But Ackerson IS "evil" in the extended Halo lore.... namely the comics material where he repeatedly tries to have John (The Master Chief) killed under the guise of testing him militarily. Later himself being taken revenge against by Cortana as she forges having him sent to the front lines after learning about what he tried to do to Chief.

Hi, there! Sure, he's "evil," but I'd argue he's more of a morally murky figure. He's been through the wringer of the Human-Covenant war, seeing friends and comrades fall like dominoes. That stuff changes a person. Ackerson's all about doing whatever it takes to keep humanity kicking, even if it means some seriously questionable moves. Like, he's not twirling his mustache and cackling evilly - he's just laser-focused on survival.
