My wife's favourite song of all time, When I hear it she rushes back to me. I whisper in her ear that I love her and always will, appreciate each other because time together can be so short.
I am so excited because I have a ticket to see Elkie brooks at fringe by the sea, North Berwick. I listened to this song and all the others when I was young. I am glad to be able to watch Elkie brooks live all these years later.
It was a great time at fringe by the sea North Berwick, 2023. It was so exciting to see this great performer in person and I made a new friend beside me with her company. It's a great memory.
Absolutely beautiful rendition of this song. I always think that Elkie Brooks has been under-rated...she is truly a class act; up there with the greats.......
I first heard this when I was 18 years old. I was busy acting not interested in the young man that should have been the love of my life. I only new him for a few weeks before he died in a car crash. The song, to me, is like a glass of wine, beautiful and strangley comforting. I miss him.
Still sends a shiver down my spine when I hear it, so powerful, delicate and emotional, too many people I have lost come to mind when I hear it. Elkie Brooks should have been appreciated more than her glimpse fame showed her catalogue of great work.
love the music and what a voice! not many female singers of today can sing like Elkie! Very lucky to have grown up in the 70s and 80s because music was so much better then...
Elkie Brooks is a another wonderful artist I feel did not get the recognition worldwide she deserved. Timeless "Lilac Wine", dynamic song and dynamic voice, a true classic.
This beautiful, haunting song should have millions of listeners. It's awesome, moving and just perfect. Elkie Brooks has an amazing, sexy voice! Love it. Timeless!
My aunt and then I, used to perform this in clubs. Mine was a token/adorable kid addition but it was one of my faves and I can't listen to anyone else sing it. I'm going to try Buckley but not hopeful. Sterling song. Elkie rocks.
Simply stunning.I've been lucky enough to see Elkie 3 times now and from the 1st time,in 1977 to just 2 years ago she has only improved. And Lilac Wine IS Elkie.
In 1978 (yeah, THAT long) I heard this on the radio late at night. I was trying to guess who the singer was and I was astonished to hear the DJ say that was Lilac Wine by Elkie Brooks. I've been a fan of hers ever since that night 40 years ago in the depths of West London.
Wow! That opening open fifth, and the first words "I lost myself on a cool, damp night" is one of the best beginnings ever. The rest of the song is tremendous as well - sweet and heady, in fact.
I remember hearing elkie sing back up to cat stevens. Love both singers. But then songs came. From the amazing elkie brooks. So amazing to listen to. She is the queen of British soul music. X
Elkie never done back up for Cat Stephens . But she did do a duet with him . “ Remember the Days of the Old School Yard “ She’s still touring and sounds better than ever.
Many thanks to everyone who has made positive comments on this video/song, and sorry I am a bit tardy in getting back to some of you. I must have a 'You Tube Day' and catch up with all the great feedback I have received. In the meantime, many thanks - all of you. Tony :-)
Amazing to see how many years this thread has been going! It brings back so many memories for me too. Such a powerful rendition. It was used this evening (18/11/22) on Radio 4's 'Add to Playlist' programme. They played the version by Ana Moura, a Fado singer. It was also beautiful (enough to make me want to hear more from her), but nothing will ever beat Elkie's version. I was lucky enough to see her sing it live in Coventry many years ago. Absolutey beautiful. Goose bumps still bumping 😊
Thank you for posting - she does this so much grace. Her voice is amazing. Jeff Buckley - gives it a different feel. I love Jeffs' but this reminds me of the first time i heard the song. And I live in Manchester, and used to go to Bookbinders, family of Elkie I think!! Elkie - if you ever read this, salt beef bagel has your nake on it, or chopped herring. Manchester!!!! Long before Oasis etc... we had bloody good music! Elkie proves that. x
Absolutely adore Ellie brooks even though she was a bit before my time ! My favourite track is ' lilac wine' - first heard it aged 17 , just left home and had my first lesbian experience to it! Surprisingly sexy song lol
Still listening april 2023,the old songs like this are the best and stood the test of time❤

Yea totally agree❤

Hats off 👏 it's a beautiful couples song 🎵 ❤
It's so personal.. You understand
Beautifully put.
Elkie has the honour of being the first singer to make me cry. Her fabulous voice plays with my emotions. She is remarkable.!!
Without doubt, the most underrated female singer to come out of Britain. It's criminal she didn't make it in the States.
This version has no contenders. Used to cost me a small fortune on the pub juke box. So nice to hear it again.
I know of 1 song on this morning program, liss lady the real deal perfect in her words and passions
Just indescribable. Raw emotion and so different to what is considered art nowadays. What a beautiful song.

Power Ballard and a half. No one has ever come close to this song
Elkie has a great set of lungs and she knows how to deliver a song .

What a nice sentiment, I hope that you have found peace and contentment now ❤
