    As a owner of both VR, an LG 3D TV (which use passive glasses) as well as a NEW Nintendo 3DS XL I have to say, once you play a game with 3D and then turn the feature off it's actually such a stark contrast that you REALLY start to miss that extra dimension that 3D provides. With eye/head tracking I could see glass-free 3D as a possible way to bridge-, and incentivize VR/3D development by offering both "seated play" AND "VR Play" in games. It would definitely not replace VR by any means, but it could open up to widen the market for stereoscopic games (and all the necessary rendering optimizations that goes into it) if people actually get excited about 3D screens it could open up to a lot of extra VR experiences and vice versa...
    As an example, when I play Alien Isolation with the motherVR-mod, I definitely miss the full tracking of a proper VR game, but honestly, even as a somewhat wonky seated experience it's still seriously thrilling. So I could definitely see how stereoscopic 3D games can be turned into low effort seated VR-Experiences. Meanwhile VR games can be adapted for 3D Screens (with simpler less fun custom controller methods). Sure, we all want the zero-compromized Half Life Alyx experiences in VR. But ultimately, if both markets grow they will definitely incentivize bigger game releases. And that could only be a good thing in my opinion. (and there are so many games that would be awesome for 3D screens, like racing- and flight sims.

      I have an 55" LG 3DTV, and I agree with you. I particularly like to watch the F1 racing in 3D, but no comparison when it comes to sim-racing with a VR HS; I love it, I am inside the car, and it feels absolutely natural when moving about to look outside or more closely at the inside of the car.
      It would sure be nice not to be wearing glasses for the experience, but I expect the cost of our size of screen would be pretty heavy.

      A head tracked television still requires you to essentially look forward though.
      Games like Alien Isolation are really cool in VR, but it isn't VR, and while it is a thrilling experience, what makes it thrilling is the fact that you can look around and be in the game. A 3D tv adds something, it adds depth and maybe some level of the game coming out of the screen, but it is still a very small Field of View, and turning your head means looking away from the screen.
      Having a hand reach out from a 3d tv can startle you, Sadako 3D got me really good the first time I watched it in 3d, for instance, but playing Resident Evil 7 in VR, even with a controller on the crappy PSVR (1) I found myself physically holding my breath as I waded through nose high sewage water in the flooded basement of a dilapidated house, because I was scared of swallowing water. You aren't going to get that with any TV, 3D or other, and like I said, I played the game with a controller, because the "move" controls on PSVR were trash and didn't have analogue sticks.

      Hey Pixel Shade! Good to see there's still some people who've experienced proper 3D TVs :) I actually use my VR goggles to play 3D Blurays in a virtual cinema environment, which, after some mucking about with settings, is actually already a lot better than any 3D the cinema's ever offered here. But the difference in 3D quality between different movies is *immense* imho .

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade Год назад

      @@KindOldRaven I haven't actually used my own VR headset for movie content. perhaps I should since I live in a small studio apartment? :D Movies are a beast of their own when it comes to the value of 3D. Some movies it just feels like a scene is built on 2D layers at different depth, like something that has been added in post editing stage, meanwhile others feel like they have been filmed- or rendered stereoscopically. I'm still kind of in love with my old TV. It might only be 1080p, but it is still beautifully designed and the 3D is definitely not headache inducing, which is great. :)

    • @rtyzxc
      @rtyzxc Год назад

      I've seen some demos where people put Vive tracker on their head (or the camera), to adjust the content on the screen, making the screen look like a window to an alternate reality. However, this mainly only works as a video because it's monoscopic. With a 3D display and eye/head position tracking it would work for human eyes. Imagine looking into a microwave except that the microwave window is the screen and you could play 3D pong inside it. Or anything. Games like Moss would be ideal and more comfortable played through an eye-tracked 3D screen compared to a VR headset.

    The tech to see 3D without special glasses is something I wanted for many years. I have had 3D screens from LG that had passive 3D, which you could watch with polarizing glasses. I bought it to play Tomb Raider in 3D and watch 3D movies. But the glasses were the problem and you needed to sit in a certain way in front of your screen. I stopped with it when I bought my Oculus Go and wanted to use that to see 3D. Even now I sometimes play Tomb Raider in 3D with my Pico4. The problem is most of the time the controller and the fact that sometimes you need the keyboard or mouse and with a headset on my head that is not easy.
    A monitor like that will not replace my VR Headset, but it will certainly replace my gaming laptop. I hope that the price will go down a bit and that the laptops will be available...

      Agree about the window thing but it's up to the devs to make it less of a window and more of a 3d board. Nintendo really nailed that part in some 3ds games (super mario 3d land) where you could switch between popping 3d and "window" 3d.

    Glasses-free 3D gaming has been there since the release of the 3DS back in 2012. And the New 3DS with head-tracking really made a major improvement on this. Having this tech for larger screens is very nice, but it's not like it's groundbreaking tech or anything.
    There was also at least 1 TV out there that had glasses free 3D, though I'm not sure if it included headtracking. I do suppose with current tech it's viable to make these TV's for groups of people nowadays. But this isn't a replacement for VR. Looking at a 3D image on a screen with depth is different from putting those screens so close up your face that it's almost like you're in the game world itself.

    Good 3D on a monitor absolutely is like looking through a portal.
    I have the best 3D TV ever made - a 65" LG 4K OLED passive 3D TV, and with a good 3D blu ray or a PC game rendered in 4K 3D, it is absolutely incredible.
    VR is more immersive because you're fully there, but this experience really is like a portal in front of you - it's an amazing alternative to VR that can happily exist alongside it.
    I can only imagine with glasses-free 3D and with high quality 3D image processing they're doing here, that will elevate the experience.
    If they can deliver this on a big 4K OLED screen, that would truly be a leap forward in the technology which could usher in the next phase of 3D displays.
    They need to find a way to get this to track multiple pairs of eyes at once, so they can deliver a multi-view experience on a large TV for multiple people.
    There was a lot of bad 3D back in the early 2010s, and people generally do not realise how good 3D can be and *is* already. It was and always will be the future until it becomes ubiquitous at such a high level of quality.
    2D monitors will be antiquated eventually - the truth is we all want 3D, not 2D, even if most people don't currently realise that.
    2D is absolutely shite in comparison to actual high quality 3D, and naturally that makes sense, since it's significantly less immersive and we do not view the real world in 2D.
    Both VR and glasses-free high quality 3D like this can happily exist side by side as alternatives to one another - that is definitely the future.

I'm one of those people who just can't go back to flat stuff so I've been waiting years for a glassesless + head/eye tracking for a "window" effect (first promised in that one wiimote hack video from 2007) . It really wouldn't be that hard since you could get the 6dof data from just tracking two irises tobii style with their known distance apart (ipd) as a constant to determine distance and then obviously relative position for pitch/yaw/roll.

    It will be great for 3D movies and games but VR is a totally different thing, you're in the world, inside of it. 3D doesn't make you feel like you're there in the same way ,no matter how good the stereoscopi effect might be.

I think lenticular displays lend themselves better if you want to create multiple views, i.e. more than one person (or position in front of the display) can see the 3D effect on a larger display.
