Cult-Like Behavior in Extreme Trump Followers

  • In a recent article on The Daily Beast, Dr. Steven Hassan refers to the cult leaders’ “playbook” and lists some of the mind-control strategies employed by former President Donald Trump: These include his grandiose claims, his practice of sowing confusion, his demand for absolute loyalty, his tendency to lie and create alternative "facts" and realities, his shunning and belittling of critics and ex-believers, and his cultivating an "us versus them" mindset. Of all these tactics, the "us versus them" mindset is probably one of the most effective. He says that from the moment you are recruited into a cult, you are made to feel special, part of an "inside" group in opposition to unenlightened, unbelieving, dangerous "outsiders."
Join us for an intriguing talk with Dr. Hassan on cult-like behavior in the political world.
Steven Hassan, Ph.D., is a mental health professional who has been helping people leave destructive cults since 1976 after he was deprogrammed from Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church. He is the author of four books Combating Cult Mind Control: The Guide to Protection, Rescue, and Recovery from Destructive Cults; Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves; Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People, Thoughts & Beliefs; and The Cult of Trump: A Leading Cult Expert Explains How the President Uses Mind Control.

A good portion of my family has been lost to The Cult of Tr*mp. I was shocked when I went to my parent's house to visit. Every single room had Tr*mp merchandise- from the throw blanket on their bed to the coffee cups they drink out of to the pens they write with. My parents have voted in every election but they have never ever had one single sticker from a politician. My Dad used to tell me "We are not 'fans' but rather constituents who vote them in and vote them out. " It is disturbing how they have changed, not only their ideas but the way they perform those ideas. In many ways, they are indoctrinating themselves by filling every room with Tr*mp gear and only watching one "news" station. Even if they did change their minds, they would have to throw away boxes of Tr*mp items that they invested capital in. That alone makes it difficult.
At this point, the only way I can have a relationship with them is to act as if they are sick. It helps me maintain empathy as well as my distance. I do my best to steer the conversation away from politics but it is almost as if they have nothing else to talk about. Tr*mp Thinking has perforated all aspects of their lives and by extension mine. I am thankful and simultaneously heartbroken about living in another state. I did not visit this year. I couldn't justify spending the money and my children did not want to go which is upsetting because I want them to want to share time with their grandparents. But I understand. The energy in their house is tense and stressful plus they tie every conversation to politics which isn't something preteens and teens want to talk about all the time. They refused to come to their oldest grandson's graduation OR Eagle Scout ceremony because we live in Portland, OR and they refuse to spend money in a liberal city. My son was heartbroken and upset because afterward my Dad asked him to come to his property this summer to help him work. My son declined.
Sad for families and worse for our country. Thank you to everyone on this thread for sharing and listening. It is weirdly like therapy. ♥

I’m sorry for you, it’s a dilemma. You are more compassionate and tolerant than me. My family all support him. We aren’t close, anyway but it was really the last straw for me. and it’s not that we have a difference of “opinions” or “politics” that I cut ties. It’s a difference in “Morality and ethics”. That kind of thinking causes great suffering and it’s life threatening for my friends who are LGBTQ, Muslim, Hispanic, Black, women, children, veterans, and everyone he demonizes and insults so people can blame them for their problems. My relatives claim they aren’t “political”, they don’t seek personal growth or learning, and they just vote Republican down the line and consider themselves “conservative”. Hate crimes have gone off the charts, along with guN VIoLeNCe. I have to wonder if these Republicans ever consider the future for our children and grandchildren. I just don’t have the tolerance for “willful ignorance” and I can’t have my kids around the toxicity and racism they promote. You may not be into “politics” but politics is into you and every aspect of your life so vote smart, because especially now, our lives depend on it. I consider us on tHE brink of “facism”. If you watch Hitler rallies, people loved and adored him, and swooned over him at his rallies, even turning in their friends and neighbors, sentencing them to death. I cried all night after the eLectioN. His supporters mock “liberal tears” and find it amusing its a bully mentality and he’s brought out the worst in humanity. He’s a corrupt, toxic, lying, self serving, repulsive, pussygrabbing, fascist, traitorous, threat to our national security, the country and the world. I’m so astounded 70 million voted for him twice, it’s made me lose faith in the citizens of this nation. We may never fully recover from the damages and carnage he’s inflicted. It’s tragic. and those classified documents are still at his REsORT! We officially entered the twilight zone when he walked down that escalator.HE belongs in prison.

Just because your parents are acting this way has nothing to do with Trump. Perhaps they really believe he was a better president. Do you really not see how so many people are totally filled with hate because they voted for Trump and not a Democrat candidate. I would be concerned if my parents were letting anybody anybody come between them and my family. There are plenty of people on both sides of the political parties who are not acting rationally these days. But there are also very stable people on both sides. I have had people just be so hateful towards me because I have chosen not to take the mRNA vaccine. And I am not. republican. Now I found out that the FDA has posted their research about how the vaccine causes heart issues(clots). So many people are getting these horrible side effects. And this man is very biased. Trump was not impeached because it was found that the evidence they put out there was false. And we do have almost 10 million illegal immigrants coming through out southern border who are now homeless. Some are trafficking children and some are bringing in fentanyl. This man really is focused on anything bad about Trump and not even looking at anything positive. Biden also has his issues. But this is an old clip so I will just say…do not give up on your parents. Your support and love is what will give them peace.

    Here's what I don't understand about this cult mindset in general but about Trumpists in particular;
These people are all aware of the laws in this country, as well as the basic social norms and expectations that apply to all of us, and that, as Americans, we all agree to follow and operate under.
My question is, how is it that people who, just yesterday, were living by these rules and norms and were condemning dishonesty, unlawful activity, defrauding people, speaking ill of others, physical violence, racist acts, Russian ideology, etc.. can wake up today and not only be suddenly okay with all of those things but (as with the insurrectionists, for example), also be perfectly willing to actively engage in those very activities?
At what point do they take a step back and say, "Wait a minute.. this has never been okay with me. What am I DOING?"
Or do they just deal with the dissonance and carry on against the principles, judgement and behaviours by which they have lived their entire lives, up until that moment?

thanks--it may not seem like it, but something like this epidemic of Trumpism doesn't just culminate in a few years or weeks. i just said last week in a post that i was a teen in the early 1980s, and that was when a change of attitude for the worse began. there were various factors, however, David Icke tried to get through to people for over 30 years that it has all been orchestrated and it's why JFK was assasinated in 1964. things have gotten worse and worse since then, right? however, they banned Icke from his YT channel in spring 2020 mainly because he has known the technocrat cult's plans more than anyone and Trump has been one of the paid actors of it. about the first thing he said after banned was, "they are under their spell now, meaning all those who have also been sucked into believing the covid madness, which was the latest attempt at what's been known as Agenda 21. the masks were just to dehumanize us further, so, Trump was just another faze in the agenda effort, and obviously in the last two years it's clear many have been under a very trance-like state, and part of the reason has been even trying trying to change brain neurons--what else can we expect when some have been foolish enough to let someone put a microchip in their hand? in other words, the Bible does actually predict all this was coming, but you need people who know how to interpret it properly. i'm not evangelic, but i was at an anti-vaxxer rally last summer and one evangelical guy told me part of about the 'demonic influence' can be found in the ENOCH section. just saying, however, maybe look for one of David icke's most important books called something like: "Everything you wanted to know but where never told. he's gone on to knew themes now but has over 20 books written about the technocrat cult.

thanks--well the problem is that Trump and most of them have owned the mainstream media, and it's also why the covid madness began two years ago, and David Icke tried to get through to people for over 30 years about it until they banned him from his YT channel in spring 2020. he has said the internet itself is a scam, which is in part what Bill Gates role has been about--they are all part of a Zionist Billionaire club these days that has had an agenda for us. so, right now it's very hard to say where it's all going, however, it is just as foolish or worse to trust Musk who wants to buy up and screw around with the internet more, which again is just more deception and control games. anything needs to be owned and controlled by the people instead of what is a cult in itself.

thanks Jan--i don't know if it helps you, but i've had one revelation in the last two years were one doesn't have to be Jewish to belong to the Zionist club, which is why Trump had been bailed out of so-called debt about four years ago by Soros and Rothschild Inc. if you look at it from when during WWI were Rothschild Inc were aloud to by up most of the Palestine land(Balfour Declaration), then we can see how there were the first 'Zionist soldiers' like Prescott Bush who was funding a well known Hitler funder who was in Europe then (Fitz Tyson), who had big money in banks and steel. i have no question Rothschild did it to secure the Zionist base which set off the warring 20th century. we traced that spelling of Rothschild which originates from Germany, so the other one without the s would be legitimate we guess. David Icke knows more about them than anyone probably, and it was the real reason he was banned from his YT channel in spring 2020. just something i've rarely mentioned to anyone--i was lied to about much by my parents, and one of them was about my Grandmother's maiden name that was Goldstone and i was always made to believe it was strictly an English name.

Dr. Hassan, you dimbulb, Barack Obama was not born in the United States.
FWIW, former President Obama was born in the Hawaii Territory. This is not part of the Americas and was not at the time of his birth a state within the United States of America. The United States grew to engulf Mr. Obama's birthplace, if you like.
These are subtle ideas, that the Americas are a geographical area, the United States a political unit, and Mr. Obama is a "natural born citizen" of the United States, as required by Article II of the Constitution.
I am sure that the learned Doctor Hassan could understand them one at a time; he is apparently unaware of them, or if he knows about them it is beyond him to understand their relevance.

I remember my then two-year-old son confiding in my one day that "Barney loves his kids" which explained to me how little ones are drawn to Barney, the big purple dinosaur. For adults, I can better define this as being a cult and getting their unrecognized unmet social and emotional needs met by being made to believe they have this special relationship with Trump, Hannity and a sense of belonging to a inner circle of "powerful" people.

Dr Hassan has given the first and only plausible answer as to why TFGs followers behave the way they do. The saddest thing about this is that those followers- many a paycheck away from poverty have been backing TFG financially when he is a millionaire. Some of those people are intellectually impaired and very vulnerable to 'suggestion' But evn people in high office have been drawn in. It is like 'Svengali'(Trump) has had his followers in a trance like he did with 'Trilby'
His three grown up kids have also been aiding and abetting their father to grift money off these poor people and had their own hands in the lucrative cash-register- they have NO CHANCE of the presidency because their name will be mud into eternity.
Victims of TFG are going to need anti-cult therapy for a very long time. I really hope people trained in cult therapy will help these people.
I believe, also, that some members of Congress and The Senate have also been dragged into TFGs web and are so greedy and needy they will do anything to earn TFGs endorsement. They have also become like CULT lieutenants for TFG and they will also need therapy.

Dr Hassan, thank you for this presentation, I appreciate it very much. I'm at the beginning, listening as I begin to write and will continue to write and comment as the the video progresses. I grew up in a small town in eastern Oregon which was dominated by Mormons. I grew up with Mormons, and worked for and lived with Mormons as a young man. I had many Mormon friends in school. When we went to recess I hung out with the Mormon kids because they were great kids and I liked them very much. Mormons are wonderful people, the Mormons I've known in my life are hard working wonderful people but I despise the Mormon church and consider the members of that church to be victims. So my childhood was my introduction to cults and I've been interested and fascinated by cults my entire life. I'm always on the lookout for cult behavior and unfortunately it's not hard to find.
I would like to know if you have any insights into what I refer to as Mass Psychosis? Is mass psychosis a part of cults? I believe that our country is in the grip of a mass psychosis right now and the Trump cult is a part of that. Am I wrong? I've been waiting for someone to come out and address this but so far have been disappointed. Thank you

Dr Hassan's message toward the end, the mostly unappreciated message that "greed doesn't work," has never been fully adopted by H. sapiens in spite of our inherent inclination to be altruistic. Unfortunately, we are also tribal. Those two conflicting aspects of human character have always been present - they are pretty much responsible, when you think about it, for all the beauty and all the horror human beings have ever created. But in a cult, the ultimate expression of both, that need to exclude and inculcate the drive for power and control, love and compassion are a weakness. I hope it is true that love and compassion can conquer our worst inclinations.

The remaining five were polite, friendly and whip smart. I was so impressed with the kind of parenting that it must have taken to raise such exemplary children that my respect for them only grew. Any cliches or misconceptions I had about Mormons simply disappeared. I feel like I made six new friends that evening and I cherish that experience.

I know I'm coming late to this (dinner) party but I just found this channel and felt the urge to respond. While most individual Mormons and their families are usually delightful, polite, etc., that's because they're not on the "inside" of that so-called religion. I doubt most even have a clue as to the true origins and early days history. They believe what they believe because that's all they've ever known - dissent and questioning are not welcome. Even if I grew up in Mormonism (LDS) I'd still personally have a problem with any 'religion' that requires me as a female to aspire to nothing greater than marrying and churning out babies. College? A career? Hah! No, woman, stay home and have babies - let the menfolk take care of the Important Things In Life. Pfui.

These include his grandiose claims, his practice of sowing confusion, his demand for absolute loyalty, his tendency to lie and create alternative "facts" and realities, his shunning and belittling of critics and ex-believers, and his cultivating an "us versus them" mindset. Of all these tactics, the "us versus them" mindset is probably one of the most effective. He says that from the moment you are recruited into a cult, you are made to feel special, part of an "inside" group in opposition to unenlightened, unbelieving, dangerous "outsiders."
Hardcore culties never think theyre in a cult. That's true. Just look at everyone believing Faucci that cloth masks work. When Fauccis email proved he lied and he knew cloth masks did NOTHING no one cared. Because they were in a cult. Their savior or prophet faucci was going to save them all. Meanwhile the leader of moderna was given 926 million as he retired. HMM maybe that was a large payout. You don't see many leaders getting that kind of a bonus. Where was the outcry by democrats for inequality? It was just crickets. But ya trump did some of those things listed above. Sowing confusion. Who else does this? Oh that's right the US and Europe and WEF. Carbon is causing global warming. Lets not take into account the larger solar flares from the sun the past two or three decades. Or that a the longer growing season actually helped increase food production and reduce famine. The sun definitely has zero affect on climate. Or the earths axis tilt. It's so funny that theres so much confusion. It's great for some. Politicians doing insider trading makes billions owning stock they give money to through congress. Elon getting a loan from obama. The WEF puppet crashed and burned Sri Lanka. Thankfully the people there woke out and burned leaders cars and forced him out of the country. You can't force a country to go all organic and then expect them not to have food shortages or a lower tea crop export so lower dollars which means they cant get oil for electricity.
Read the WEF. They promote US vs THEM. The WEF says they're educated and above and not a useless mouth to feed. There's a good point that yes TRUMP does these things, but so do ENVIRONMENTALISTS and the WEF. When one of the freaking founders of green peace a movement to save the environment and stop atomic bomb testings, when a scientist like that says carbon doesn't cause temperatures to skyrocket you gotta ask yourself why the confusion created by the government? Why the us vs them narrative? Oh were enlightened and are saving the planet vs oh youre a climate change denier. It's like a perfect example of that cult like programming. The government has an entire department of psychologists to try to convince more people to do what the government wants. But the green peace leader left and talked about how it was taken over by the left for power and money not the environment. There's been what a 95% reduction in climate related deaths over the last century. And talks about the ice cores and how temperature changes and the sun cycles. Like who knew that vikings were forced out of iceland because it froze and stopped farmers from farming. There was a mini iceage a thousand years ago. They don't teach that in public schools or in the media.

I have a friend who works in DC, he said it’s known (amongst people who aren’t in the cult), if trump were to ever buy his way back to president he’d establish Marshall law and never leave. All I can say is I hope there’s a good sniper out there if that ever happens..

Meditation helps me with anxiety and so has certain self-help books. None of them have made me feel I was bad...I allow that to happen. Reality is a very subjective term. Nothing wrong with love.

right, but Trump is an example of a sociopath who has been milking the weakness of much of the public who don't have the self-esteem to cultivate their own minds, and it has also had much to do with many these days 'looking for someone to believe in', which is a symptom of mediocracy mostly created by technology.

Was taken to an EST recruitment. Very interesting and being smiling and calm unglued them enough they ganged up on me telling me I needed to commit right that minute. Calmly told them the only immediate choice is if they fall to the floor pulseless, I have 3 min to chose to act. Nothing else is urgent. They left me alone.

The one common theme among all Trump haters is their complete unwillingness to ever discuss his policies and wether they were affective or not. It's always about these unprovable character assaults. Negative character assessments that cannot be proven or disproven about him and his followers. NEVER, about facts or the effectiveness of policies.

So is Trump an 'innocent' in doing what he does by instinct, or was he trained (which would seem doubtful since he is extraordinarily incurious)? As for the others QAnon etc, if that is psi-ops, then by who? Experts (inevitably there will be many) among the alt-right millions? Or influenced by Russia and maybe China? Or a co-operative activity between US alt-right and foreign actors, given that they have common goals?

Wow, now I understand why RUclips made a perfect harmony of interesting videos for me, the viewer, about cults, as I was concerned about a friend. Then suddenly, I realize its a big grand line up scheme leading to a political party bash. You're using your own knowledge of mind control to turn people for your own political gain or idea.
