Love, Signe xx
I’m a home garment sewist and it’s the best! Making designer dupes of clothing pieces is so satisfying.
How do you find the matching textiles? My problem is that I usually wear solids and sometimes get obsessed with a specific print because I am picky about print colors and shapes.
@@ifetayodavidson-cade5613 I have some go to stores: Mood, Stone Mountain Daughter Fabrics, and Blackbird Fabrics. I’m also SUPER picky about pattern and I love those places.
I do much more dreaming than actual sewing unfortunately. But the major reason is not finding quality fabric to get me excited about the project. Stores here in Chicago are filled with synthetics.
Signe, your journey from fashion designer to style coach is truly inspiring! Your commitment to slow fashion and helping others increase their style confidence is admirable. Keep shining your light and empowering us to embrace lasting style and a slow lifestyle. 💫🌿 #SlowFashion #StyleConfidence #Empowerment
I tried doing monthly capsules this past year...beginning every month I would take a look at the calendar and quickly put together the outfits I wanted to wear based on what my upcoming month looked like. It was so eye-opening! I need far fewer clothes than I used to think when I would fill my closet for an entire season all at once. It also got me to focus on wearing all my clothes and felt like I never got bored with my clothes. Every month I could switch it up. It also showed me what I really like to wear. So many benefits, I'm doing it again 2024. I also decided for 2024 to photograph any new items I buy and create an album for them on my phone. I think I am low buying...but at the end of an entire year, I have my doubts. We will see.
My Mom made me the most beautiful clothes when I was a child in the 60s. I’m grateful she passed along her sewing knowledge to me. I don’t have her patience, so my basic skills aren’t as good, but I try. I do make my own home soft furnishings, but haven’t done so well with the more complicated dressmaking. I also do most of my own alterations, especially hems and taking clothes in.
Great inspiration, thank you Signe. Similarly to you, I have learned over the last few years of trying to dress more ethically and purposefully that no matter how much you support a brand's values, if clothes don't fit your body or suit your style it's not a sustainable purchase. Especially if you then buy several items from sustainable brands, or preloved, to fill that gap in your wardrobe, and none of them work, and you lose money and energy and space in the process. Buying that one perfect item from Zara (urgh) may be the more sustainable choice at times... needs thought though!
Shopping in physical stores is not available to all sizes/is highly dependent on where you live - but awesome that it’s possible for you!
This is such a lovely and motivating site! I want to return to sewing for style and pleasure. There is one caveat to online shopping vs. in person. Plus-sized fashions in stores are usually limited in style, colors, and variety. A very frustrating endeavor. So shopping online is a thousand times more pleasurable. That said, I could still use your sage advice.
I love your common sense and practical guide to fashion. The idea that you shared that doesn’t work for me is in person shopping. I live an hour and a half from the closet shopping area that has a variety of stores. Last week, I needed a few Christmas gifts, no luck at all, plus I wanted to look for a blazer and sneakers for myself. I did buy both but really don’t like either. The whole way home I thought I could have just ordered them, tried them out and sent them back if they didn’t work. Now I have to spend three hours round trip to return one item-I’m keeping the sneakers but don’t love them. Plus, most stores inventory is very low.
I had to buy a whole new wardrobe this year (years of weight loss) and I chose very slowly and selectively. I love my wardrobe now and want nothing more, it’s a great feeling. I wasn’t always able to get ethically-made and eco-friendly items, but did my best to buy classic, high-quality, natural fiber clothes that I can wear forever. I always purchased this way in the past, but went temporarily nuts with fast-fashion shopping online during the pandemic lockdowns, when I thought I couldn’t get through the loneliness and boredom. I no longer browse online to see “what’s new”, there is always something “cute” I’ll want!
Best wishes to you on your sewing journey. I love sewing, I am not that good at it, and I happily do it anyway. Lately I have been wanting a new grey hoodie. My husband had one I was trying to give away. I thought well that's nuts, just cut the one we have down and reassemble it to fit me. So I did.
That jumpsuit is gorgeous and it suits you so beautifully. Inspired that you made this. :)
That jumpsuit! That’s amazing!
That jumpsuit looks amazing!
Happy Holidays!!! Thank you, Signe, for another great year of inspiring content!
I love that you sew! It’s such a great skill to have.
Merry Christmas! Enjoy your break. Looking forward to your channel in 2024.
Happy holidays, Signe, and thank you so much for creating this inspiring channel for us! I will take up your suggestion to reflect on my style evolution of the past year and make a gentle low buy resolution for 2024. Enjoy your holidays with your family and see you in January!
Thank you for your thoughtful content. Wishing you a lovely, well-deserved holiday.
Many thanks! Happy Christmas to you and your family. x
Thank you for all your great ideas this year! Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!
That jumpsuit is perfect!!! You're an artist! And it suits you sooo well!
Thank YOU Signe for another great year of informative and inspirational content. Enjoy your break! Happy Holidays to you and your family 💕🇨🇦.
I'm finding myself becoming a lot more comfortable with where my style is, which has helped me to inadvertently stay on a no-buy with the exception of any replacements I need to make. I will say, however, that I feel like you have been a shining example for me when it comes to shifting my mindset away from constantly wanting to have a more creative headspace when putting together outfits! Thank you for the motivation, Signe! 😊❤
Happy Holidays! Thanks for all your suggestions and tips through the year! I used to make almost all of my cloths. After listening to you, I thinking about giving it another try! I’ve learned so much from you and look forward to your thoughts in 2024!
Love the jumper you made.
So many great ideas that I would like to try out too!! Love this video!! Thank you for the inspiration!!!
Very nice and motivating video with good inspirations!
However, I think, I could never make a weekly wardrobe plan, because what I wear depends so much on my mood of each day! But I got a very helpful routine for me that helps me to get dressed easier each day: I always keep one peace of the day before, eg the pants, and then I choose only the shirt/sweater to wear with it. The next day I keep the shirt/sweater and choose a new bottom for it. I think about that just in the few minutes before standing up in the morning. For me with this methode it's so easy to get dressed, and it's really fun! I never feel stressed not knowing what to wear. Try it 😉😊
Just what I needed. Thank you! I'm also a huge fan of Pintrest so it would be great to see your inspirations/moodboards etc there. Happy Christmas to you and your family 💕
Thank you so much for all you have done in this year. Best wishes from The Isle of Wight, England.
Love these ...I already do the weekly fashion plan and it is a fun ritual. I have been using vests and shirts this week with cardigana. Thank you! HNY!
Thank you for continuing to further the conversation about style, being a conscious consumer and always looking at what we own in new ways! I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas and a really enjoyable and rest time off. I like what you said about colour. I recently got myself a hot pink sweater and I am so excited to wear it because I am learning that my power colours are worth having but the other colours that don't suit me I won't pick up. I definitely want to think about what my goals will be for the year. I know that one of the areas I did well in was being more discerning about what I brought in so I bought way fewer items in for both shoes and clothes and jewelry. Secondhand is something I am going to look into also.
Thank you Signe, really great ideas to plan for the year ahead. I recently updated my wardrobe Pinterest board reducing the number of pins to a select few as I used to just add and add to it. Working with fewer pins really keeps me in tune with my personal style and helps when choosing new things for my wardrobe. Loving the Sustain This podcast, best wishes for the new year x
Wow, that jumpsuit! ❤ Awesome job, and it looks so great on you!
Merry Christmas Signe! Thank you for all your great content this year. Now I'm off to update my Pinterest mood boards.
Happy holidays!
I love your big green coat. I have been searching second hand stores for a similar style for quite a while. Maybe 5his will be the year!
Hi Signe love sewing and 2024 is the year for starting the multitude of projects that are currently in my sewing room. Very impressed with your jumpsuit tailoring a professional look is very hard to achieve. Love Bernadette Banner she is such an interesting historical costumer. I sewed so many things for my boys growing up and now when I look at photos it is not only the joy of seeing them but also remembering what I created. Best wished for the new year. I am also buying more face to face as it does mean less regret however another thing I do is try on in the store and then wait for it to go on sale online. This covers a couple of good buying habits- try things on first, wait to see if I really want it and buy when these two avenues are covered.
Thrifting local has its own advantages and disadvantages. I end up spending lots of time when I go and sometimes find nothing or find a few things in a great condition that I don’t have on the list. So it feels tempting to buy them anyway since so much time has been wasted. The items end up costing much less than any online second hand offers and no shipping involved. But if time and the list are priority then online shopping is more efficient
Great reflections!! And good point about it sometimes being more tempting to pick up something when you’re in a physical store (that perhaps weren’t on your list), I relate to this so much! So yes, totally agree - both has advantages and disadvantages! also quite like how you can filter your search online which takes away the feeling of overwhelm that can hit you especially when you’re in a thrift store. But I’m excited to give physical stores more focus next year and see how I get on! Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching 🙏🏻❤️
@@UseLess_dk your point on jeans is my current pain 😅 can’t find any in a local thrift. They are flooded with skinny jeans with worn out knees. And online secondhand sellers rarely post measurements. I don’t understand why it’s not a common sense, I’ve been shopping secondhand for a few years now. Like you said, I may just buy new ones and try to make them last as long as possible
@@joanurchin1218So true about measurements 😢 And online sellers are soo reluctant to do it when requested 😅
This is such a great video, thank you! 👏👏👏
this jumpsuit looks amaizing ❤
Very useful and I can relate. I am adding in accessories for now because all of my neutral clothes need fun shoes and stylish handbags. I feel like for me that’s a big part of defining my personal style. I am still using my Freeform app on my iPad to create my vision boards and I have already added some spring/summer sandals & 2-handbags. I am going to change out the buttons on one of my favorite white cotton shirts to bring it back to life. I am also going to look into raising the hem on two of my spring/summer shirt dresses. I feel calf length is too long for me and I didn’t wear these two dresses at all this year. If I have left over fabric I will add pockets. I also hemmed my own jeans I purchased that were way too long instead of returning them since I really love them. I love applying some of your suggestions and seeing things from a fresh perspective. Happy Time Off & I wish you the best for the coming year for you and your family 🎄♥️
Sew more….very much interested in this part…..
Virkelig flot jumpsuit, klæder dig supergodt . Well done !
There are some clues in this video that you may accept my challenge to sew a slip skirt in 2024. 😉
Wonderful video. You are so very inspiring. ❤
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Isabelle from Belgium🎅
Thank you really enjoyed this video
Merry Christmas from Papua New Guinea
Thank you. I will definitely checkout the group you shared. Another channel people might enjoy is Catherine Sews, she recently restyled a gorgeous mohair sweater.
Happy Holydays !!
I've also realized that I don't like shorts. I bought few pairs of linen and linen/blend pants for summer. I have found them to be extremely breathable and suitable for warm weather if you can get on board with a slightly wrinkled look ;)
Signe, there’s a spot on your long green coat, near the bottom front, it’s probably hard for you to see in normal indoor light. I find if I get items with spots in to the cleaners right away, they can usually get them out, but not if I wait too long. (Here in California, the law requires that they use non-toxic “wet-cleaning” processes, they have special equipment (“steam-frames”) and aqueous processes, so we don’t have to worry about that anymore. I do send in my wool blazers and coats, they’re not washable, when they get a spot I can’t remove with a Shout wipe, or if it leaves a residue). I always take new items, and my items after a wearing, to my biggest, brightest window to inspect them before accepting the new item, or putting a previously-worn item away. I learned this the hard way when pulling out my expensive wool corporate clothes after storing them for grad school, some had permanent stains by then, which had darkened and set with time. I I think they must have been from “clear” liquids like soda or wine and I just didn’t see them before storing. It’s also sad how many “new” items I receive that have spots on them from influencers wearing them, then returning them. It costs the rest of us more money.
Thank you for mentioning it - I have noticed it, I had some mud on it and kind of just wiped it off with a damp cloth but I think I may need to go in again haha! I actually find that regular dish soap helps clean off a lot of stains 🙏🏻
Great tips!!
Did you find your striped bedding secondhand? I have been on the hunt for that style for our guest room! 😃
2:26 do you have details on this shirt? Such a lovely color! 🤍
It’s great that you’re getting into sewing but let me warn you it is addictive. I sew and knit and even though I buy most of my fabrics, yarn and patterns at thrift stores that is the one area that I haven’t been able to tame and really need to work on. Finished garments make my wardrobe bigger, which goes against reducing it into a size I’d be more comfortable with. I’m trying to be really intentional with any added garments (hand made or otherwise) and will start tracking (items in vs out, number of wears, etc) as a way of taming that closet. Love your resolutions and approach.
Is not showing your legs a Danish cultural choice? You're still so young! I suppose your temperatures are never over 78 F.
Why are the colours so boring? Lack of personality , like reel colours, no beige , white and black. Blue yes but little navy. I hate understatement!
Your wall are empty, what about cozy art? This DYJ ist tiresome, hate modern esoteric way of life, sickening! More is better, consum😊
