  • I had some requests for a video explaining a few key inline goalie basics to goalies who were either new to the position or returning after long breaks. In this video you'll get my thoughts on improving your RollerFly slides, how to get your butterfly pads to rotate properly and I'll also help you with some of the fundamentals of the butterfly itself. These are things that I've learned from watching other goalies either here on RUclips or in person and also from playing the position in beer league for about a decade. These are the kind of tips I like to find on RUclips from other goalies. This is an incredible platform for learning how to do almost anything. Where would the world be without RUclips?

    I can’t thank you enough for making this video. The strapping tip was great and the best tip was how high you have to have your push leg when sliding. I think from watching ice hockey goalie videos I wasn’t using the right angle to push off. I laughed my ass off too when you said it’s hot in that garage in August with all your equipment on because I’ve been doing the same thing in my garage and sweating like an animal

    • @iceicegoalie-OG

      Hahaha thanks Charles, I'm glad I could help. The garage is mighty toasty this time of year no question. Repetition is another secret to getting smoother pushes. The more you do it the more natural it becomes - and if you play any ice hockey after working in RollerFlys for a while, the pushes on ice are ridiculously easier.

    Truthfully I have never played inline hockey. I've played street hockey on inline rinks but never played with rollerblades on. I look back at all the years of me playing and find it odd I never played or tried inline hockey. A bunch of guys I work with want me to play but I am too busy playing on the ice. You offer great tips and make this video very fun to watch. Cheers!

      Hey thanks BLH! Ice hockey is the better game, no question, but inline hockey is easier to get into. It's less expensive and you don't have as much competition for the playing surface. There's a bunch of nice outdoor rinks around you can play on for free. I started on the wheels and moved to ice later. In playing both I noticed roller guys generally have really fast hands and ice players dazzle you with skating. At first ice was way harder for me because it was so different, but now I feel like the more difficult crease movement and slides from roller actually give me an advantage on ice. It's like swinging 2 bats while you warm up to hit in baseball.

    Damn bro, I use to play for Mission Detroit Stars back in the day was their goalie when I was younger, use to play Brodeur Heaton lite 4 was my pads then, and I learned how to do splits and play low on them before butterfly pads were a thing.
    And about 3 years ago I strapped back up for the first time in almost 8 years, and the last I had played was on ice, so was use to lateral movements again from that. I got a cheap deal on some bombass Vaughn Visions that were in great shape, and thought I was gonna go out there like in the good ole days and shine like I use to with my boys in some bar league drop in with my old team. Needless to say bad choices were made, and in 30yrs of goalie of never having a severe injury, other than pulled groin, I was on sportcourt that was missing part of a tile in my crease, and I came across In a hard push butterfly, not properly stretched, and pads unknown to me, not knowing rollerfly was a thing.... I hit that missing tile, pad stuck like glue, I went up over my leftside and leg and tore something in my knee. No docs are willing to give me a MRI, I have had this injury for 3 years now, and my knee is unstable.
    Going to see a specialist finally in 2 weeks again, to see if this one will do anything. I want to play goalie so bad again, any suggestions if I can build my knee back up to try and get back in the game?

    • @boostedbadboyzx12r31
      @boostedbadboyzx12r31 2 года назад

      And watching your video that was another thing I did wrong, was I remember I fucked up and went to tight all the way up on the pad, cuz it was thinner than my old Heatons, and I was use to how they rolled, and I haven't done splits in forever and pads fit wayyyyy tighter than they use to. Lol shit I was like 160lbs last I played in good prime shape, and went back 230lbs much bigger build, and I was like huh, these all fit a lil snug. Lmfao... oh well 😆🤣😂🤷‍♂️

    • @iceicegoalie-OG

      Sorry about that knee. You really need a proper diagnosis. I wonder why they won't do the MRI. But - when I've been injured I can't say enough good things about physical therapy. Those people know how to strengthen the muscles around the injury so the injured area is spared some of the burden. Also don't play on a bad surface. My rink has a huge pile of replacement tiles that easily swap in if one breaks.

      @@iceicegoalie-OG yeah this wasn't our normal place and a shit show honestly, I should have went with my gut instinct and not gone on it. It was sport court laid over fucking astroturf. Because they didn't wanna pull the turf but they wanted a rink in this place when they had 4 other fields of turf. So stupid, they were more worried about me suing than they were my injury. And of course I didn't think it was as bad as it was at the time. Next day couldn't walk or bend my knee, they wanted me to do physical therapy before a MRI. So stupid... we had no idea what was even wrong.
      Said hey doc, do you wipe your ass before you take a shit? He kinda nervously laugh, and said no that would be silly, why?... I said because it makes about as much sense as doing physical therapy before you know what's even wrong... and he stopped dead in his tracks, and said, that's a good one. And you're right but it's insurance.
      I tried PT, but they didn't even know what to work on cuz we didn't know what was torn, and the place I went to, the PT wasn't great, I shoulda looked around more honestly. But it healed and tore a few more times over the years, and its to the point I need MRI for sure. So we'll see what they say, I hope I can get back in net and can play again, hasn't been the same without it. Now I got my daughter playing and daddy wants to show her how it's done. Lol

    Great video! I never played roller, so I always used to wonder how you guys approach the butterfly. I used to be terrible at it (even on ice) because I thought you were supposed to go flat down on your knees, lol. Then I finally figured out that I had to go down with my feet parallel to the ice...that's one of those realizations that took a lot longer than it would have if RUclips had been around. Of course, that was back in the days when dinosaurs, Ford Windstars, and the cast of Full House roamed the Earth.
    Just a quick tip on the skate strap: I saw the strap on the Warrior pads has gotten pretty chewed, so you might want to wrap some hockey tape on the cowling/upright of your skate where the strap rests. That'll give the straps a surface to slide on, rather than rubbing against the metal and getting cut. I used to have a lot of trouble with that before I started putting the tape on and I never had any issues after I did that.

    • @iceicegoalie-OG
      @iceicegoalie-OG  3 года назад +1

      That tape on the skate to protect the strap is an awesome suggestion. I've been especially worried about the strap on my newer (black) Warriors because that's just stretchy fabric nowhere near as tough as leather.
      RUclips changed the world no doubt. It's great for hockey tips, but I also use it to learn everything from fixing toilets to killing creeping charlie in my lawn.
      Full House would have been better if they drove around in a Windstar with a dinosaur for sure. I don't know why they didn't think of that.

      @@kalaalefaio5108 It's funny - I watched a bunch of videos on recovery when I first started. It's all about where the puck is, and how comfortable you are popping up. Funny you should ask - (short answer: for inline, No)
      Long answer: I've been wondering about this. I tried several methods for inline and always had trouble with the lace tangling in the wheel. Almost all my inline goalie friends do not use toe ties. For ice I've always used them but recently had one break mid-game. I just removed it and didn't even notice a difference the rest of the game. I'm thinking of scrapping the whole toe tie thing all together because like you say - "it would save a lot of time" - I don't really even know what the point of them is. • @iceicegoalie-OG

      I've tried it both ways. I really think it's different for for each set of pads. On this set there is less tension with the strap around the boot instead of through that hole in the heel. On my newer set, because of the position of the strap, it feels better with the strap through the heel hole. Are you using toe ties? With your leather heel strap being so tight, the pad will not rotate the right way. Put the strap through the same one that you do with the elastic, and leave it loose enough to rotate. That's why your G4 pads are Velcro, they are meant to stretch and allow rotation.

    • @iceicegoalie-OG
      @iceicegoalie-OG  8 месяцев назад +1

      It totally depends on the level of play. In street hockey around here they use a light plastic ball that works well with the lighter protection of most street pads. For inline we use a heavier weight hard plastic puck. Some inline players can shoot that puck pretty hard and I wouldn't want to face them without better protection. But if we're talking about young kids or beginners that are not shooting very hard yet you might get away with it for a while. Ice pads come in lots of price levels so they're the safest and most convenient option. There are inline specific pads out there like the ones from Passau and Kennesky that are pretty cool and designed for that inline puck. Good luck!
