I definitely tend to steer clear from #3... such a big issue with YA!

I agree with you 100% on all points! I am happy that I am not alone on this.

I can't stand love triangles! Or animal sidekicks! Or evil-for-the-sake-of-evil! I also can't stand gooey romance, and erotica is right out! I'm not a fan of prologues (altho I recognize this is less trope than book structure). Books with maps &/or glossaries can fvck right off, too!
I'm not picky at all 😂

😂 I love maps but totally feel you on the prologues! Those are not my favorite

I feel like every writer should watch this video because it emphasizes on the negative impact on the (unfortunately) most popular tropes today. #3 is probably the reason I don't read that much Wattpad anymore ✋😂

Totally agree that most enemies to lovers tropes are toxic. I absolutely love the *healthy* version of this trope though. When I think of enemies to lovers I think of the trope that our characters dislike each other/ can’t stand each other and they have lots of banter and arguing until they eventually realize that they actually do care about each other. Definitely definitely agree that if it’s physically abusive that is not something teens should be reading about and aspiring to have in real life though!

That makes sense! I agree, I'm totally on board with characters going from not liking each other to falling in love because that happens irl, but it starts to lose me when those characters are either really mean/cross lines/etc when they're in the enemies stage because I feel some of those things are hard to come back from. And yes glorified abuse is not OK 🤮

Totally agree with you on how toxic and wrong the glorified abuse trope is in YA books, or all books in general!

If it's not justified by the character arc it drives me absolutely crazy

Great video and good choices in the list this video

You nailed it with this video. These terrible tropes are exactly what is wrong with the 'blockbuster' movies and best sellers today.

Me with my main character having 2 dead parents watching 👁👄👁

In my defense, my main character NEEDED to have dead parents to drive the plot forward. Its an overall sad story where from a joung age she ends up an orphan after witnessing the death of her parents. Then she ends up in the foster care system until it gets to the present time. But her past experiences shape her into who she is, why she thinks the way she does and acts the way she does. Also her love interest has a dead mom who died giving birth to her 😅 so really, I'm just running that thrope to the ground in my story haha
