a lifetime and work better than fine! So I appreciate your input on less expensive knifes! It’s a personal thing!

  • @kennethspeed2019

    You're right personal preference is personal preference but I think it's interesting that you go back and forth between knife blades with a lot of sweep and straight bladed knives.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  7 лет назад

      +Kenneth Speed Variety is the spice of life. Besides...I review knives. If I only use my stuff all the time, straight knives feel weird. The next several knives I produce don't have the sweep. Those are mostly the JX line. The DX line will be different.

    Darn that Honey Badger is sweet. Chris, I hope you show us the knife with the new grip scales. The original scale look nice but always look to squared to me.

  • @Jason-jd1jv
    @Jason-jd1jv 7 лет назад

    I think what most people who bitch about your picks don't understand is that since everyone is built differently, not everyone will use a particular knife the same way. Blades you chose work well for you but might not necessarily work for someone else simply because their hand wouldn't offer the same grip as yours does. For me personally, I prefer a smaller knife. Many years ago I figured out that 90% of what I use a knife for is accomplished by maybe three inches of blade. Longer blades are basically a waste for me. If I need to baton, I use an axe, hatchet or machete. For almost all feather sticks, whittling, carving, notching for traps, or shaving bark, I never use more than 4 inches at the most. For that, I carry a two blade trapper (Also works well for food prep). You seem to prefer larger blades with more sweeping bellies and that works perfect for you. Is either of our personal preferences wrong? Hell no, just different strokes for different folks man. You've got some great blades there and they are to be admired for what they are... the right tool for the person doing the job. No one can pick what tools you prefer any more than you can pick theirs. Keep up the good work man.

    I think you represent a very specific group of prepper/buggers and your ideas are your own about stuff, thats what I like about your opinion. Gives me insight I otherwise would not have w/o you sharing things on the channel. • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  7 лет назад +1

      +Brett Steele If have to think about it. But I don't believe I have to leave mine out. I got into designing because I wanted certain things to make knives work better and got tired of waiting for someone else to do it.

    • @brettsteele7386
      @brettsteele7386 7 лет назад

      You are correct when it comes to your knives. I have never heard anything but good stuff about your designs. Sense your so good at designing knives I am curious about what you would consider a good knife. You know your stuff when it comes to knife design or the top names in knife making wouldn't make your knives. Maybe you could pick your top 5 that you did not design and say what is good about them and why they aren't as good as the Jessmuk or Jess-X or the Bushbat, JX3, JX6.and so on. Not many people out there in RUclips land think like you do when it comes to knives.

    Jessmuk is a great knife. But i have to say, and this is only my opinion, the Jess-X is revolutionary! There is literally not a GD thing I cannot do with that tool. And while it's not a bushcraft knife it is simply amazing. But that's just me! 👍🏻

    everyone is so different when it comes to blades. personally I am not a fan of fero rods on my knife sheths it just not Bushcraft Imho. the only knife I liked that you showed was that mora knock off. the other blades have way to much belly imho. I'm not putting down. your knives I am a fan of LT. It just goes to show how different everyone is. I like a 4 to 5 inch blade I prefer 01 or high carbon vs a super steel 3v and 1/8 or thinner blade. scandi is great but nothing wrong with a sabre grind with secondary bevel. my absolute favorite knife design is probably a adventure sworn mountaneer and if I had to go with only 1 tool I would probably pick matt grahms primitive Sequoia knife with the cave art on it.

  • @bobashmore6442

    In a way you did choose a knife for me, well you and Brian at SOP. It was by watching your recommendations that I chose it. You reviewed the SCHF16 and so did he, both of you favorably. I don't need a "survival knife" or a "one tool option" for EDC, I'm going to and from work mostly and opening boxes is the heaviest duty my EDC knife ever gets. I was looking for something small enough to fit in my pocket without showing but big and sturdy enough to actually use and... I do not like folders very much. The 16 fits the bill perfectly for me and I've liked it so much I bought another one just in case I lose the first one. On that note... Did you ever strip the coating off of it? You mentioned in your video that you were going to and I've been wondering how that went.

    Thank you. I put in a request for the Terava Puukko when it becomes available. Seems to be an upgrade from the Moras that I own. Will not be able to afford the first knife you showed. However, I understood the design upon first viewing. Will definitively acquire when I win the lottery. My favorites - 1. the underrated, virtually unknown Ontario TFI; 2. the discontinued ZT 0170; 3. the Fallkniven F!; 4. the modern incarnation of the old Ontario 499 in modern materials. Currently ordering a Scrapyard. I decided that I wanted a blade between 5 and under 6 inches. Bigger? I probably wouldn't carry it until after shtf. Smaller? Gives up performance. The F1, within the ugly factory sheath, fits perfectly into a businessman's front suit pants pocket! The TFI? An all around survival knife - good for the car. I gave one to my son to keep in his car as well. Have a few for shtf. Modern incarnation of the 499? I accept the testimony of the USAF survival instructor that he saw class after survival class/thousands of uses without the knife failing. Fairly easy to sharpen to a sharpness I desire. The rubberized top restraint can be sawed off with a hacksaw, making the knife more user friendly. It was designed to cut aircraft hulls and can be modified.

    It sort of surprises me, the comments below about these knives being too expensive/high-end. He even gives one straight up budget option & then explains why he's currently favoring the other four....but the other four aren't really high-end. The Dark Timber is maybe the highest end, & it's a mid-tech. I guess what I'm trying to say is, for those of you looking for less expensive options, stop it. Buy a bunch of custom knives & wear a different one every day, like a man....screw that electric bill.

    Is that Finnish knife you showed available from any source other than their website. The shipping is very reasonable to the US, but after my bank charges me a ridiculously huge fee for buying something in euros it won't really be a "budget" option for me anymore. I own a Morakniv LMF, so I know I like that blade shape and grind. If I can find a site that sells the jaakari puukko in US dollars I would consider buying one.

But some things just stand out from the Pack, like a 57 Chevy or Marilyn Monroe or The Beatles or...well, you catch my drift. Oh crap I just seen you can answer my question for me from looking at your knife sheath. Please see this Chris! lol Anyway I need to know what the search term is to find the screws/gromets that you used to attach the kydex to the leather part, any help would be greatly appreciated on this subject as I have been failing with what I currently have and need something heavier?

      Opinions change the more knives you use. My favorites have changed from production knives, and now my favorite is a custom I had made to my specs. It's always changing.

    Didn't know 1095, especially tops 1095, was considered an "iffy" steel these days....

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  7 лет назад +1

      +WallyMer06 Maybe you should look into it then. Think of all the "my knife broke batoning/chopping" threads on forums and groups. If it's a carbon steel, it's most often 1095. 1095 needs to be heat treated JUUUUST right. If it isn't, it just snaps or chips on knives that it shouldn't. Like when Tac barely started batoning a Ka-Bar Potbelly.
      When Schrade first started using it, the factory was clueless. My first testers were good. Then a while bunch of them came warped.
      When TOPS has a dud, it's usually "undercooked". It doesn't break, it bends.
      1095 can be great, but it's also the most likely to have hidden landmines in a batch of knives.
      It was only when I stopped basing it on my personal experience (a handful of individual knives) and stepped back and looked at the big picture across the internet that I could see the trend. Out of all the commonly used carbon steels in production blades, 1095 produces the most broken knives as I've seen it.

    • @WallyMerc06
      @WallyMerc06 7 лет назад

      Interesting. I'll definitely look more into it. Thank you for your insightful response on the matter.

      1095 Cro Van that Ka-Bar uses,has nothing to do with 1095 carbon steel.1095 Cro Van is a name that Ka-Bar came up with for marketing reasons,because people are more familiar to that name.1095 Cro Van,is actually a carbon steel with properties closer to O1 steel!
