  • Biblical Improv
    Rev. Brian W. Johnson
    Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 4:12-13
We often think of the Bible as a book full of answers or instructions - something that tells us what to do, when to do it, and how to live for God. But a more faithful (and honest) way of understanding the Bible is as a training school. This is the story that teaches us to see the world as God sees it. God doesn’t give us a script or commands to follow (as if we are robots). Instead, God gives us a story and invites us to respond to it faithfully (as if we were doing improv). The goal of reading Scripture is to become so immersed in the story that we learn how to make our own lives part of the story. By diving into the story, we learn to live our lives as if they are part of the same story as the story of Jesus. What does it mean to live as if Jesus is the hero of the story of our lives? What does it mean to be so immersed in God’s story that our lives are lived in ways that are faithful to the God who we meet in the Bible?
