Presque Isle Bay Day 1

This was my first day kayak fishing a legendary smallmouth fishery: Presque Isle Bay on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania. I came ill-equipped with no electronics, but managed to catch them using trolling tactics that I usually reserve for striped bass fishing. The wind kicked up and made for some challenging situations. I enjoyed meeting and fishing with a local kayak angler, Mike Eller who shared a few spots and patterns with me.

Kudos for doing that well during a brutal weekend. There were very few bass boats out on the bay.

I’m aware. I have to travel. Caught river smallmouth in Virginia on Monday. Caught shoal bass in Georgia yesterday. I live on the road, and still always miss our Pennsylvania river smallmouth.

I think the hooks on lucky crafts can be a bit sub par. Tend to sharpen or swap mine, not sure if you’ve noticed the same

I do well with them if they are fresh, but do like to swap them out after some river use in particular. I don’t blame the hooks for losing that one. I was getting pushed hard by wind and breaking waves when it hit. I really did not get to fight that fish - I had to manage the kayak in bad conditions.

If you get bored with smallies, which I know you won't, you could troll up some walleye to take home. We crushed them there last year.

I went to radiology school in Jamestown. Not too far off from Presque Isle.

I crossed the Clarion and Allegheny on the way home. Need more time up there!
