  • The Stanford Chamber Chorale and University Organist Robert Huw Morgan, under the direction of Stephen M. Sano, perform Herbert Brewer's "Magnificat & Nunc dimittis in D."
This performance was presented on 31 May 2019 in Stanford Memorial Church. Robert Huw Morgan plays the 1901 Murray Harris organ.
Herbert Brewer was the organist at Gloucester Cathedral from 1896 until his death in 1928. He also acted as artistic director of the Three Choirs Festival during this time, and his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis
in D - still a staple of Anglican choral repertoire - were composed for his final festival, in 1927. Wonderfully, it is possible to find a recording of the Nunc Dimittis from that very festival - conducted by Brewer himself - on RUclips. His setting of the canticles perhaps do not contain the same consideration for characterization as those of his former pupil, Herbert Howells - rather than a treble entrance suggesting the Virgin Mary, for example, he provides a rousing unison choral entry - but its melodious lines and juicy cadences have guaranteed its popularity and status as an earworm for many generations of choristers. --Frances Molyneux
