Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006
    ----
It seems that "Creek Mary's Blood" came easily, too, as Tuomas wrote it in just one day, after which Emppu worked on the guitar parts by himself. The song features the most atmospheric acoustic guitar ever heard in Nightwish.
"Even when I was writing the song, I knew I had to have a real American Indian on it, no matter what it costs", Tuomas reflects. "I called the United States embassy in Finland, and they gave me some Internet addresses and told me there wasn't much they could do. I didn't find much of anything through those sites, so I decided to use the simplest way imaginable: I googled the words 'Native American musicians'. If I remember correctly, I instantly found three promising sites, the first one of which was (writers note: web address removed). I listened to the samples with his chanting and thought it sounded just perfect. I sent him an e-mail but didn't get any answer. After a month or so, Ewo e-mailed him again and got an answer the next day. John Two-Hawks was very interested from the beginning, but he wanted to hear the song first, so we sent him our previous album as well as the demo version of 'Creek Mary's Blood'."
The Native American musician was impressed by Tuomas' work. "Tuomas introduced his ideas to me and sent me the album 'Century Child', John Two-Hawks said in an interview with Timo Isoaho of Soundi. "I considered his offer, but I didn't want to get into anything without thoroughly knowing the details. So I read Nightwish's lyrics, and somehow I sensed a deep, spiritual message in them. I was able to understand Tuomas through his lyrics. Tuomas is a child of night; he loves the shadows, storms and working in solitude. I'm exactly the same. I want to emphasize that had their lyrics been different, I would not have worked with them", Two-Hawks continued. "Then i had a dream in which a forefather told me that this project is worth going for, and I was finally convinced. When I got the demo for 'Creek Mary's Blood', I just started flowing over with ideas. I also played the song for a 72-year-old Catholic priest, and he immediately fell in love with the song! Anyway, I began testing different flutes at home, and from a selection of twenty instruments, only three seemed to work for the song. Tuomas did have all kinds of ideas regarding me playing the song, but I secretly hoped he would let me influence it more than he'd initially planned."
"John really seemed to like the demo and said he was in", Tuomas continues. "I thought that as long as we were going to do this, we should do it properly. I didn't want to just send him the tapes, tell him to do what he wants and then send the tapes back. I wanted a more personal touch to the work, so I invited him to Finland. That way we could meet face-to-face and see how we got along. I wrote the text for the song in English, and John translated it into Lakota. In the beginning of March, we flew John to Finland for five days, and it turned out that we got along just great. It was stated in his rider that he must have three bottles of Mountain Dew per day - and I tell you, the guy drank a lot of Mountain Dew! The studio session took about three or four hours, and the rest of the time we just hung out and ate side pork sauce (a traditional Finnish food)."
John Two-Hakws later said in interviews that he felt a deep sense of musical brotherhood with Tuomas. The two agreed about almost everything in the studio, and, according to Two-Hawks, 'Creek Mary's Blood' turned out exactly as he had hoped.
Along with wolves and sushi, one of Tuomas' central interests is the culture and history of the North American Indian peoples. This interest, as well as the shared love for nature, brought the Finnish rocker and the Lakota musician together and created a bond between them. This bond actually grew so strong that Two-Hawks decided to give his friend a Lakota name in a shamanistic ritual.
"John suddenly said he wanted to give me an Indian name", Tuomas recalls. "He'd done it only two times for a white man, so it was a great honor. His forefather had told him in a dream that this person must receive a certain name because he is worthy of it. I was naturally immensely flattered. The naming ritual took place in the recording room of the C-studio at Finnvox, in the presence of John, me and my girlfriend at the time, because John told me she had to be there, too. I stood there wondering about my new name and was quite sure I'd become 'Laughing Cow' or something!"
Luckily, the name echoed something far more personal and subtle. "John was dancing around me. He burned some kind of incense, drummed and chanted. He dubbed me 'Sunkmanitutanka Nagi', which means Shadow Wolf. In the Lakota tradition, the wolf is a teacher who lives in dark a shadowy places, appearing in light only from time to time to guide and teach people and other beings with his art. John said that I'm exactly that kind of a person, and I do see myself in that light. If I believed in reincarnation, I would definetely say that I was a wolf in my past life. For some weird reason, I feel an incredibly strong affinity for wolves."
"The fact that he named me Shadow Wolf gave me the shivers", Tuomas continues. "I'm certain that something happened in that ceremony, as I felt a weird feeling overtake me. The wildest thing was the gift that John gave me. When an Indian gives you a gift, it's not just anything, it's his most valuable worldly possession. Two-Hawks gave me a seashell wrapped in rabbit skin that had belonged to his forefather. I was stunned. It was such an unbelievable honor."
John Two-Hawks told the Soundi interviewer about the poem he delivers in 'Creek Mary's Blood'. "Lakota used to be a spoken language, which is why there are expressions in the English language that don't exist in ours. That's why my translation of the poem became longer than the original one. Still, I was surprised to see how well Tuomas' version translated to Lakota. He writes about Indian life in the poem, about how our land was robbed and our culture destroyed, and as I read the poem, it had quite an impact on me. He's a person coming from a completely different culture, and yet he's able to understand us. You can certainly see from the text that he has read the books 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' and 'Creek Mary's Blood' by Dee Brown."

White is a special color for Native Americans. Tarja is fully including mic and Tuomas has white shirt. NW respects them. Tuomas visited Kentucky and got influence and like always he puts his thoughts and feelings into songs.

Her is the translation of the Indian language words.
" I still dream every night
Of them wolves, them mustangs, those endless prairies
    The restless winds over mountaintops
The unspoilt frontier of my kith n'kin
The hallowed land of the Great Spirit
    I still believe
    In every night
    In every day
    I am like the caribou
And you like the wolves that make me stronger
    We never owed you anything
Our only debt is one life for our Mother
It was a good day to chant this song
    For Her
Our spirit was here long before you
    Long before us
And long will it be after your pride brings you to your end "

Thank you SO SO SO much for reacting to this track , a lovely reaction. Creek Mary is proof of why reactors should include Tarja (and Anette for that matter) in their reactions. Tarja absolutely divine in this number. Creek Mary was one of two tracks that Tuomas himself thought were Epic within the Once Album (the other being GLS) and it remains very underappreciated. Very many regard the ‘Nightwish trilogy’ as being GLS, Poet and TGSOE. To my mind the Nightwish trilogy is GLS, Poet and Creek Mary.

Only that this "John Two Hawks" was born as John Allen Hill, in Arkansas. The Oglala Lakota people do not recognise him, he is not enrolled with Oglala Lakota tribe nor any other tribe. - He, indeed, looks a Native here. It was different in the past. If you look for Ovid-Elsie High School class of 1986 yearbook (page 7, upper right corner), you will find young, curly-haired John Hill there.
    - He knows how to play flute, yes, but the rest is created for business purposes.

@@SueSueandthewolfman End of An Era concert is ultimate Yin and Yang for Nightwish fans who followed them since early days. It's really big celebration how much they grew and how massive and great their show turned out. Tuomas himself said that they rehearsed 9 years to that show and finally had everything they always dreamed. The other side of the coin is the incredible sadness that it ended there. Wish I Had an Angel was the last song and how they ended the show is so emotional. Tuomas is completely heartbroken, crowd is crying even they didn't know what will happen. Famous "And this is it" from the screen. If you ever watch it, remember to take a video of more than 7 minutes where you can see everything after the song.

John Two-Hawks is indeed Native American, “regarded as one of the world's preeminent Native Flute artists, Two-Hawks' music has earned him Grammy® and Emmy® nominations.” He is a mixed-blood person of Lakota/Irish descent, who is a fully healed survivor of the trauma of severe child abuse. He was not raised as part of any official tribe, but reconnected with the Lakota as an adult. Nightwish never performed this song without him. He performed it with them twice in 2007, in Dallas and San Antonio (No, I didn’t have the fortune of seeing it. :(. And here’s the kicker… according to a German Wikipedia site, he resides in Arkansas!
And I still think the lady skunk should be called, Haisunäätä (Finnish for skunk). Keep exploring Nightwish!

    That was stirring stuff!
John Two-Hawks has been doing some concerts this year.
His music has earned him Grammy®and Emmy® nominations.
Why shouldn't he be allowed to embrace both his Native American and Celtic heritage?
The wireless mike on the "flute", he used for his voice too, he really gets the flow of the music.
Tuomas wanted to get to know him, and invited him over to Finland,
looks like they got on well, similar in outlook, John liked the lyrics from Century Child.
Some natives don't like his accent, or words,
without realising his ancestry of mixed race parents, with Irish roots: Celtic-Lakota?
Tarja is superb, as usual, and their combination with Emppus solo, Tuomas soaring melodies, mmm, yum.
    NO Skunks in Eire!
Different mammals from mainland UK, Red Squirrel, Mustelid family: Pine Marten (sometimes known as "Marten Cat" locally), also a stinker!, Otter, Stoat and Badger (closest looking to your Skunk) the black and white is probably an adaption, so they can see each other in the dark.

I think what you meant was indigineous, but that doesnt mean NATIVE. It just means one group still having roots in very traditional way of life like Sami. They arent more NATIVE than lets say Swedish people.

Very beautiful song performed by a stunning Tarja with her dark soprano sound. Only the meaning of the lyrics, the contents very important especially for this song, from John Two-Hawks showed afterwards complete fraud. No one from the original native Lakota people understood later what he had said. It should have been the story of native Americans who were forced out of their homelands to live on reservations.
