  • On December 5th, New Bern's Cullman Performance Hall at Tryon Palace resonated with the soulful tunes of Joe Brown & The Band during the "Music at the Original Mansion" concert. In celebration of North Carolina's Year of the Trail, this concert marked the second Music at the Mansion celebrating the African American Music Trails of Eastern North Carolina, an exploration of the rich musical heritage in Eastern North Carolina. From the funky rhythms of Kinston to the bluesy notes of Tarboro and the soulful tunes of Wilson, the Trails capture the essence of jazz, blues, and gospel that reverberates everywhere in between.
Originally conceived by the North Carolina Arts Council to honor transformative figures in jazz, gospel, and popular music, the African American Music Trails of Eastern North Carolina now finds its home under the stewardship of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission. This initiative not only pays homage to the region's musical luminaries but also serves as a cultural beacon, illuminating the profound impact of African American music on the diverse tapestry of North Carolina's artistic landscape.
Notably, First Lady Kristin Cooper initiated Music at the Mansion, a video concert series celebrating the diversity of North Carolina's music, as part of the 2019 Year of Music project, Come Hear North Carolina. This series was made possible through the generous support of the North Carolina Arts Foundation.
