  • ABCS president Dr. Jeffrey Swetnam of Swetnam Cosmetic Surgery explains how to lower your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) after body contouring procedures💡
These blood clot complications can happen after surgery, particularly after body contouring procedures such as tummy tucks or body lifts. This is because the surgeon is tightening muscles in these procedures, which can decrease the flow of blood and lead to blood clot formation in the lower legs that could then break off and travel to the lungs.
Here are Dr. Swetnam's recommendations to prevent this from happening:
1️⃣ Take a blood thinner like Heparin pre-operatively to reduce clot formation.
2️⃣ Use sequential compression devices (SCDs), which squeeze the lower legs and prevent clots by activating chemicals and mechanically encouraging the blood to circulate.
3️⃣ Ambulate (move around) early after your procedure.
4️⃣ Take a blood thinner like Eliquis for about ten days after the procedure.
It is critical to take these steps to protect body contouring patients' safety. What questions do you have about these precautions?
