I think that’s why I’m going to go with the gator tail from khhi. I prefer the look of the down under but KHHI version is so much tougher. I just wish they sold one with a shorter blade
yeah I googled outback knives and first thing I saw was a cut away picture of the handle and the metal tine is only half the width if the handle and the threaded end is maybe 1/3rd the thick of that, They don't need full circular threads they could leave it the same thick and still put threads on it and even put a cross member with threads or some thing similar . This has been my Favorite knife since the crock dundee movie and just now found it by accident after years of poking around so I hope they can fix this weakness.
The knife I have is from there first production line. I've used it hardcore and figured the same about the pommel, so I've never gripped it during chopping. But you are right, it is no wall hanger.
Not true..take the Ontario SP10 Raider Bowie..sticktang and near indestructible. Take the Glock FM78 and FM81..little partial tang..near indestructible..
As it is now it is still more knife then most. I would pick this broken bowie over the bear grylls knife. It has sentimental value as I have used it so much have grown to love it even more. It is so nice having all that power and is a joy to use as it does in seconds what a mora does in minutes. It dwarfs a trailmaster and makes an RTAK 2 seem small.
I got the Outback since two years and I used it daily, but it is good to know that this could happen! But I think that this is a really unbiased video and it shows that also a good knife can have its flaw. It would be cool if Down Under Knifes would see this Video, so that they can upgrade the design and for that price they take for the knife they should compensate all broken knifes to the buyers! I hope they do it.....!!!
That is basically a presentation knife...rat tail tang knifes are not good for chopping anyway...they are better suited for general cutting and slicing or stabbing...get a bk-9 or an esse junglas for rough use without any problems in a survival situation..the cold steel trailmaster is an ok choice too..but it has a week link in it's semi full tang handle....and if your going to be doing major chopping chores...buy a high quality machete and spend a little time putting a decent edge on it....it will make the work much easier on you.
Bummer but honestly, there's a reason most modern makers have abandoned the stick tang design, it is a proven stress riser and the weak point on any knife of that design. Personally, I might use a knife with that design for a smaller camp or bushcraft knife but for a large blade where chopping and tougher jobs are done, the farthest I would go would be like a Fallkniven or Scrapyard which still have a large amount of the stock running through. It's seems inevitable that a stacked handle will fail under hard use .
Except that you don't really want to chop anything that close to your fingers, since the blade is made long and heavy specifically for easier chopping...
I never understood not having a full tang for a hard use knife. Anything less than a full tang for a knife of that size makes no sense to me because it would be a compromise not to use a full tang. I don't like compromises when it comes to a knife I want to be able to trust my life with. I'll take scales over stacked washers any day if it means I can have a more sturdy knife.
@@pinkriverdolphin-1 I try to explain that to some People here Who say its a rattail..but on you tube they are all experts in knives..do the most stupid things with knives and then complain about the knife.. And if i ask this guy from this video how hé broke this knife hé delete my question so i asked again.. I have the Outback in 440C and that knife is near indestructible..
Glad to see this video, you saved me the cost of it! Sorry it broke, but you did find it’s weak point, this is why I only buy knives where I can see the full tang.
Good to hear! :) My fave broke at the blade/tang transition... -the manufacturer machines it too 'square' and so is prone to causing stress-risors... Short of brazing a new tang on, or annealing it then forge-welding... there's not a lot I or anyone else can do! I may do this one day; but am tempted to forge it into a MONSTER folder. I'm sure you wanted to know all that! ;) Hang Tough Mate!
Hello, sir. Just subbed. I've seen your other videos on this cool knife and man, that is very unfortunate indeed! This is the one reason I never trust a screwed tang, no matter how much the manufacturer flaunts the design. Sometimes the flair a knife gives off does not match it functionality. You're right about your testing. I've yet to see anyone other than you simulate the abuse this knife would take in a survival situation. Sad to see it didn't stand up to the full extent. I feel for you.
A way to work with this style of knife, is to grip the handle with you thumb , index and middle fingers. Let you ring finger and pinky grip half as much, if it slips a little the swell on the end of the grip will prevent that, most of the force will be in the forward half of the handle when you use it hard. Cheers.
Although this is an old thread I like to put my two cents down. I can detect a serious design failure in this knife, which is the threaded rat-tail where they should have left the spine nice and thick pressure embedded in a matched pocket in the pommel and then pinned. Some people criticize hidden tang knives considering them weak for chopping etc. but forget the fact that most swords throughout human history were built that way and withstood much abuse without breaking.
The blade breaking would have been something to cry to momma about, but not the pommel. Grind upwards toward the blade, drill through the pommel and hot peen it back together; I do not grip the pommel for use anyway, but that is how I would fix it.
Buy a Cold Steel Monolith 52100 Drop Forged Bowie... It’s a single piece of unbelievable steel. I’ve beaten the coating off every surface, and it’s still an unscratched razor.
Man love the bowies, but ya gotta get a full tang. Had a cheap Chinese junk bowie that I abused cruelly for years because it was so cheap. You should never treat a knife the way I did this one. It never broke finally got stolen in the end.
I had the same problem, i emailed DUK and they sent me a new one for free... Dont be mistaken, these are great knives, but with the small taper you have to expect issues with the heat treat, the taper is too hard and it snapped off while chopping. shit happens, dont put this beast down until you have actually used one
I really appreciate this video I have been contemplating buying this knife but now I won't be I'm an Aussie but American made and American steal is better
If this was my knife I would probably make my own wooden handle or something to slip on and use an extremely strong glue then I guess it also has your style to it. You could even carve your name in the wood and colour it brown.
That knife went through he** most people wouldn't put that much torture on a knife in a lifetime of use but you my friend showed us just how tuff the outback knife is
I don't think you understand the POU of big knifes but I can tell you that for light wood processing and thinning down wood like I did with my Boomerang it rocks. it is a beastly knife and after getting used to it, my RTAK 2 feels under powered. NOT JUST a wall hanger. this knife has been through hard use that would probably destroy allot of other knives. No way in hell would the BG ultimate(FAIL)survival knife ever survive what is knife has done.
I'm Sorry your knife handle broke mate....It's really shit when stuff like that happens. Maybe you could use the knife as template for a design of your own? I'm sure you're awhere that a full tang Bowie is unlikely to have that problem so why not design it after your favorite one :) Best wishes for your next blade mate! Chin up!
You mean how is swells and the new ones do not? Well I have seen a few new ones that have a straight handle however when I got this and looked on there official website there handle swelled like mine. The new straight ones are either fakes or they have changed the design.
It is actually a full tang knife it’s just the butt cap at the end that’s screwed on , you could always fit a new handle yourself there is no reason to bin this beauty.
Lazy Daze it is a full tang the only part that is rat tail is the pommel at the end which is now broken off so what is left is a full tang knife which is quite easy to fit a new handle and use pins and you have a custom knife .
Try a Svord von Temsky Forest Bowie it won't break like that. It's a beautiful knife but whoever made it must have hardened the tang as hard as the blade. That's a mistake and they should have just left it soft.
Atlanta Cutlery Corps. sells full tang, high carbon steel bowies at a good price. One day I will be getting one. I have some of their other blades and know their quality. Can absolutely assure you it will NEVER break. Gotta keep it oiled, but the 1080 carbon is a huge upgrade over that 440C stainless. And no I don't work for them lol. :)
To bad your blade broke. If your looking for a classic looking bowie that is full tang a good alternative is the Western W49. Many of the vintage ones are made with good quality carbon steel. They don't have that week point in the handle.
It's a shame. But that's what you get with those kind of handles. It doesn't have to be a full tang, of course it would be better but it also would be a lot heavier. I think it can be easily repaired. Take care.
I really don't understand the reasoning in the screw-on pommel. Doesn't it only add to the cost to reshape the end of the tang to a screw? Why not just continue the tang all the way and then drill a hole through the pommel and tang, then use a pin to peen it to place...
No this is more versatile then a hatchet or tomahawk and even out chops at least one of my hatchets. I like it more then a hatchet for thinning stuff down for carving. most of the time I do not need to chop wood thicker then my wrist and for that a big knife, depending on the knife' can be enough. I spend allot of time out but and I know what it can do. maybe 9 times out of 10 a big knife is good enough for what I need but if I know I will be doing too much chopping for it I will take an axe.
that kind of tang is not suitable for heavy use or survival.get yourself a kabar bk9 and it will hold up through any thing.. that knife is beautiful though and i may get one for my collection..
What a shame that happened :( Hopefully, they'll replace it for you. It does seem an odd place for it to break though, tbh. The only thing I can think of that would do that is vibration travelling up the tang. Which their design should have taken account of. A real pity it broke though. On the plus side, gives you an excuse to get and try out some other huge knife. I don't know if you can get them there, but Condor do something called the Warlock. Looks about the right size for you, lol.
Only if down under would move the handle up cause there is a ton of space in between the top of the to the cutting edge this knife would be full tang and stronger. Sorry bout the knife.
That's why I always go full tang. Knives with so called full tang blades yet actually the tangs are nothing more than a long bolt. I learned my lesson when I got my first knife which was a USMC Ka-Bar. Then I found out how many have snapped right at the handle where they cut a right angle into the blade. Dumbest idea ever.
Not good, I know how much you loved that thing. Hopefully they will honour their warranty. Personally I think there are a lot of better options for bush use. Maybe time to look at something else for a user blade?
I have a large-ish bowie from Eickhorn, Germany. Did a review on it, if you like to take a look. Have used it to dig holes and even by accident dropped it on rock - landed right on the tip without breaking. Might be something for you.

The Timber Rattler Big Green Bowie Knife is a realy good knife, that looks similar to this one. I am about to buy one of these. And I want either this one, or the TOPS steel eagle, becouse of the full tang. Would you be so kind and cca. tell me how exactly have you been treating this bad boy? Pleaaaaase :)
Nothing some quality marine epoxy fix, check out the Ontario knife company, their Marine raider Bowie is the same size, nut blackened and not so pretty. I use it at work all the time and its bullet proof and for 70 US$ you can't beat it, I think they just lowered the price to just a shade over $50
they have a 5 year warranty, so you should be sweet! I am sure the world would like to know if they don't stand by their product! I am sure they will though, Its not my cup of tea for sure, but you would have to be their best salesman.
This knife is WAY too Hollywood. Comes in second only to the Rambo (Jimmy Lile) knife. Junk. Want a 'real' one about this size? 1. Bark River Bravo III. 2. Cold Steel Trailmaster. 3. Fallkniven NL1 Thor. Spend some money, as this video illustrates, it's worth it in the long run.
Remember folks, a knife ain't an axe, even big Bowie's aren't. Take a Gransfors Bruks small forrest axe, that takes care
I broke mine. A blade that size needs a full tang for god sake!
@Compound Pictures someone broke the 1095 version as well, same place.
I think that’s why I’m going to go with the gator tail from khhi. I prefer the look of the down under but KHHI version is so much tougher. I just wish they sold one with a shorter blade

that knife can be welded up and made strong, bro...i had it done on a couple of my knives...take it to man that knows steel...he will do you right.
The knife I have is from there first production line. I've used it hardcore and figured the same about the pommel, so I've never gripped it during chopping. But you are right, it is no wall hanger.

Jeez at least it still will work fine. My knife broke in half and chipped its blade in bits. Not an outback bowie knife though
were you pounding with the pummel when it broke? someone should be able to weld that for you.
looks like every year you will have to spend another $200 for another one to use
Only if down under would move the handle up cause there is a ton of space in between the top of the to the cutting edge this knife would be full tang and stronger. Sorry bout the knife.
What did you do with it after it broke? I might be interested in buying all the pieces for a reasonable price...
What were you doing with it when it failed?
That's why I always go full tang. Knives with so called full tang blades yet actually the tangs are nothing more than a long bolt. I learned my lesson when I got my first knife which was a USMC Ka-Bar. Then I found out how many have snapped right at the handle where they cut a right angle into the blade. Dumbest idea ever.

I got one of these for $100 Au . Did I get a great deal or No ?
Well, they also said that the handle is only 80 kg supported :s
That can be fixed better than before.
second video I see that they break at the same spot...
Bugger bro what were you doing with it when it broke just using the blade or using the wend
I have a large-ish bowie from Eickhorn, Germany. Did a review on it, if you like to take a look. Have used it to dig holes and even by accident dropped it on rock - landed right on the tip without breaking. Might be something for you.
I'm sorry to hear that that knife broke on you. I have a timber rattler western outlaw bowie & it's full tang. It costs $30+ & it has not broken like that knife & that knife seems to always break at the tang. That knife is a whole lot of $$$$. It's better to get the Rattler.
Truth.
I love that knofe and im still ganna get one, but i have seen the SoG creed, that looks like a nice knife also
I'd Like buy this .. knife, but after seen this video I Think ... this is just to put in house to show your friends
See should have bought the down under kookaburra throwing knives. You get two they're full tang and if one brakes you still have the other one
it is ok. I have been contacted by two custom knife makers who have offered to fix it for free.
What is a good "working" knife in your opinion? Also, why is this particular knife not a good "working" knife?
Thread on tang way to small a diameter for this size knife no wonder it broke.
Did they set you up with another after it broke?
I feel like crying too, let it out brother
I wish. the tang has taken allot and in the end the bit on the end gave. If it was my design it would have been full tang.
Sorry to know that the knife has busted however I couldn't help noticing that the handle is very dark unless it's the eclipse model I can only assume that the handle has not been maintained properly through time of use by placing handle in veg oil. Love your videos though I'm a bit of a knife nut my self as I also have to work with them every day in the chef industry.
no. The first one was but a Bowie can be designed for other things and still be a bowie.
nice knife . are these Australian made knives ?
Chinese made
Rawhead Rex for real? I thought AUS made???

no full visible tang no way i want a knife= rat tail tang knives are weak
guncotton 1 Damn. You’re missing out on some well made and tough knives then.
Uf they ever redesign that knife with a full tang,,, Id buy one. a nice looking knife should not break.
A good knife like that don't need to be broke by some idiot that can't take care of a great knifr
The Timber Rattler Big Green Bowie Knife is a realy good knife, that looks similar to this one. Tell Down Under to make the back part that broke actually part of the tang, but in a new model
Not really a ful tang on there.
How did you break it? I have had lots of knives fail on me but never there.
Because it's a rat tail tang blade. Not full tang. A blade that big should always be full tang.
Beautiful and over priced for a China blade. Sucks...
I am about to buy one of these. And I want either this one, or the TOPS steel eagle, becouse of the full tang. Would you be so kind and cca. tell me how exactly have you been treating this bad boy? Pleaaaaase :)

Spend some money, as this video illustrates, it's worth it in the long run.
chopping a spear shaft so I could fit it in my car.
