  • This episode explains the job of cortisol, our unhappy chemical. You have power over your cortisol when you know how it works.
    FULL VIDEO SERIES WITH A FREE ACTION GUIDE: innermammalins...
    These 7 short videos show you how to build new neural pathways to turn on your happy brain chemicals in new and healthy ways. Anyone can do it by following these simple steps.
    You'll learn:
    - What turns on each happy chemicals in the state of nature, and why they're not on all the time.
    - Why do our unhappy chemicals turn on so easily.
    - Three simple steps to wire in new self-soothing skills, so you can replace an old habit that you're better off without
    It’s hard to accept the fact that our happy chemicals can’t surge all the time. DOPAMINE only spurts when you approach a new reward. OXYTOCIN only spurts when you enjoy safety in numbers. SEROTONIN only spurts when you assert your social importance. You will not have peace if you rush to trigger more of these chemicals as soon as a spurt is over. You’ll have more peace in the long run if you get comfortable with the neutral feeling between these spurts.

    So perhaps when children come home from school and play rather than study it's because they are trying to distract and counter balance their cortisol levels which have been elevated from a stressful school environment. That would mean it's not laziness, but rather a safety mechanism to maintain mental stability.

    Mam I am from India, I've read your book 'habits of a happy brain' it's so interesting and things are explained so clearly that without the knowledge of neurobiology anyone can understand. Big thumbs up 👌 and thanks for your effort.

    By the second time she blew on that whistle my cortisol levels went sky high,
    and my threat detector was laser-focused on her hands,
    hoping there would be time to get my headphones off before the next blow.
    Loved the video though. XD

    Thank you so much! I experience a lot of anxiety or stress, and have been smoking on and off for years now... I have finally thought to myself there must be a reason for why I can't seem to stop this, and others can.... I think I finally understand this better, and it feels helpful to see it in the light you are shining on this subject. Trying to mask high cortisol levels by elevating the happy chemicals, even though - you said it right - they are harming me in the long run..... Be it smoking, be it sugary foods, be it anything else that makes me feel "good".... Needing a drink when going to a party or social event etc. Really refreshing to look at it from a biochemical standpoint. Thanks!

    Love your videos, they are the best. But does the amygdala scan for threats instead of the cortex?

    • @InnerMammalInstitute
      @InnerMammalInstitute  6 лет назад +1

      Cortex filters the flood of inputs to zero in on what's urgent. The amygdala helps you build the template of "what's urgent" from past experience to filter and respond to new experience. So they work together.

  • @hailulma5319
    @hailulma5319 Год назад +1

    Hey, is it true that cortisol creates a sense of urgency that makes someone pull their hand out of a fire? I thought is it a mere reflex.

    • @InnerMammalInstitute
      @InnerMammalInstitute  Год назад

      The reflex is to withdraw from pain, and the chemical is what tells you you're in pain. Imagine a baby. It doesn't "know" what fire is but it knows that when something hurts, you try to make it stop. That's cortisol.

    This is fantastic I am glad I was able to come across this, like many comments before me, it helps to explain what has been happening.
    I do have a question though. When you state "Our mammal brain is triggered when we see a threat to our social support" do you have a real life example?
    Youbhave half a chocolate bar at school to give your friend but someone else has a full chocalate bar to give your friend so you feel the threat of not being able to have that friend much longer because he goes to the full chocolate bar guy?
    Is it a threat too your social standing as is?
    Any clarification with an example would be unreal, from anyone if they can think of it.
    Cheers!

      Here's a wide range of examples: You see an attractive person flirting with your partner; Your health club loses its lease so you won't see your pals every day; your kids grow up and leave home; your boss focuses a lot of attention on a new coworker.

    • @InnerMammalInstitute
      @InnerMammalInstitute  6 лет назад +3

      Good question, addressed in my new book, ANXIETY: What turns it on. (only $5.) What turns it off. Also, drink water. I do not believe in hacks. If you try to rush it, you will get addicted to something harmful in the long run just to mask your anxiety in the short-un. You are better off turning it off at the source.
