Just look at his spaces around the notes! He wastes no body motion... and taps completely into the energy of the rebound. Pure zen! Gratitude!
It's worth pointing out that this is super helpful for us non-drummers too. I've been working through a few of your vids on polyrhythms over the last few months and they've really improved my playing. It's all about learning the songs; I wish I'd learned that 10 years ago! Thanks mate :)
I wish most drummers would play in this manner..A lot of times I don’t hear the melody in their playing, not only in their solo but also while playing together some just make unrelated drum parts that just get in the way in my ears..
Oooh right when he started to improvise an old soloing lesson video of elvin came to my mind.. Beautifull
Super helpful and exactly what I'm looking for... soloing has always been a bit of a mystery for me but if you've put in the time and absorbed the melody into your subconsciousness this kind of melodic playing comes way more easily than thinking in terms of 4 and 8 bar phrases of random stuff. The melody gives you a framework from which your ideas come.
Ari, like very few musicians, can move into the center of the music. Such a deep connection.
OMG the moment you started to outline the melody of Think of One with your drums, you just remembered Frankie Dunlop to me soo much, then Blakey, Haynes... thanks, amazing video!
One of the best, most informative, inspiring and enjoyable drum videos I've ever watched. You got me for patreon membership.
Yeah Ari! Great Monk tune and interpretation! Beautiful!
Andrew! Thank you or being such a great inspiration to me and for hipping me to so much music!
@@AriHoenig Hey Brother Ari! Thank YOU for the inspiration! Best wishes and Happy New Year to you and yours! Stay safe and keep swinging my friend.
@@andrewgriffith4807 Well sir, seems like I gotta check you out, if you inspire Ari :)
Can not express how much this spoke to me. Cheers mate
oh god the way he plays blue monk! the way that he increase the semitone is incredible
Absolutely ground breaking in concept execution and ability to teach the concept. i have never seen anything like this and I have been playing for a long time. He really has this approach and system worked out. I hope someday I can study with this very good musician.
I see the influence of your mentor Ralph Peterson!
still love your attitude and first of all your musical drumming!!
Absolutely💯 amazing!!! Thank you master!!
What a marvelous little masterclass on melodic drumming. I’m not a musician, but this helped me understand lots as to how and why you succeed in preserving so much of the feel of the original song in the otherwise quite radical reworked standards on the “Conner’s Days” album. Thanks, man.
Dude...you have a channel??? Why was I not informed? Dang, whatever....I am now subscribed.
Yes Ari!
Thank you man!
Great lesson. Learn the melody. This applies to every instrument. It's something I don't do enough as a bass player.
Super interesting and impressive video Ari. Thanks!
Would love to find a video of you talking about keeping time during tunes and your approach to that.
Amazing. Very consistent. I find it terribly difficult to keep the melody in my head over the choruses. Without the harmony things tend to fall apart.
Buy this guy’s Patreon so he doesn’t have an ad every 30 seconds on his videos anymore
Awesome, thx Ari.
Really inspiring!!! Thanks you so much
Hi Ari, I saw you at PASIC 2012 I believe... it was a pleasure! Thanks for this great explanation of your approach- you continue to be one of the most musical drummers I've ever heard. Very inspiring!
Thank you so much, Ari!
Grandissimo Ari !! Una stupenda ed importantissima lezione che ci fa capire come la batteria sia uno strumento melodico . Penso che la prima cosa da affinare sia l' accordatura dei tamburi in funzione delle songs .... E riuscire a prendere le Blue note ! Wuauh !!! Immenso Ari Hoenig !! Thank you so much Maestro 👏👏👏 ♥️
This is super. Ive been looking for videos on melodic drumming and finally found one.
Great!
Thanks so much, Mr.Honig! The most important lesson on improvisation. Your book SYSTEMS gives material that forms the basis of my daily practice sessions! This means so much for me and my musical development!
Thank you for this important lesson...
Would there be any chance that you could demonstrate your approach to passion dance? As this song has two distinct rhythmic and melodic changes. I'd love to hear your interpretation. Here's hoping...
man i luv your playing
Lo mejor es ver que lo disfrutas maestro
Wow
Great wisdom
Great video, thanks Ari. It shows how alot of your vocabulary is based on the workings of the melody. Fantastic!
Very good lesson
buenísimo Ari H!!! Muchas gracias.
Amazing
Thank you ari ,Master !! 🥁🥁🤟🏻🤟🏻
This is sooo good
How to make a floor tom sound that good, my 16 inch sound better as a bass drum. The other day in fact, i layed it down to sleep, and started hitting it. With the bass pedal. I do try multiple heads , i think it his tuning, nice.
Amazing!!! Very Inspiring 🌳🌻🌼🌾🌿☘🍀🍃
Nice work
Ari it was amazing the way you approach the melody from the drums. Which notes do you usually use to tune your drums?, It also helps to sound musically, when improvising thinking about the melody.
What a great video!
Ari this is great. Can you tell me what heads are you playing on your 18" bass drum? Thank YOU!
It’s a 16 inch floor Tom actually lol. Isn’t it crazy how it sounds like a 18 in lol
👍👍👍
Is there a way to do the same for Bebop themes as confirmaton where the rythm of the melody is ''the same'' all along the form ? (Confirmation, Blues for Alice...)
Yeah dude
Fabulous , very informative 👌 👍
Hello Ari , and compliments for your homemade "corona cut "! : ) . ( you cant remember me, but I invited you to play twice in Italy years ago when your agent here were Simon "ClearLight ") I'm just doing t this - since I'm "prisonier " at home for corona - playing " i've got under my skin" , that's my favourite song ( but to be true I always did with songs as Jack DJ told me do that a long ttime ago , I was teen ageer ... ) Seriously : nobody has the drums so well umbelievable tuned as you . Whats about maybe a tutorial showing the way you tune it ? I know you post that already , but more specific would be highly appreciated !!! All the best , thanks , hope to meet you soon .
marc t hey. Yes I have one on Patreon already with that subject and also have the video Melodic Drumming where that topic is covered extensively.
Hey Marc, I have a whole video on that called Melodic Drumming on Jazz Music Heaven.
I'd hate to be the dude that thumbs downed this.
"Think of one" Thelonius Monk
what are you playing on the floor tom at 10:15?
Right Left Right Left Foot Foot x2 :)
I answer questions from Patreon members. Please check it out.
In the first song he somehow became possessed by Leland Palmer The Grey.
So I should tune my kit to each song I’m playing?
3:40
No :) You think he's hitting the pitches, but he isn't. It's an illusion : we know the song, we think we're hearing the pitches. Proof is, he didn't changed tuning when playing the second tune :)
you are handsome
Will those pills on the music stand make me a better musician? haha
Paul Friedman Ha! Those are earplugs but if you want to swallow them I can’t stop you.
Ari Hoenig
I thought they were pills as well, pah ha! I don’t think there are any pills on the market that can help a person learn songs. That would be cheating. Though I’ve heard ginkgo biloba might help.
And they said drums were not a melodic instrument. Psh!. (Unreal).
He's no Ringo Star, but I guess he's okay.
