    Consign to oblivion sounds much more epic live than in the old studio recording. God this song is so old

    How cool would it be with orchestra?
    Retrospect 10th anniversary concert in 2013, with full orchestra and choir. 24 song ,3 hour show, Consign To Oblivion was the closer there too. And Simone was about 3 months pregnant there.
    No, the crowd does not get down near the end of Consign To Oblivion. the song usually starts with a wall of death mosh pit, and during that end part, a circle pit.

    the arabic vocals in the intro with the middle eastern music theme on code of life is sung by the singer of the tunisian metal band myrath, zaher zorgati. epicas code of life isnt the only song he has been featured on without credits, also on the intro of sabatons music video for seven pillars of wisdom. his most notable feature though i would say is on arjen lucassens ayreon project where he sang on the song deathcry of a race which also features, tommy karevik, russel allen, tobias sammet, simone simons and floor jansen.

    This is what Epica founder Mark Jansen said about Beyond The Matrix:
    “Despite the title, this isn’t about the movie! It’s basically about being able to see that you’re in a matrix, to see that you’re in a cage. It’s hard to be able to see beyond your immediate surroundings when you’re trapped so you have to project yourself outside the matrix to understand'.

    It was cool to see these, first reactions to studio album tracks instead of live videos and with lyrics analysis. I've been a fan for some years now but didn't pay much attention to lyrics and now I have at least for these 9 songs lol
    Musically this band is awesome and has many more catalog, this setlist is a small one as opening band but they usually play more long songs like Consign to Oblivion, like Kingdom of Heaven (part 1 or part 3) and Design your Universe.

    For Beyond The Matrix, to complete the below explanation of Jaap Blaauw :
    In search of spirituality, there is an equivalence between the feeling of "touching God" for people who believe in religions (hence the references to divinity in the song) and the subjective feeling of being conscious of being conscious (for atheists, agnostics or Buddhists).
    In today's personal development of the conscience, self-observations of the inner unconscious of our ego (emotionally: anger, sadness, joy, fears, awe, excitement, conditional love, disgust, ... whether positive or negative ; + mentally: the words we say in our heads without any control ; + our instinctive reactions ==> all that is automatic and uncontrollable at emotional, mental and instinctive levels) can be mastered with training on being conscious of being conscious (I summarize very briefly!).
    In the song, the ego, our automatic unconscious patterns, is symbolized by "the matrix".
    Getting out of our ego and touching our essential qualities (compassion, unconditional love, serenity, equanimity, courage, hope, humility, inner peace, ...) is done by this very hard and long inner work to become a conscious being (often referred as "divinity" in the original spiritual meaning, and not in the meaning of concrete traditions and beliefs) => so here, the "divine" is not criticized because it is taken in the original meaning of being in touch of our inner virtues / essential qualities. In the original meaning, feeling an inner sense of unconditional love (or peace, equanimity, ...) is equivalent of being in touch with God (later, it derived in believing in traditions and thinking having the absolute truth).
    In atheists contemporain views, spirituality is geared towards "Presence" and not "God things": it means exercising to live the most possible by switching our subjectivity towards "being conscious of being conscious".
    The words used in this song are so close to this that it is my explanation that Epica tries to explain : "get out of your ego and touch your essential qualities to feel an inner sense of peace".

      For Consign to Oblivion, you make the point at the beginning that it should be great with a live orchestra. In fact, there is ONE version of this existing! If you check (either in a reaction or just for yourself offline) the song Consign to Oblivion from the live concert "Retrospect" (10th anniversary DVD/Bluray, available on RUclips), you will hear how it sounds (and look) with a full orchestra and choir. It's worth at least one seeing of it :)

    • @deminybs
      @deminybs Год назад +2

      really?? do you actually like the sound more or just because it's a video??
      I've always preferred the studio version of practically every song ever lol. (unless I'm physically at the concert)
      but videos of live versions, the crowd making noise over instrumental parts annoys me lol

    • @LuvtheJEm
      @LuvtheJEm Год назад +1

      @@deminybs I really do like the sound better. Their live videos don't have bad sound quality and I enjoy the little changes they make to add some personality to the songs. Like when Coen plays a snippet of La Marseillaise during Consign to Oblivion.

    • @Deilwynna
      @Deilwynna Год назад +1

      @@deminybs if live or studio version is better depends on the band and which concert the live was recorded at, like iron maidens fear of the dark, i very much prefer the live version from either rock in rio -01 or live at ullevi -05, while for iron maidens the clansman, there is no better version than live at rock in rio -01. if we are purely talking about epica, their concert recording at zenith in paris and the live studio recordings for omegalive livestream are generally their best, specially zenith for consign to oblivion

    • @deminybs
      @deminybs Год назад +1

      @@Deilwynna I guess it's just suggestive , you & luvthejem both didn't address the "crowd drowning over instrumentation" part of my comment, so guessing you're both more about the visuals.
      which whatever more power to ya but when talking about music I'm talking about the music....lots of live stuff the vocalist is way off , ect that surely you can at least acknowledge, call it improvising or whatever but most people wanna hear the studio version live for the non digitized version that cuts out a lot of the soundscape
