    Another great video, Chuck. Going to have to stick to hand burnishing for the foreseeable future unless Weaver wants to send me a Power Edge Slicker for my birthday lol. I'd settle for an autographed Chuck Dorsett photo though. God Bless

    Thanks for the tips. However I couldn't see any shine on that edge. I know your camera isn't set up for close up shots, but seriously just take some cluse up pictures of the little details and roll them in. Maybe add a slight pan if you want some movement. Just a suggestion.

    Chuck, I agree wholeheartedly. The only problem is that for most crafters the cost of that sander/ slicker is way out of a crafters budget. Weaver makes beautiful equipment but the price is too expensive.

    That slicker is great for s production leatherworker,. I'll have to stick with my oscillating spindle sander and my power slicking wheels for the flexshaft on my Dremel. Much too poor for that yet. Keep rocking the great leather prices, Still my favorite place for 8oz and bellies!!!

    Chuck, thanks for all the great videos. I’m making a belt and putting a liner on for the first time. I don’t want to use a solid 20ft piece of thread to sew it. How do you splice smaller pieces of thread together when hand stitching? Thanks.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 лет назад

      Hi Tanner,
      If you're using shorter pieces you'll have to either knot or backstitch when you get to the end of your thread and then start with a new piece from the last hole. Some people prefer backstitching and then burning the ends and some people prefer tieing a knot. You can see in the video below where I knotted and then started with a new piece. Hope that helps! ruclips.net/video/LmU2OLNjTew/видео.html

    This appears to be another Leather Element missing from The Leather Element playlist.
    As others have pointed out, $890 is not a budget minded tool. It might be budget minded for someone with a leather craft business making a living from leather work, but not for a hobbyist. I think if I decide to advance past hand burnishing, I'd have to explore the burnishers and sanding drums designed to work with inexpensive drills first. I see a variety of inexpensive bench buffers on Amazon that have drill chuck attachments available for them. I know, one gets what one pays for.

  • @scottmorrell148

    Well, you guys read my mind again , as I was just thinking about this machine last night. LOL! Anyways, I do have a few questions: Is it variable speed? Is there any real benefit to having a variable speed motor? What are the spindles like, i.e. length and diameter? What grit is the stock sanding sleeve? Although I am sure that the cocobolo roller does an amazing job with burnishing, I am looking into purchasing a different wooden roller and sanding drum. Thanks, as always, for another great video!

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Ken!
      Sorry about the delay in answering! The motor does not have a variable speed, from what we've tested we don't see a need for variable speed but this is up to personal preference. The wooden roller spindle is 3/4" diameter and 5-5/8" long. The sanding sleeve is 80 grit and measures 2-1/2" diameter and 4-1/2" long. The motor is 1725 rpm. Hope that helps!

    I am sorry to say, but this boils down to a motor, a belt, a pulley on a shaft, and the attachments. I don't see this being a $850 tool. Get a drill press and chuck the attachments. Upside: you will also have a drill press.

      Hi Tony,
      The burnishing roll does not have a wide enough spot for the back of belts, the widest part is about an inch. Sorry about that!

    • @jenniferstephenson
      @jenniferstephenson 5 лет назад +1

      Tony, you may want to take a look at Beiler's version of this machine. It has the wooden burnisher and a smaller sanding drum on the right side. On the left side instead of the wide sanding drum there is a Cordura drum. I wrap mine with canvas. Not sure if that would work for slicking down the back of your belts. I do believe Weaver has the Cordura drum available separately....but I wouldn't want to be switching it out all the time.

    Thanks for the video. Perhaps you can help explain this: why do people in USA call leather 3,4,5 8 & 9 ounce etc. To me that is meaningless. We measure leather by the thickness of the hide. eg 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5, 4,5 or 6mm etc.
    Whenever I hear ounces, I have to think well one ounce is about 30 grams - which still doesn't relate to leather in my mind. Whereas 1/8", 1/4" or metric sizes thick are instantly pictured.
    Thanks.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  3 года назад +1

      Hi Ian,
      I unfortunately don't know the reason why it's measured in oz. but, we do have a leather thickness conversion chart that you can easily see the conversion from oz. to mm if you have any questions. www.weaverleathersupply.com/learn/leather-101/leather-thickness

    Can You Stain/Dye over Gum Trac ?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Vic,
      I haven’t tried dying over a top coat or Gum Trag, but, I fear there may be some issues. The dye would struggle to wick in so you may have a bad rub-off problem even with an additional top coat over that. The consistency of the outcome may be another issue. I wish I had a better answer for you, so, if you try this and you like the outcome let me know!
