Great performance, great music, great singing and great video. I was especially moved by seeing the shot of the Strauss family gravesite.

One song that reduces me to tears each time.

Strauss was of the conducting school which thinks that "acting out" the music is for flamboyant show-offs. I believe it was he who advised conductors "Don't look at the horns - it only encourages them." Heaven knows what he thought of his friend, Mahler - or what he would've made of Bernstein!
Great upload; very sensitively and imaginatively edited.

That's for the trombones, actually, but yep. That was Strauss.

Thank you for posting. Ive always loved this beautiful song and seeing Strauss conducting his own work is prescious.

    Beautiful.
Funny how the guy in the lederhosen jumps off the stage at the beginning. :-)

He was the one with the "Dr. Strauss - Take III" clapboard for the audio/video.

Adore having this document. Whatever each listener's reaction to the music and text was, it w as not produced by any mugging and visual theater by the composer and conductor. All of that direction since Bernstein

I think Oscar Levant said of Bernstein that he uses music to accompany his conducting. (He also said "I think a lot of Bernstein-but not as much as he does")

Thank you very much for this beautiful recording. Very touching. Annette Brun was a very fine soprano. By the way: Lugano is a Swiss city at the lake of Lugano - close to Italy but still in Switzerland! Many thanks again.

a rare and beautiful audio recording. The video with Strauss conducting is taken from elsewhere though.

i do wish the singer would sing on key. There are a few of us that prefer singers to sing on key.

Beautiful recording, but wait a minute... this isn't a sound recording of Strauss Himself conducting the piece is it?? That's too good to be true from the sound quality of other recordings on RUclips!

Yes this IS a sound recording of Strauss conducting Allerseelen, but the video is from another source.

    Very good video.
But the city of Lugano it's in Swiss (Canton Ticino) not in Italy.
You are probably confused because the Canton Ticino is spoken in the Italian language but trust me it is not in Italy, indeed it is not even in the European Union.

Hal Leonard has a solo piano transcription of this piece. In their 2 book set of symphonic transcriptions.

Strauss was definitely no conducting dynamo. Did he get his conducting posts through nepotism?

      Errrr…. he was Richard Strauss!

One cannot judge him as a conductor from this film. When he was younger, he was a bit more demonstrative, but the work of a conductor is done largely in rehearsal. Over the course of his very long career in both orchestral and opera settings, he was regarded by his fellow musicians as a great conductor.

Vous devriez écouter André Rieu , c est plus a votre portée . R.Strauss est une légende que ce soit dans la composition comme dans la direction.
