      Can't really blame them. Aside from Airplane being very pop culture reference heavy which makes anyone younger than 50 have a harder time getting some of the jokes, the newer generations don't even really have any idea what slapstick is. Seltzer and Friedberg literally destroyed the genre so bad no one has tried to make one in a decade.

    This movie is so great. Unfortunately, many of the jokes get lost on the younger generation because they don't know the reference. Little things, like the older lady speaking Jive being the actress that played June Cleaver on the show Leave it to Beaver. Makes it that much funnier. And the beach scene being a spoof from the movie From Here to Eternity.

    It was pretty funny seeing their confused, shocked, or disgusted looks at many of the jokes in this movie. That's the point of this movie. Satire. The theater was rolling on the floor laughing.
    For me at 15, the scenes where the IV got popped out of the little girl's arm and Mrs Cleaver speaking jive had me rolling on the ground laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe.
    I was also born in Fresno so when the funny guy in the control tower said that joke "Last spring we did Europe in 9 days. And then we went to Bakersfield and then we ended up in Fresno. Fresno?, no one goes to Fresno anymore" we were all dying! Hysterical!
    Many of these joke references are unknown today so many of the jokes fall flat. This movie is the definition of satire. Every scene had something It made fun of. You have to see it several times to see all of them.

    It's a great movie, but lots of the jokes were relevant for the time. "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home" was a popular tv commercial then. So you're going to miss a whole bunch of jokes that are no longer relevant. And yes, planes used to have actual cigarette smoking sections. So the smoking or nonsmoking joke was thought to be meant the smoking section, but it's the ticket that was smoking.

    • @jawbone78
      @jawbone78 2 года назад +5

      There's a reason planes still have those no smoking signs (even though they won't be needed much longer, as the last smoke-anywhere generation has mostly given it up, and most of the old super smokers are dead now). Up until the 90s you could basically smoke anywhere. Restaurants had "non-smoking" sections literally right next to smoking sections, with no ventilation or barrier. Hospitals and airplanes were some of the first places smoking was seriously restricted, but even that came relatively recently.

    • @BigSleepyOx
      @BigSleepyOx 2 года назад +2

      Actually, it used to be that the entire plane allowed smoking. Then later, as with restaurants, they added non-smoking sections, which were small sections, in the most undesireable seats. Then the non-smoking sections grew bigger and bigger, then took over the whole thing (planes, restaurants, etc).

    I’ve loved “Airplane” since it came out, but clearly Jay and Amber weren’t on the same wavelength with the irreverent and unabashed nature of hard satire. I suspect most of us landed on this channel because we fell in love with their wide-eyed sense of wonder as they discover new facets of music across a variety of genres. And I think it’s great that they are branching out. But the long form of cinema leaves a lot more room for the breadth of the human experience - heart-warming and terrifying, familiar and grotesque - with a lot more nuance and complexity than can be captured in a three-minute song. I’m mindful that this is a new thing for them, and maybe it’s only fair to give them a little room to grow into this new adventure by starting a little closer to their comfort zone, before stretching for some of the rougher edges. There are some brilliant films, like “Blazing Saddles” and “Schindler’s List” that can be very hard on the sensibilities, but that EVERYONE should see at least once (Jay and Amber included, so please add ‘em to the list). Still, there are tons of great suggestions here - Princess Bride, My Cousin Vinny, A League of Their Own, Field of Dreams and many more - that afford an opportunity for our beloved RSR Squad Leaders to become more comfortable with the film reaction genre and its unique opportunities and challenges, before swinging for the fences. My two cents…Pax.

But given that this is possibly the most reacted to movie on RUclips, you'll see lots of younger viewers having no problem catching most of the jokes. There are so many jokes in this movie it doesn't even matter if half of them are culturally outdated, that's a weak excuse, their are plenty that aren't. There are plenty of younger reactors who get this movie and plenty that don't. I think it has more to do with ones understanding of humor. There are different types of humor. This type is called "absurdist humor" and it went right over their heads. They don't even seem to realize they're watching a comedy, which astounds me. They're studying it like its an SAT and focusing on all the wrong things. The constant back and forth banter doesn't help, because they're talking over the jokes. Oh my gosh! You guys are so cute in noticing the old school plane travel! Yes, there were smoking and non-smoking sections on airplanes. Crossing the tarmac to board a plane via a set of steps was pretty normal ( and added an extra sense of excitement as a child!). The airlines used to serve REAL food on china plates with linen napkins and real glass and utensils. I was on a 14 hour overseas flight back in the 70's on PanAm from West Africa. The plane had small hooks that the flight attendant would hang a hammock from for babies to sleep in. One time I even sat next to a man that had his pet orangutan (wearing a diaper and clothing) in a seat next to him. The orangutan spent the entire flight lifting up the skirts of every woman that went by!

      I had to cross the tarmac to walk up the steps this past November (2021). At LaGuardia. The first gate in the old, main terminal was in the basement and you always had to do the tarmac/step thing if you flight left from there (small, commuter planes). Good riddance.
